Secretary and 50 Shades of Grey

I've noticed a strange double-standard people have about the portrayal of abusive relationships and unsafe BDSM between Secretary and 50 Shades of Grey. So I wrote about it!

That's... a pretty good point, actually. My complaint about the Fifty Shades books, though, is at least partly about the fact that its end-point is seeing Christian "cured" of his kinky desires. Both stories have serious issues with portraying kink as related to mental illness (which just ain't accurate: http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/human_nature/2013/07/bondage_s_m_dominance_and_submission_are_they_dangerous_let_s_look_at_the.single.html ), but Fifty Shades retains the idea that these activities are seamy / undesirable. They're something Ana _endures_, in order to get to the point of having a vanilla rich hubby. I also have serious problems with statements people involved in making the films have made in public. Jamie Dornan has been the most obnoxious ( http://www.themarysue.com/50-shades-sex-dungeon/ ), but Dakota Johnson, and director Sam Taylor-Johnson, have both said stuff distancing themselves from kink as well. Which I can somewhat more understand from them -- given the symbiotic relationship of the film business and the tabloids, they probably don't want to get "a reputation" -- but it's still a matter of "kicking down" at a stigmatized community. And Dornan doesn't even have that excuse -- plenty of male stars have had reputations for that kind of thing, and it never hurt them any. :-P
