It's Wednesday and I've only got one page penciled? Harroo, gunna be working through the weekend for sure. It's been really interesting dealing with the How to Eat Pussy Comic "going viral"-- is that what the kids call it? A number of the places that posted it in its entirety or just posted an uncredited crop of it have apologized, agreed to pay me, and even solicited hiring me to make custom comics for them when my husband and I have contacted them with invoices and DMCA take down notices.
I've also decided to get more aggressive with Tumblr posts. For the longest time I just didn't know what to do about the OJST stuff getting passed around on Tumblr. Like, with my older work, eh, I don't care so much. But the OJST site is 100% my income at this point. Even if someone links back to me, those posts get tens of thousands of likes and reblogs and rarely send me any traffic, because Tumblr is so self-contained and people don't venture off of it. And also, if I don't take action to protect my stuff, I lose the copyright to it. If you don't have proof that you're at least making efforts to protect your work, then if someone does use that work to make a profit, you're not entitled to fight it because you didn't do so before. So you know what? Fuck it. Any time I find OJST stuff on there, I'm using the DMCA take down form they conveniently provide and taking that shit down. The first time I used it yesterday, they took down the uncredited crop of my pussy comic within the hour.
We'll see how long it takes before I eventually give up because this is essentially trying to fight the sky when it rains on you.

Oh right! I always get those things mixed up. All I know is that if I don't actively protect my work, I lose the right to fight it if someone uses it for profit later.

2014-04-04 18:11:06 +0000 UTCJust a small US legal FYI - Copyright does not have a "use it or lose it" clause. Trademarks, however do. While I understand your argument and desire to DMCA stuff, legally, as soon as it is produced you have the copyright to it and it cannot be taken away unless it is sold, made as a work for hire or the term expires.
