humphs! huhs! voiceover sessions!

Here's a behind the scenes clip from our voiceover/expression recording session at Premium Sound Studio in Montreal.
As some of you may know, the Space Cadet film does not have any dialogue (the original graphic novel didn't have any speech bubbles drawn into the panels), however there were quite a few moments (over 160!) where Celeste's expressions needed to have some sounds to match the animation. Sometimes they were as simple as a quick inhale or exhale, other times they were moments of surprise or the perfectly timed yawn!
We enlisted Montreal voiceover artist Geneviève Cocke, to record some expressions for the film. The studio set me up at the desk in the corner vocal booth so that I could help direct what type of energy or mood was required for each scene.
But once the record button was pressed and the tape/computer was "rolling", I would have to hold my breath and desperately try not to ruin the take by laughing or unintentionally shifting my weight causing the chair to squeak or something. LOL.
Geneviève is an incredible and very intuitive voiceover artist and would usually get the cue done in 1 or 2 takes. There were many "Nailed it!" moments where she would get it on the first take!
Sometimes we would do a couple other takes to try a slightly different tone/emotion as an alternate version that the sound editor can choose from at a later mix stage in the production. Sometimes the alternate version may work better with the ambient sounds and music during that scene, but those are decisions we will make at a later, edit/mix part of the production.

The yellow bar that you see sometimes scan across the screen is there to show the start point of the expression. My favorite moment is the "humph of determination" at the end! LOL!
Enjoy! and thank you for your support!
