After Being Reincarnated as Yamcha - Chapter 1

Update News

I'm still a bit behind my self-imposed daily goal, but let's improve together bit by bit. Here is the last chapter from the last poll, and I just forgot that I didn't give the last poll a closing time. Anyway, please enjoy the weekly poll story! I'm also increasing the chapters to 3 per week, so you guys are still due another chapter, and the minimum word count will be raised to 2000 words.

Call me Yamcha!

The young man wakes up on the hospital bed feeling refreshed instead of tired. After all, he still remembers the consequences of the previous night. Deciding to sit up from the bed and use the bathroom, the young man remembers the events of that fated day.

His name is Yanchit Davis, meaning God is Glorious and Son of David, an average freshman student who managed to enter college after months of grueling study. His parents had once immigrated from England to China for a factory job and Yanchit was born during the early days. At some point, Mr. and Mrs. Davis suffered a tragic traffic accident, and Yanchit stayed with his godfather in China, as he had no living relatives back in England.

Due to his unusual name, he was often teased by his classmates while growing up, called “Yan Xiao” by them, or “Dreary Yan.” Despite the difficulties, thanks to his godfather he managed to enter a good college and is studying for an engineering degree. Unfortunately, his life was almost cut short when the bus he was riding suffered an accident. That accident left him in a coma, and only the efforts of his struggling godfather allowed the young man to stay alive.

While in a coma, his soul traveled to another world, a world that Yanchit was familiar with: the world of Dragon Ball! He reincarnated as Yamcha, right after the gang managed to cut off Goku’s tail and they are ready to set on a new adventure! At that moment, Yamcha made the most important decision of his life: he defied canon and went to train with Goku under master Muten Roshi.

From that day, Yamcha and Goku went on several adventurers, becoming stronger together and defeating various enemies to defend Earth, until the fated day when Yamcha fought against Perfect Cell, after facing his greatest opponent to date, Yamcha was allowed to return to his universe unmolested.

Afterward, the young man woke up in the middle of the night and did everything in his reach to hold the feeling of Ki he acquired during his adventurers. Thanks to his prodigy level of Spirit Control, and many other advantages, the returned Yamcha managed to gather a small mote of Ki into his hands as proof of his adventurers and potential.

After finishing relieving himself, Yanchit calls the nurse to tell them he’s awake, and after a quick exam by a doctor, he’s declared healthy as a horse and discharged from the hospital.

While walking towards his apartment, the returned Yamcha takes a shortcut through a part and witnesses an interesting event. An elderly man wearing traditional clothes is clutching his chest in pain, while the distraught woman near him tries to call an ambulance.

Jogging at the pair to help, Yanchit can’t help but draw parallels between this event and typical “urban fantasy” web novels he read on the internet.

“Hey, do you guys need help? Do you want me to bring you to the hospital?”

“No, there, there is no need, young man.” The elder gentleman coughs, “It’s a usual pain, it, it will pass soon.”

“Grandpa, no! This looks nothing like your usual attacks! You never coughed so much blood before!”

Looking at the blood spat on the ground I agree that this much isn’t normal. I’m surprised he’s alive if he’s coughing blood like this. Deciding that this is an emergency, Yanchit touches the man’s back and sends a Ping of Ki to determine how bad is the older gentleman’s condition. The results weren’t good, with the elder state being serious and urgent. First, he needed to heal the damage to a minimum acceptable degree, but thankfully Yamcha learned the art of Healing from Dende.

Focusing on the injuries and using Spirit Control, the returned Yamcha uses his meager Ki to heal the old man, a faint glow emanating from his hand. He ignores the surprised gasps of the granddaughter and brings the elder condition to manageable levels. “This is going to hurt a lot, but it will help you long term. Are you ready?”

The stunned elder nods, and Yanchit uses his Ki to attack the cancerous cells, destroying them with unnerving precision and turning them into dark impurities. The elder face grimaces but he remains silent until he resumes coughing violently. Eventually, the elder spits a black mucous with a foul stink. Yanchit isn’t done yet, using his Ki to completely scrub the few remaining tainted cells from his patient and break them further, releasing them as turbid breath from the elderly man. Finally, the young Davis uses his healing technique to bring the man back to full health.

When Davis stands up he’s breathing hard from exhaustion. While the numbers from Power Levels aren’t the perfect indicator of true strength, they’re a good indicator of Genki, the life force component of Ki. Healing doesn’t necessarily use Genki, but Yanchit was in a hurry and had to supplement the healing with his life force.

Yanchit calculates his current power level to be between seven to eight, around the same as his first night as Yamcha. Most of that abnormally high power level comes from awakening his Ki, which usually brings an immediate increase in power.

“What is your name, benefactor?” The elder asks Davis, already looking at least twenty years younger. “Oh, what are my manners! My name is Sheng Jie, and this is my granddaughter Sheng Beiye. Please accept my most sincere thanks, benefactor.”

“You’re welcome,” the returned transmigrator graciously accepts the gratitude of the pair, “my name is Yanchit Davis, but you can call me Yamcha.”

Sheng Jie contemplates the nickname in silence while his granddaughter is more forward. “Yamcha, like in Dragon Ball?”

The young man blinks in surprise as he almost expected being called “Dreary Yan” by her. “Yeah. I mean, Yamcha is one of my favorite characters after Goku.” The young man believes that when you live the life of a side character, you can’t help but get attached to them and cheer them on.

Elder Jie remains silent since he initially thought his benefactor got that nickname from a love of dim sum. The elder clears his throat to catch the youngers attention. “Benefactor, may I have your contact information? I know that an expert like yourself doesn’t bother with the affairs of the secular world, but I wish to repay your help more earnestly later. For now, please accept this small token of appreciation.” The elder gentleman takes out a black credit card and hands it to the young man.

Yanchit awkwardly takes the credit card. “Elder Jie, I’m honored by your gratitude, but this isn’t something I can accept,” the young man quickly elaborates on what he means. “I mean that literally. It’s really difficult to use it when you’re not the owner or part of the family, and if anyone reports it as stolen it will cause trouble to you later.”

The old man’s eyes bulge out comically, giving the returned young man a sense of nostalgia for Master Roshi. Elder Jie’s granddaughter doesn’t miss the opportunity to giggle at her grandfather trying to act cool and failing. “You’re trying too hard, Grandpa! You can reward your savior properly later, if you want something more immediate, how about I take you out for dinner in a fancy restaurant as thanks? Grandpa can prepare a proper gift for you then.”

“Really? It’s a date them.” Yanchit replies with a practiced smile, making the girl blush.

“Ho ho ho, now who is trying to ‘act cool’ and failing, my dear?”

Davis shakes his head at the pair with a smile and is happy at the two putting behind them the traumatic experience. “Here, here’s my number. I need to go home and talk with my godfather, we can stay in touch until dinner. If there’s nothing else, I already worried my godfather long enough.”

“Of course, of course. Please, don’t let me hold you up. Until next time, benefactor.”

“See you next time, Yamcha!”

Waving at the pair, Yanchit Davis resumes walking toward his apartment. When he’s out of Sheng Jie’s vision, he turns to his granddaughter. “If you find an opportunity to become friends with young Yamcha, don’t waste it! His potential is immeasurable, and will help you in the future.”

“Alright, Grandpa.”

“Just make sure to name one of your children after me.” Elder Jie demands shamelessly, “It’s the least you can do!”

“Grandpa, I will not name our child after you!” Beiye shouts with a blush, and her crafty grandfather has a triumphant smile. “I, I will go ahead and call the car!” She stomps away from the part, leaving her healthy grandparent behind.

Sheng Jie takes a full, deep breath that he couldn’t perform in years, settling into a practiced meditative state. The elder breathes for nine cycles with his eyes closed, opening them on the tenth cycle and waving his hand at a tree.

Blam

A tree branch falls on the ground, and Sheng Jie lets out a complex sigh. Disappointment over how much his cultivation had deteriorated, and excitement for the opportunity to restore his strength. He doesn’t need to depend on expensive elixirs to prolong his life, nor does he risk his life doing some light exercise he did while young.

It was time for the Sheng family to take a resurgence in the Jianghu and take down the Weng family a peg or two. They got too arrogant these past few years. “Tying our Sheng family to Mister Yamcha would be ideal, but if he can take my granddaughter as a disciple is also fine. I need to repay him properly, and then bring him into our sphere of influence.”

Today, an old Tiger got back his fangs.

Unaware of the chain of events that he put into motion, the young Yanchit Davis rushes to his home until he’s standing in front of his door. “Hey, godfather, I’m here!” He takes his keys and opens the door. “The hospital discharged me today!”

A man comes out running half-naked save for a towel at his waist and a mop of grey hair full of shampoo. “Little Yan, you’re back!” The older man hugs his godchild whom he came to love as his child. “I was worried about you! I got a call from the hospital yesterday that you might wake up soon and I was going to visit you today. How come they discharged you? Are you alright?”

“Hey, godfather, I’m alright.” Davis hugs back his father figure. They discharged me because of… monetary issues,” Davis admits, making his godfather grimace, “but I’m fine! Really!”

The godfather looks up and down at Davis, noticing how thin his godchild has become. “You need to put some more meat in your bones.”

“And you need to finish bathing. You stink, godfather.”

“I stink, you stink! Your entire family stinks!”

Yamcha grins a the verbal trap. “And you’re my only family.”

“Insolent brat,” the godfather says while waving his finger at Yamcha, “just let me finish washing and I will show you to respect your elders.”

Yamcha lets his godfather go back to finish showering while he fixes himself a plate of food. After making a large portion of egg fried rice Yamcha looks over the notes sent from college that his godfather saved for him. There are several group assignments he will need to do alone, while the class representative reminds him of the school event he needs to participate.

There is also a mocking “get well soon” card that snuck around his possessions, and a hundred bucks of ghost money as a “gift.” The previous Yamcha would be furious at this blatant disrespect and harassment, but after dealing with the Red Ribbon Army, Demon King Piccolo, the Ginyu force, fucking Freeza, and finally “Mr. Perfect Cell,” a bunch of second-generation young masters with too much free time in their hands is the least of his worries. Scratching his neck, Yamcha wonders if he can make some extra cash by undergoing his Kame-style training to rehabilitate himself.

Despite going out of his way to abuse the dragon balls to improve his potential, he still needs time to train.

“Oh well, that’s future me’s problem. It’s not like I am in a hurry.”
