Patreon Updates

This won't impact current members, but apparently Patreon is being forced to make billing changes due to Apple IOS requirements. The short version is that we all have to switch over to a subscription billing cycle, meaning that people will be charged monthly on the day they join, not the 1st of the month like it is now.
Existing members will still get charged on the 1st of the month, but I know some folks drop off and come back. When you do that going forward, you'll then get charged on that date instead of the 1st. It's not a huge change, just more of a hassle for creators who now have to monitor billing stuff all month instead of only once at the beginning.
The biggest change will be for folks who primarily use the IOS app to sign up. Apparently Apple is forcing Patreon to pass along their 30% IOS service charge on "transactions". What that means is that anyone who signs up via the Patreon app on an IOS device will now be charged a higher price than someone who signs up via computer/android device.
I emphasized that last line because, again, if someone currently using an iPhone or other IOS device decides to drop off, the price will likely be a few dollars higher if you sign back up via the app. The rates aren't changing if you use a browser on your phone, computer or android device to sign up, so please plan accordingly.
And just to clarify - you can always sign up as a member via your computer at the cheaper rate, and then continue to access the Patreon IOS app as always. This extra cost ONLY applies when someone uses the Patreon IOS app to join as a member to someone's page. Accessing the content doesn't change, regardless of how you sign up.
That extra 30% also goes straight to Apple, not me or Patreon. So, you know, keep that in mind. I'm not any more thrilled about this than you are. Apologies in advance if this causes any headaches.

2024-08-12 22:22:16 +0000 UTCTraditionally, Apple controlled their own ecosystem (iOS apps). They don’t control the internet, and so purchasing through Safari should be the same as purchasing on the desktop through a browser.

2024-08-12 22:17:57 +0000 UTCIn case anyone else sees this and reads and doesn’t know, you won’t get charged the extra Apple tax, unless they’ve changed it recently, if you sign up via the Patreon website with safari or any other browser on an Apple mobile device. It’s only for in-app purchases.
