I've been thinking about this since you guys started the show, but I'd like to implore you to look into the 2014 Sewol Ferry Tragedy if you haven't. There's a YouTube video I watched by Rotten Mango about it that was done really well, and it's actually what initially led me to starting this show. There are a lot of similarities, inspirations, critiques, and symbols included in the show that people have pointed out as feeling reminiscent of the tragedy. For context the ferry sinking led to 304 deaths, including 250 students from the same high school in South Korea as they were headed to Jeju Island for a field trip. Once the ferry was in trouble the captain and crew abandoned the ship after making an announcement for everyone to stay put, essentially dooming everyone else on board. I always see it mentioned that Korean students are very respectful of adults and authority, and that because of that respect they obeyed the orders and that ultimately that obedience killed them. It took 2 1/2 hours for the ferry to sink, so the students were texting, making phone calls, and video taping goodbye messages for the families. Even Prez and Su-hyeok being tied together may be a homage to a high school couple that had been found by a diver with their life jacket cords tied together. I don't think we've seen this yet but the show also uses yellow ribbons as a sign of remembrance, which has become synonymous in South Korea with this tragedy as that was the symbol used as well. The government really butchered this situation. The deaths were preventable had they actually been honest and stopped turning down help. Apparently we, the US, had a ship nearby and offered to help and were declined. As the ship was almost entirely submerged, parents were being told their kids were saved already when they hadn't been. Overall, this was a very sad and infuriating tragedy and I imagine the story this show is telling is not lost on its Korean audience.
