Thanks you for this comment! I didn't know about the ferry sinking. I'm still new to kdramas and Korean culture, so far in the past 6 months I've seen a dozen kdramas. I knew about younger people having to respect older ones and how this tradition can be misused but I didn't know more. It gives a whole different impact to the dialogue about whether it's a country that mourns more for the adults or the children.

In terms of the questioning and not trusting adults in this series, I think it’s important to note the political climate and societal failure the show may be commenting. As one of the commenters brought up, one of the most jarring tragedies that occurred in South Korea was the Sewol Ferry Sinking which took the lives of 300+ people, most children and teenagers. They died essentially in vain given that the captain and crew refused to allow them to be rescued first (and evidently rescued at all). The South Korean government tried so hard to cover up their unwillingness to help the teens that the president at the time was impeached. Many young people in Korea lost complete respect for the adults that failed the children that died, and lost respect for the culture surrounding respecting the elders at essentially the cost of the young. Here the series lays out that dilemma quite effectively. The adults are in fact not choosing to save children, and focusing instead on “VIP” adults. But we are also shown that although it is deeply embedded in the government and societal systems, there are still the outliers (the cop w the baby, the father w his daughter, the soldier pointing the politician’s privilege). Which I think mirrors how common civilians (fishmen lending their boats to help, divers lending their help and even dying to find bodies) and the parents of the deceased took it upon themselves to tackle the tragedy. It is a phenomenal tackling of children losing faith in their elders but finding community and care and hope in each other.
