Something in the story reminds of the fantasy story in His Dark Materials (you should def react to the series so I won't spoil anything), where they, well, sever kids from the spirit animal accompanying them, because doing so make the kid in theory a blank slate, an obedient person, but in reality it is taking away their soul. Here in Severance when the woman was saying "enjoy each facts equally" and punished the guy for showing interest + in this episode in the Perpetuity Wing when a recording of the founder said that "frolic" was among the 4 main traits of people, it makes me think that they are trying to create "blank slate humans", who don't have any deep emotions whether negative or positive (and so are better controlled?)
The black goo that the guy was hallucinating (in the previous episode) reminds me of the same goo in Locke & Key (another great show you guys should watch) that was shown in an episode when the characters entered the mind of a person possessed by a demon, and it showed the consciousness disappearing more and more under the goo. I think it can be an interesting representation of neurological/consciousness issues, like losing yourself.
Just my random thoughts after ep 2 and 3 lol. On to the next one! Fun to watch with you guys 😁

Oak's face during the "muscle show" talk was gold. I could tell he was biting his tongue so hard it bled.

Gents your reactions totally remind me of what my brain was going through when I first watched this season - and I'm loving it! 🤘😁

There's no spoilers LOL. It's exactly what it looks like in the show. A self-flagellating self help book about finding who "you" are, mostly told as anecdotes from Ricken's personal life 😗 It's actually pretty entertaining

"I just want Ricken's book." Answer, it actually exists. 😁 You can download it for free on Apple Books. I wouldn't just yet though. I haven't read it (yet) but it was released when season 2 episode 3 dropped so I would presume that reading it early could be spoilery somehow.

The writers on this episode are Andrew Colville, Dan Erickson, and Anna Ouyang Moench. There's a writers' room with many talented writers in it. Dan Erickson created the show, but he did not write all of the episodes.

oh - one thought - you guys were talking about being so zoned in on "trying to figure it all out" -- I would recommend not focusing so much on "figuring it out," but rather on, let's call it collecting data. They're showing you things and telling you things that are going to be important later (this is not a spoiler; this is how good story-telling works), and you will be in a better position to start making sense of things if you keep track of the info they give you -- even if that info seems pointless or doesn't currently make any sense. This show isn't goofing on you with false leads and it isn't trying to get you to believe one thing just to shock you with something else - they are laying pieces of the puzzle out for you, sometimes in a throwaway line, sometimes in a pre-recorded narration played in the perpetuity wing, sometimes in an interview with Natalie on the news (Natalie's not a news anchor - she was being interviewed by the news about Lumon, where she works, and the practice of severance) -- sometimes even in the weather report. Collect data. For example - DD's comment about "the candle went over my head" -- that's fine. Just remember that it happened. Mark's neighbor, who is also his boss, took a candle from a storage bin in his basement. Do you remember what was written on the lid of the storage bin? We saw it in an earlier episode. Collect data.

To answer your question on who the writer is, it's Dan Erikson, and its his fist show which is mind blowing how sensational his first creation has become! Ben Stiller became involved after reading the pilot script, which was initially meant as a writing sample. He then helped bring the project to life, directing 6 episodes in season 1 (I think 5 in season 2) and serving as an executive producer.
Fun fact- Dan came up with the Idea of Severance when he was working at a door factory and going through a bad break up and wished he could fast forward to the end of the work day. And Severance was born!

Re: Dave's question about the release schedule - in season 1, the first two episodes came out on the same day, and then it was weekly after that. In second season, it was one episode per week - no doubling up on the premiere.

it's obviously a dramatic exaggeration, but many family-run corporations do have displays like that. i worked for a fortune 500 private "family company" and they literally do have sections at the corporate campus which showcase the history of the family and what they did with the company. most of the crazy things you see here are basically inspired by real life corporate office environments.
