In the original version, the princes had a reprise to the Agony song. And it was obvious when Jack's mom died because the Stewart smacked her over the head with his staff. He didn't just push her. The Wolf originally was a naked wolf with a large... package. And the story of Little Red was about the wolf representing a child predator. So both songs Little Red sings is more touching and metaphorical when you think of it in that light. In the original the narrator gets sacrificed to the giant first. The whole musical is full of life lessons. The original full musical is on Youtube. They took enough out of this version that it makes the original worth watching because of that. The original musical is a much darker vibe.

Anika

I really enjoy this musical, I think Disney did a fine job at turning it into a movie. My high school put on Into The Woods and I think that makes me very biased on adoring it over a lot of other musicals. I enjoyed rewatching it with you all! I feel that this musical has a good lesson for its story.

Wonderxfull

Well, in the original tale, Ariel dies and turns into a sea foam; Snow Whites evil step-mother is invited to the wedding and gifts her shoes that make her dance to death and the Little Match Girl dies of cold. But the most disturbing for me is The Bluebeard fairy tale...

Gerry G

Have you heard more disturbing versions ?)) More adult and dark

Mariia K 🇺🇦

Hoping for Chicago as the next musical!!

Cara Fernandez

I'm a bit late, but on the matter of The little red riding hood - yes, in the original fairy tale the wolf swallows the grandma and the girl whole and the hunter cuts his belly to free them. Then, he fills the wolf's belly with stones and drowns him in a well. Original fairy tales are simultaneously badass and scary...

Gerry G

This is a fun musical, but I’m disappointed you didn’t react to Les Miserables first. The actor who played Jack was in Les Miserables.

Ginger

I'm gonna suggest Les Miserables 2012

Bartimaeus

mamma mia is a masterpiece

charlie1097

Pleaseee watch Mamma Mia to see more of Meryl!!

Oh, a lot of the original fairy tales are so dark; the earliest version of Sleeping Beauty was written by a man called Giambattista Basile and was called "Sun, Moon and Talia." The princess is called Talia in this version, and it's predicted by astrologers at her birth that a splinter of flax will kill her; all of it is banished, along with hemp and other materials. A passing female peddlar intrigues the princess and she's spinning what else? Flax. Talia tries it, it gets wedged under her fingernail and she drops dead. Her father lays her body in a manor in the country and then promptly forgets about her for years; another king passes by one day while hunting and finds her. He tries to wake her, but when he can't, well......he r*pes her. Yeah, he actually r*pes her and then effs off back to his kingdom and his WIFE. Talia is only awoken once her children, Sun and Moon, are born and one of them sucks the splinter out of her finger while it's trying to nurse. The king comes back and is overjoyed to see he has twins and that their mother is awake; when he explains what he did, is she disgusted? Nooo, of course not. She's happy and they grow even closer. Meanwhile, his wife is suspicious of her husband's "hunting trips" and thinks he's having an affair out in the woods, and when she does discover Talia and the children, she has the kids brought to the palace. Talia is none the wiser and lets the children go to their father; the wife orders the children to be COOKED and FED to their father for his infidelity, but the cook and his wife hide the children and instead feed regular old lamb to the king. The queen then sends for Talia, accusing her of being a husband-stealing homewrecker when she arrives; Talia is all like "Um, actually, he r*ped me while I was unconscious and I never knew he had a wife." The queen won't listen and tries to have Talia thrown into a fire, but she stalls by taking off her clothes one by one while screaming loudly the entire time, which the queen doesn't mind in the slightest because she wants Talia's nice, jewel-encrusted clothing. The king finally arrives and is shocked to see what's happening; when he questions her, the queen tells him that she fed him his b*stard children. In a rage, he kills the queen and her accomplices by throwing them into the fire that was arranged for Talia. He tries to throw in the cook, but he and his wife present the children, so he's spared and the king marries Talia. So to summarize, there's neglect, r*pe, infidelity, mentions of cannibalism, an unwanted strip show and multiple deaths. The Charles Perrault and Grimm versions are actually less dark, and those are the versions the Disney movie is based off of.

Taryn Ford

I can agree with that, hearing Pinocchio's original story (how it was written) to seeing what we got in the Disney version, they were massively different endings. Idk about the other fairy tales but I know Pinocchio's was exceedingly dark.

I'm Batman

RT scores can tell you whether most people enjoyed or didn't enjoy something. It's a decent barometer most of the time. It's not scientifically accurate but it's not meant to be - you can't be scientifically accurate about perceptions of art. It's a decent general gauge.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

I beg you to go see it on stage.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

If you're listening to the soundtrack you're missing important songs. Listen to the original cast recording instead

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Agree that Sondheim is beyond amazing. The more you study his work, the more impressive it gets. Absolute genius - unfortunately this movie sucks and so the songs fall flat. It's a shame. Sweeney Todd is a masterpiece - but the move is pure shit. It's awful. If someone has only seen the movie version of Sweeney Todd, they've never seen Sweeney Todd.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Backing you for 100% on Moulin Rouge and Chicago. Hairspray and Dreamgirls are fine, but I really really really want them to watch Chicago and Moulin Rouge so much.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Please no -- unless it's the filmed stage version with Angela Lansbury.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

100% Moulin Rouge - it really broke the mold. Considering how much these guys appreciate the use of music in Peaky Blinders, they ought to see where that idea came from.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

The original is great and it's (as Mabi says) free to watch on YouTube. The Princes are meant to be terrible, because this musical is a combo of two main ideas: 1) fairy tales never cover what comes after "happily ever after," which leads people to believe there's a finish line after which everything is perfect forever, and 2) Disney ruins fairy tales. Fairy tales are DARK, and purposely so. Disney has sort of destroyed the whole purpose of fairy tales. The wolf's song to Red is super-creepy ON PURPOSE. That is absolutely what the wolf is meant to represent in the original fairy tale. Also WAY too many important songs were cut.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

This is my #1 pick for their next musical - it combines everything they love about movie musicals with being a terrific adaptation from stage to screen.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

When it comes to musicals, you must watch Chicago. You will love it

Just Lily

Nah I'll give the original musical a chance, feel like (like most cases) the original will be better. Only thing I won't like is the wolf creep stuff but I won't let that drive me away from what I'm guessing is a far better musical. Thanks for letting me know it's available on YouTube for free!

I'm Batman

Then again if you didn't like things like the princes turning out to be assholes (in the original musical both of the princes turn out to be horrible husbands in act 2 to subvert the archetype of the kind fairy tale prince, but for some reason in the movie only Cinderella's prince sucks) or the Big Bad Wolf being creepy (he's even creepier in the original) then you might not like the original musical either

Mabi

This movie is a bad adaptation of the original musical, perhaps you might enjoy the original more. It is free to watch on youtube.

Mabi

Good one 👍

Mariia K 🇺🇦

Hard disagree. I love Sweeney Todd 🤷🏼‍♀️

Olive_Sandy

Why couldn't it have been James Corden's character that fell to his death? Sorry, not the biggest fan of him. Yeah, this was not one I can say I really enjoyed. Not sure why I didn't like this since fantasy is my favorite genre, this is the first fantasy movie I've seen that I can honestly say I'll never watch again. The music itself was just very average, maybe I was just expecting too much, I don't know. Also it was very strange to have the prince marry Cinderella and then a few scenes later he's making out with Emily Blunt out of nowhere. And that wolf song to Little Red Riding Hood just came off really creepy. Yeah this I'll give a 1.5/5

I'm Batman

Please watch Jack The Giant Slayer it's soooo good

Mikayla Williams

I didn’t care much for this either but honestly RT scores literally mean nothing

Katie

I saw Merrily We Roll Along when it was on broadway this past run and that is what got me more into Sondheim. He is amazing

Katie

That’s such a good one! And Les miserable and moulin rouge would be fun too! And honestly I’d like to see them do an older classic like fiddler on the roof

TeawithIrohPearls

Sondheim is brilliant. The motifs in Sweeny Todd...mind blowing. Company is amazing, too.

Bluhawke

Guys, you should definitely watch The Phantom of the Opera 2004 - one of the best musicals ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

Mariia K 🇺🇦

I'm so glad you guys checked this out, and I appreciate your reactions. I always loved Into the Woods but don't think of it has outstanding in a Wicked or Hamilton way, just a more realistic, fun, smart combination of classic tales tied together with an intriguing original story (the baker and his wife). When this first came out, I enjoyed that Into the Woods showed what happens after the happy ever after and didn't shy away from many of the gruesome details in the original Brothers Grimm stories. Sometimes, things don't end up perfect, things go wrong, people die, and that felt refreshing for me to see. As always, I love y'alls honest thoughts and ratings, it's a pleasure to watch movies with you each week.

Charles Amadeus

I second this 💯💯

Kyra Brown

Same

Kyra Brown

For someone who never seen the broadway musical and I only watched this back when it first came out in theaters and went in with no expectations and actually really enjoyed it and lowkey I think it’s underrated cuz nobody really talks about it sadly most of music is great 😊

Kyra Brown

Love this musical! The stage version is better but I still love this adaptation. Went to go see this in theaters with my mom like 4 or 5 times when it came out.

TingKarg

Sweeney Todd please 🙏

calum1

Yall should see the original costuming for the wolf….its, ahem, something else. Lol.

Lauren

I hope we get Chicago, Moulin Rouge, Hairspray, and Dreamgirls soon! They're some of the best movie musicals out there.

Megan Schnese

That’s cool, I still think it’s alright

Mads

Okay, that made me laugh

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Sitting at a comfortable 49% at RT

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Sweeney Todd (the movie) so bad that I'd have a lobotomy just to forget I saw it. Sweeney Todd (the stage musical) one of the greatest works of art ever created.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

RIGHT? They so wanted to score it lower -- and they wouldn't have been wrong to! I hope that, before I die, someone makes a movie adapted from a Sondheim musical that doesn't suck. (West Side Story is only half Sondheim's, so that doesn't count.)

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

It's worth a watch for the cast alone - its a fun movie if don't take it too seriously. Chris Pine singing in Disney 'Wish' was pretty good. the movie has mixed reactions but I quite enjoyed it. (was made to celebrate Disney 100th anniversary so has a lot of references and nods - as well as the way they made it)

Lisa - Marie

Sweeney Todd so good that even at its worst its a 8/10

J Knight

Stephen Sondheim is an amazing writer. All of the witch's songs strike the heart, along with the other motifs. I like the movie, but nothing will ever top the original broadway bootleg. A fun fact: intermission lies at happily ever after, and the show always had a bunch of people leave an hour in because they thought it was over LOL

J Knight

I've never seen the actual musical though it seems everyone I've known who has always says it's far better than the movie lol...I actually love the soundtrack and to this day I still listen to some in my playlists

M K7001

i agree I dont think its a terible movie but I dont find it to be all that good either might check out the stage version because heard great things about it but this movie was just fine 2/5 for me

Anthony Velasquez

The pacing for Act 2 in the movie kind of fizzled. I know it's a bit much, but the recording of the Broadway show is rather different. Better the way that Sondheim wrote it. For one, you miss the reprise of the song Agony with the two princes falling in love with Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, but then sighing and singing, "Agony, that can cut like a knife.... Ah well, back to my wife." And the death of Jack's mother is far less ambiguous.

Adam Pacio

I don't really like this movie but I'm willing to watch it just to know what you think about it. Also, I just hit the part with MQ saying "now that's a prince you can trust" lol I can't wait what you think of what he did

Alexiani Gollarza

Glad to see you watching Into the Woods but you REALLY should react to the original as well, there is a great professionally filmed recording of the original Broadway cast available to watch, the movie is fun if you haven't seen the original but once you have seen the stage version you realize it can hardly even be called the same musical. The tone of the story itself is completely different in the movie, everything is dulled down, entire characters, songs, and plot points are cut out, the brilliantly executed comedy and themes and subversions and all else that makes Into the Woods a masterpiece of storytelling and a genius commentary on storytelling itself are so lost in translation in the film.

Mabi

I actually like the movie a lot for what it is. Obviously the stage show will always be better when it comes to this show, but I think the movie gets a lot of unnecessary hate 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mads

Honestly it's pretty terrible; don't push yourself too hard. I think they were even being generous with their scores given the looks on their faces lol.

Maisie

Which they should have watched instead!

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Yup - this is not a good movie adaptation.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Waddingham.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

I really really really hope they watch Chicago

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

If you enjoy a Broadway show, you come out humming the songs. The old joke is that when you don't enjoy a Broadway musical, you come out humming the scenery. When the first comment is "Hey, how about that set design!", you know it wasn't a great experience 😉 - I wish so much that you had watched the film of the stage musical instead of this adaptation. It loses a LOT in the translation, and everything they cut or changed made it worse, not better. Into the Woods on stage is brilliant. Oak - the little singing you did in the outro! Such a lovely singing voice! As for the songs not being bangers, - yeah, it's Sondheim -- and this is Sondheim's most accessible show. 🤣 There are Sondheim lovers and Sondheim "meh"ers. Part of the reason why is that Sondheim requires careful attention, and it gets better and better each time you go back to him, rather than smashing it out of the gate (most of the time). He's about musical and lyrical complexities -- he's not known as the Shakespeare of Broadway for nothing. As for people asking you to watch the Sweeney Todd movie - I know I'm just one voice among thousands here, but please, don't. Anyone who has only seen that movie and not a staged production of Sweeney Todd has never actually seen Sweeney Todd. It's one of the greatest stage musicals of all time, and that movie is hot garbage.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

100% on Chicago. Sweeney Todd is a TERRIBLE adaptation of the stage musical. It's atrociously bad and nobody who has only seen the movie version of Sweeney Todd has actually seen Sweeney Todd.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Oak, you’re right on the money with the movie cutting a lot from the show! For example, the stage version has an actual Narrator character that sits just off stage and interacts at times with the characters. The movie ended up combining his character with The Baker. This movie was my introduction to the stage musical, so it will always have a special place in my heart, but the stage version is far superior imo The musical was written by Stephen Sondheim and is basically a critique of fairy tales/morality stories where there are clear villains and heroes. The lines that encapsulate the message of the show for me are “Witches can be right. Giants can be good. You decide what’s right. You decide what’s good.” and “Be careful the things you say, children will listen.” If you’re interested in watching the stage version, a recording of the original cast is on Youtube 😊 Thanks for giving this a chance! Loved watching your reactions, especially to Agony 🤣

Sophia Sanchez

It's such a bad adaptation of such a good musical.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

FTW - Im really trying, idk if i can get through this one 😂😂😂

Steven W

I dislike Depp, but I adore that movie!!

Katie Madsen

Chicago and Sweeney Todd must be watched please!! 🙏

Olive_Sandy

I agree. I honestly, don't think this movie was a good adaptation of the stage show

I'm Just Alex

I loved Matilda the Musical! I think they'd probably rate it somewhere between Into the Woods and Chicago. I think they'd like the music very much, but I'm not sure how'd they feel about some of the more absurdist bits (acrobat storyline.) You should definitely suggest it in Recommendations chat; I'd love to see them react to it!

Maisie

Oooohhhh they should absolutely watch Matilda!

Mads

Now you gotta do Sweeney Todd!

MB

Do you think they'd like Matilda (2022)? In general, I think most movie version of musicals are subpar (compared to stage recordings), but Chicago and the netflix Matilda are among the only two that are just as good, maybe even better.

Bluhawke

I really think you should add Dreamgirls to the list, I know you'll enjoy the music and performances of the actors!

Brooksie

Yeah...not surprised at their scores. I think Chicago is def. much more up their alley. Thanks for trying it, guys!

Maisie

Have you seen the Regents Park Open Air Theatre version? The staging is so cool and Hannah Waddington kills it as the Witch!

Bluhawke

Fine feathered friends and foes 🫡

Steven W

The original show is better…but the movie still is fun!

Kaley

An underrated musical!!

Lizzie🦇

We love every bit of this and what we do. Thanks to you and all of the supporters here Hope you enjoy 🤙

Y’all have been serving me with so many of my childhood favorites lately 😭😭 I grew up with the 1999 DVD of the Original Broadway Cast!
