Ah the magic of this whacky, absurdist bit of humor. I love this movie. You noted that they never even name the empire that Kuzco rules. The heavily-distorted-through-fantasy-and-humor basis for this fictional word is the Inca Empire in South America. Their capital city was Cusco, and the territory stretched through the Andes mountain range. The most famous remaining landmark from the Incas is Machu Picchu, which is a mountain resort/private city for the ruling Incas about 50 miles away from Cusco ("Kuzcotopia", in the parlance of this film). The behind-the-scenes story for this film is WILD, and has enough story to make its own new movie. It was originally envisioned as a musical, and some songs were even recorded before the ENTIRE THING was re-done.
