I *think* the idea behind the bungee jumping inside the gym scene was 1) a form of hazing and 2) the colonel basically demonstrating that he could do what he wants when he wants. That doesn't make it any less weird, mind. It IS weird for him to have so much power and authority over school administrators. But it recalls that earlier scene where the principal was not keen to just expel Julie outright - only for the Colonel to override him. The principal didn't put up any argument at all. It doesn't *really* explain the bungee scene, but it's a similar display of total disregard. The genuinely weird part is simply that it doesn't make sense why the Colonel would give a damn about such a display at the prom. The only thing that makes any sense to me about it is that he was testing the loyalty of his recruits. Seeing if they were prepared to do stupid shit for no reason at all other than because he said to.

2025-01-13 19:22:05 +0000 UTCMan, I had a blast watching this, I didn't remember a thing about this movie (except how much of a crush I had on Hilary's character) since it had been around '97 when I watched it last, I wasn't even double digits then. The cheese was just right for me but the ending fight was lack luster (that's the only thing I didn't like about this movie). For me I'd give this a 4/5 overall though. Gonna go back and revisit the first karate kid movies and check out cobra kai (haven't watched the series yet).

2025-01-13 02:11:10 +0000 UTCI've never thought the writing for this movie was bad so much as it was incomplete. It always felt like there was a producer somewhere that was just staunch in their decision that it didn't need the ends tied up and to keep it short. I feel like if they had even 20 more minutes and a couple shaved off the extended shots they could have had the simple explanation for the gym, the team up fight with Julie and Eric, the grandmother coming home, and the colonel getting arrested. The car blowing up was always the stupid part to me as a kid. That's psychotic. That was just the 90s movie mentality demanding an explosion, it had no real place in the movie. The bungee jump in the gym I always account to the colonel being an ass and wanting the kids to be terrified that his people could be anywhere, they were never safe from him. And in having his team do it they didn't bother to account for the prom decor, because obviously none of them actually care if the others get hurt. Let's face it, all of them should have been in jail at that point for the shit they had pulled. In all I do actually like the movie and think that Julie is a good character that bonds well with Mr. Miyagi. I feel like it being a girl main character also was a bit off putting for a lot of boys back then. They just couldn't relate to her then like adults can when you have some maturity and life experience to view it through. As a girl growing up watching it I loved having Mr. Miyagi treat Julie just as he did Daniel and believe that she was strong enough to fight her own fights. As an adult I love that their shared experience of grief was explored as a necessity of life and showed that it does pass and that you can keep them with you without pushing everything else away. Watching him teach her how to continue living past the anger always gets to me.

2025-01-12 20:17:05 +0000 UTCI always thought the bungie jumping into prom and breaking stuff and hurting themselves fit right in. Don't get me wrong, I totally agree with you guys about it, but those guys are idiots, and so it fits they would do something stupid like that without thinking about the repercussions. In high schools across America there were always dummies who would do stuff like that recklessly. I dunno I think different people had different experiences in high school. All the stuff that Cobra Kai does and the bullying. That stuff happens in schools, and going as far as blowing up someone's car. That's just Hollywood. 90s Hollywood someone breathes at something the wrong way and it explodes. But as far as destroying someone's car yeah that isn't all that far fetched when you have people who are assholes.

2025-01-12 17:02:22 +0000 UTCThe creators of Cobra Kai said Julie is cannon in the universe, but Hilary Swank said they never contacted her about appearing on the show. I wonder if that's changed. I hope she pops up toward the end of Cobra Kai. We doing Karate Kid (2010)?

2025-01-12 03:50:11 +0000 UTCLove this film, mainly for the Miyagi and Julie scenes😊 I think I have seen another film with a similar concept of the prom scene and the bungee jumping (can’t remember which it was tho) that situation was also a teacher that told them to do it as the teacher wanted control of everything and wasn’t happy that the other kids were having fun so wanted to ruin it (I’d didn’t really understand it then either but seemed to be trying to make a big impact, insert dominance and make as big disruption as possible) so I’m guessing since I've seen something similar it didn’t affect me as much lol, something that I did think was missing at the end was a scene of Julie and her grandma reuniting and making up after all the arguing previously so I was kinda disappointed by that
