In regards to the Wizard of Oz, in the Wicked Witch of the West's defense in wanting to kill Dorothy and Toto, the 2 of them rode into Oz in the very house that shushed her sister to death, so... Nessarose is an absolutely garbage sister and horrible person but that does not mean she deserves to be led on by Boq. I think you guys are the first reactors I have seen who understood that Boq's lies and settling with Nessa who really likes him, is cruel, not sweet! To me Galinda/Glinda will always be the villain (well, the overarching villain of Oz, though it is the Wizzard and Morrible who are the main villains of Wicked part 1). The only semi redeeming quality of Galinda/Glinda is her "friendship" with Elphaba, which has been 100% transactional from the beginning when Galinda cleaned up the mess of her own cruel prank at the Ozdust ballroom, and not even out of genuine kindness or remorse but only after finding out Elphaba handed her the one thing she wanted most, to learn sorcery from Madame Morrible! Elphaba, who has never had a friend before, believed Galinda's gifts and "friendship" were truly genuine. Then, once they got to the Emerald city and saw haw corrupt and evil both the wizard and Morrible were, Glinda gaslights and abandons Elphaba to side with the fascists immediately after they publicly insult and vilify Elphaba. So Galinda gets no kudos from me for her actions at the Ozdust, nor does Glinda get the benefit of the doubt in the Emerald City Glinda because she never planned to leave with Elphaba, that was clear in her expression before she called away to grab the cloak.

I very much enjoyed watching it in the movie theater in November and didn’t know it was a part 1 until I saw the title screen in the theater which surprised me since it was a 3 hour stage musical. It felt deja vu but it's not the movie's fault, I'm only now realizing that the series Once Upon A Time just totally ripped off the musical for one of their seasons (around 8 or 10 years back) 😳

But the ones like Chicago and Les Mis that I think are improved by the movie (due to the actors impo) are the ones that bring out all the big feels. I was a big fan of Wicked and Moulin Rouge on stage, but not nearly as much by the movie, personal opinion of course. So I'm all about rewatching Les Mis with the fellas 👍🏻 YES PLEASE!

And Cynthia Erivo, oh my god, what a voice, I didn't know who she was before this movie and she really surprised me. Both of these women did a great job.

2025-01-06 03:33:39 +0000 UTCNo spoilers here but some fun facts for the 4 of you. - Cynthia wore micro braids to honour black women in theatre - the movie has been in production for the last almost two decades - a lot of the sets are practical, they built most of it. - Cynthia and Ariana both sang live and performed their own stunts. - People did complain about the slippers not being red as appearing in the Wizard of Oz, but in the original story they are silver. - All the songs in Part 1 are songs from the stage production. However, they announced there will be original songs introduced for Part 2. - There are several call backs and Easter eggs to the original film. The poppies putting the class to sleep, the rainbow in the opening shot, the bikes with the baskets rescuing the cub, the B&W universal opening. It’s nice that people are now understanding the theatre kids and the love we have for this musical after so many years waiting for this adaption. Great reaction gents.

2025-01-04 20:33:56 +0000 UTCNO ACT II SPOILERS I love how this story explore goodness as one of the first lines being "Are people born wicked, or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?" One philosophical question for the ages. With that in mind we can see the true ethics of the characters and more important society's views on them. As Glinda being someone regarded as good when she is just appeling to the status quo. And Elphaba being the bad one for seeking trully good deeds but defying a set system. It's a wonderfull story of how they must learn from one another and change their ways. This is magifically done during the ballroom scene and the events leading up to them. As Glinda stars by doing a selfish act to get rid of Boq and even is regarded as "good" by Fyero as Glinda only sees goodness as a mean to get what she wants, so then Elphaba responds with a trully selfless act (even an inconvenience to her) to repay her for doing something good for someone else, as she believes is just. Triggers the tipping point for Glinda as she begins to understand true goodness beginning her "Glinda the good arc". But first she has to understand what goodness trully is. I mean i can go on an on abouth ethics and justice but for one i'll just thank you guys for watching this film. And i'm stocked for you to see what happens next. Big big big fan PS. Answer whispering the lyrics was me the whole time.

We have huge bonfires across the country and most of them will have a straw or newspaper witch on them. Often these witches are stuffed with whistling chaser type fireworks(which are called "witches howl" in Danish!). We say that we're sending them to Germany when they get burned - I often wonder if that's a "pay back" for the occupation during WWII 😂

That being said...she grew up privileged and hasn't faced adversity like Elphaba has. I think one of the best things that happened to her was meeting Elphaba. Elphaba challenged her, questioned her, and told her no. Galinda has always been surrounded by "yes men" that never held her responsible or accountable. Galinda has a good heart and potential to be a better person. We root for Elphaba because we as humans face our own adversity. They're both great character foils in the best way. 🩷💚

As a long time fan of the stage production, I was eager and a little anxious to see how they were going to bring the show to the big screen, especially since a lot of times, you tend to lose some of the "magic" of the stage production when it's taken to film, and of course, there was a lot of worry about who was actually going to be cast for the different roles in the film. Far too often, movies are cast with well-known names who are less trained as singers than their Broadway counterparts, so it's always a gamble. I think it was mentioned that all of the songs in this first part are in the stage show - however, I did notice one extra little song that was inserted, and that is that moment in the Emerald City when they present the story of Oz, as told by Kristen Chenowith & Idina Menzel. That part of "One Short Day" is not in the stage production, if I remember correctly. However, Jon Chu felt that the story behind the Wizard and the Grimmerie (the spell book) needed to be told to inform the audience better. And of course, it was a way to honor Kristen & Idina and give them a moment to show off their vocal chops with some of their iconic vocal riffs. I really appreciated, as you guys mentioned, the ultra use of color in this film. And watching it with you guys, it makes me wonder if the super bright and saturated colors were all part of the plan, as the Wizard of Oz (the film) was the first film in color, and the moment when the film goes from black/white to color was a moment that astounded audiences. I think that sometime over the next few months before the second part comes out in November, that you guys should do a review of the Wizard of Oz film, so that you can answer all of the questions you have about what the witch was like in the original film. :) Thanks for an awesome time!

She’s lived a very wealthy, privileged life where she is used to getting her way and all of her behaviour reflects that. Doesn’t necessarily make her wicked, it makes her human. People ask “so if Elephaba isn’t the villain, who is? Is it Glinda?” which is, in my opinion, the point of the story. Nobody is 100% good or 100% wicked.

The green makeup they used for her was toxic which could have made her sick and she was badly burned during the fireball scene. Not very safe sets back in the day. This movie made me almost cry at the end it was so amazing in the theater. Everything about it was amazing! The vocals are stunning. I have seen the show once. I don’t believe extra songs were added to this. I love the soundtrack I have been playing in my car to commute so much lol. Glad you watched it and enjoyed it. Have you seen hairspray the movie? I enjoy that movie too and very deep themes.

2025-01-04 01:57:37 +0000 UTCI’m commenting on this again, but if you guys are interested some of the production behind the scenes are fabulous. So much of the sets are practical, like the train is real and able to move on a track. I’m glad they spent the time and money on them because it makes the movie feel less fake. Even that Mount Rushmore style carving of Jeff Goldblum in the rock was real too which I was floored to find out. They also used a surplus of actual extras and dancers not just cgi-ing in people to fill the background. Also Cynthia did get herself painted green, she had the option to be cgi-ed or be put in makeup. Also I they sung on set so they had a lot of extra recording equipment. The lives without the sound mixing in the behind the scenes are fantastic. Ariana actually did vocal training for operatic singing. There’s just so much fun stuff and the memes from the press run it was amazing. The sing-a-long is very fun! On my third watch of wicked I went to the singalong and my AMC was half full and it was so much fun! If you’re unsure of going I’d watch a few TikToks of people who went to kinda see if you’ll like the vibe but I was so elated to be singing with people in the theater. The two girls who sat next to me were so fun and we talked a bit before the show and sang to each other it was super great, lol I kinda want to go again.

Y’all should check out some of the deleted scenes - I get why they weren’t included but they add a lot to the characters (especially Glinda and Elphaba’s friendship)! LOL at Mason Quinn’s immense dislike for Glinda. I think she’s definitely a little mysterious in this first part with her intentions. Something I noticed while watching was a lot of conflicting emotions from Glinda in the first scene, which was interesting. She looks like she’s holding back tears in some shots! Another thing I also noticed was is the only time Glinda really takes a stand, when she dances with Elphaba at the ballroom, the lighting makes her skin look green. 👀 Cynthia needs to win awards for her performance as Elphaba. I’m so excited to see how her story progresses in Part 2. Her performance during Defying Gravity makes me so emotional. Thanks for the reaction!! I’m so excited for Part 2. It has some of my favorite songs from the stage show. This first part was pretty accurate to the stage with no added songs, but they’re going to be adding a couple new songs for Part 2. Looking forward to it!

I've been a die hard Wicked fan for the past 13 years and its been my favorite musical ever since, and the rumour that they made a movie has been going around for 10+ years. So by the time it got ACTUALLY announed, I was kinda over it lol. I gotta admit tho, when it was first announced, I wasnt sure about it. Especially about Ariana being casted. No shade towards Ari, but back then I could NOT see her as Glinda. I never been more wrong. Her and Cynthia carried this movie! Everyone did a phenomenal job and I have to say, the waiting was definitely worth it. They added a lot of moments from the book into the movie, thats why, the first part has almost the same length as the whole musical itself. But I'm glad they did it. Better a super long Part 1 then the whole movie but being too stuffed. I absolutely cannot wait for Part 2, knowing the musical by heart, I can tell you guys its gonne be SO much better than Part 1! (I also kinda hope you wait with watching the stage musical until you watched part 2. I want you guys to go in blind :D)

I do not care one bit about that, the were SO MANY moments in this reactions that I loved, from Mason's skepticism (always side eying Linda XD) to the jokes about the prince, to personal jokes, to Answer not letting speak anyone (like the prince), the jokes on Mason's intuition, this reaction is gold and that you so much for being yourselves, that may sound weird but thanks for staying true to yourselves. The last few reaction have been a blast because of that, because you joke, you laugh, you cry, you enjoy everything you do and that makes us happy. 2025-01-03 23:59:59 +0000 UTCAlso Quinn really did not like Glinda I get that she is very unlikable but never did I think she was using Elphaba or acting like her friend she definitely cared about her but Glinda still has her own selfish ambitions there was a comment that was made that she was purposely distracting Elfie so she couldnt fly off and giving the guards time to catch up but didnt see it that way at all I think she was going to go but obviously was stopped and Madam Morrible ends up manipulating Glinda probably by promising to give Glinda all she wanted from the start

There's *some* green-screen work but a great deal of the sets are absolutely there, including the train. There are talking animals in Oz and it isn't considered odd, which I think knowing the original "Wizard of Oz" movie better would have helped with that - The Cowardly Lion speaks, so you would have been taken less by surprise by the talking animals. In the Oz books, the slippers are silver, not ruby - the movie "The Wizard of Oz" was showing off the new Technicolor procedure and went with bright red instead of silver. You'll note Nessa Rose has silver slippers. The ruby shoes Glinda pulls out in "Popular" is just a nod to the original movie. All of the songs in this movie are from the original Broadway show - nothing new was added. We have been told that there are a few new songs for Part 2. Oak - check your local movie theaters - many of them have showings of Wicked that are specifically identified as sing-along showings!
