You guys need to watch Bram Stroker’s Dracula (1992) with Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves.

SailorChristy91

After reading the book, a lot of people were skeptical and disappointed about Tom cruise being cast as lestat. But he completely nailed the part

Poppy

One of the most influential vampire movies not only of the '90s but of all time. I especially love the themes this movie and the book it was based on explore. What happens when a child is turned or when an entire society of vampires becomes too comfortable in their dark lifestyle. What becomes gospel to them, what becomes taboo? Truly a film that doesn't leave your mind for days after watching it. Hopefully for October you could venture into some more, I highly recommend What We Do in the Shadows. With you checking out Twilight, Underworld, Blade, and now this, I'd be curious to how you'd react to that movie's satirical and hilarious takes on the vampire genre as a whole. It stars and is directed by Taika Waititi of Jojo Rabbit fame, and his deadpan comedy is spot on in it. After such a dramatic and grim take on vampires, I think you'd appreciate a little levity from the horrific (albeit brilliant) subject matter.

Ethan Davila

I think one of the things we need to remember about Lestat is that he was unwillingly turned in the late 1500s as he says to Louie, he's been around 200 years before he encounters Louie in Orleans. (this differs ALOT from the book) The books of course have more detail of Lestat and his shifting sanity so by 94 Lestat is nearing on 500-600 years. Interestingly I don't think the "Stones" are mentioned by name but its a 90s Rock Band called "Satan's Night Out" that stirs Lestat from his slumber to become part of the band. The song <i> "I'm Not The Only One"</i> (best song on the OST) from Queen of the Damned (the second movie) is meant to be one of Lestat's songs.

Mudge Pendragon

@Aria or most of his earlier roles to be honest. I think him sticking to action films later in his career have people saying this.

Miya

Yeah I got into the first season right before they started airing the 2nd. Was sooo good, I got hooked immediately.

Bri

Eee! I've been waiting all month for this! Have to wait til tonight because my little sister and fiancé haven't seen it ever, so we're having a watch party. It's been years since I watched so I'm sure I forgot a bunch, but I've been wanting to rewatch it since I finished season 2 of the show. It just so happens your August trailer dropped around the same time and I figured I'd wait and rewatch with y'all.

Bri

This story had a lot of parallels to homosexuality and the struggle of it. I particularly think the part where Armand says that he knows nothing of God OR the devil is especially poignant. It really dispels that Believe that vampires behave the way they do because they are evil or satanic. All he knows is that he is cursed with this "affliction" that he cannot control or get a sign on . At a certain point, you find a place of acceptance, if only just for your own survival. Most embrace the so-called affliction as a gift, or at least natural. Others cannot make peace with it and remain tormented, believing it to be a curse. Or live in constant conflict of the uncertainty.

Tanner Blue

Queen of the Damned may not have been a good movie, but Aaliyah's performance was really great!

Tanner Blue

I totally agree. I often see people say he can't act/always does the same roles, I'm guessing they haven't seen this movie.

Aria Isara

The makeup in Twilight was so awful lol, but other vampire movies or shows I've seen were fine on this level. I never understood how it could be so bad in Twilight.

Aria Isara

I agree, unless you were actually watching AMC, I don't think I ever saw any promos anywhere else! I'm so glad the lack of of marketing didn't cause it's downfall!

Megan

If you didn't know, there was a huge conflict between Johnathan Davis (Korn) and his label so he wasn't able to release an official album, but instead asked his friends to cover his songs. That's why the official soundtrack isn't him performing. But I believe back in 2020, he finally released recordings of all the songs. I waited decades for it! And I downloaded every single one. I have listened to this movie's soundtrack on heavy repeat ever since I got my very first ipod classic!

Megan

So I loved Queen of the Damned. Aaliyah and the amazing soundtrack. Rewatching as an adult, I see the reason people dislike it, but it is still a favorite of mine. I think I was 8 when I saw the movie, could've been much younger, but I didn't realize Jonathan Davis was responsible for the soundtrack until much later. Makes sense because I'm a huge fan of Korn.

Megan

This is one of my moms favourite movies and by default it became one of mine when I was younger. From time to time I rewatch it and ...I still enjoy it :D So I am glad you did too! I had to laugh so much at Oak not knowing what to make of the movie XD Despite knowing it almost all my life... I totally get it!

AbraxasBelzebub

Echoing all the requests to please please please watch the AMC Interview with the Vampire TV show, season 1 now on Netflix! October would be theeee perfect month for it. 😉 I remember seeing this movie many years ago and liking it but the TV show has been stuck in my brain like glue since I saw it a year or so go because it's just that good. It's a massively high quality show with gorgeous dialogue, acting, and writing. The worst thing about it is that not enough people have seen it yet (looking at you, AMC marketing... I didn't even know it existed until a year after it first aired) to give it the flowers it deserves.

alee

Legends of the Fall and A River Runs Through It are both fantastic. Would love to see y'all tackle those, though I suppose they may be a bit too niche these days.

Dor

Agree about the makeup. As for the pacing, it's just how the book is set up. You can look at it as having an ACT I and II, before/after the Theatre des Vampires.

Thoma

I'm glad you guys mentioned the makeup, as someone who loves special effects makeup i really love how they did it for the movie, it's not corny like you said. So many vampire shows\movies just make them look so damn corny and it immediately makes me not wanna watch it. I do enjoy this movie (haven't watched the show yet but I know I need to) but I agree it kinda feels odd, the pacing maybe? It kinda bounces around weird

Amanda P

No, I get it!! It's such a rainy-day, chill vibe.

Jessie

The revenant with Leonardo DiCaprio 😁

MateoP

TV SHOW! TV SHOW! TV SHOW!

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

I think you mean interesting changes to the book 🤣

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

YES! The soundtrack, for being completely comprised of dark rock it's, oddly relaxing? I feel like that says something about me. 😳

LaLa

We don't talk about that movie, Lala! 😂 jk the Queen of the Damned soundtrack is still a banger.

Jessie

Like everyone else is saying, please watch the tv show

Clorox bleach G

Another note to join in on the conversation you guys were having at the end about this movie's staying power. I don't think it's necessarily because of the actors in it, though that probably helps. I think it's because of the author. I'd argue that Anne Rice's influence on the vampire genre is equivalent to Stephen King's influence on horror. We think of vampires the way we do today because of Bram Stoker and Dracula, her, and maybe, maybe Nosferatu. Nosferatu might be a stretch. There would've been no Twilight, etc., without this. This story was published in the 70's, and the last book in this particular series was written in 2018. That's a very long timespan for those characters to be hanging around in pop culture.

Thoma

I know I'm going to be roasted for this, but 'Queen of the Damned' is still one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies. Stuart Townsend actually reminds me much closer to book Lestat. 🤷‍♀️ Also Aalyiah crushed her role. RIP Queen 💗

LaLa

Please check out the show!!! It’s(in my opinion) way better than the movie and one of the best shows on rn

Jasmine

I'd die if you took 30 Days of Night on for Halloween

Paige Fraker

Besides Bram Stoker's Dracula, Anne Rice's series of books are probably the leading authority in fiction on vampires. She really set the standard for all future stories. It's been 20 years since I read them, but the way I remember Anne Rice's books, her vampires had such depth of feeling. Every small thing in their lives was super intense. Pain and pleasure both. That's difficult to convey on screen, especially in '94. Tom's Lestat was spot-on, though.

Kirstine Aaen

Patiently waiting for the show reactions

Steven K

it's almost distracting 😂

Jessie

Tom Cruise was AMAZING as Lestat. Believe it or not, he was not over-acting— this is book-accurate Lestat. Sorry if it's already been mentioned, but Anne Rice (the book author) famously HATED the idea of Tom Cruise as Lestat but then she saw the movie and issued an apology LOL his portrayal of the character was so much fun and flamboyant just as it was supposed to be, topped only by Sam Ried's Lestat in the AMC series.

Jessie

Tom Cruise as an effimanate and still very dangerous vampire always convinced me of his acting ability. Don't get me wrong, Tom Cruise is great in most roles, but this really feels like a role where he is out of his normal role. Kinda like Nick Offerman in The Last of Us. Completely out of left field, but really showing the acting chops.

Ullrich Pfeiffer

I hope this means you're going to check out the show. I'd argue that it's the best show on TV right now in terms of production, writing, and acting. After-reaction edit: Lestat is over the top. Tom Cruise wasn't overacting, but I feel like it's Tom Cruise being Tom Cruise. I'm thankful he didn't attempt the French accent. Sam Reid's version of Lestat (from the TV show) IS Lestat. It's the book version of Lestat come to life. He blows Tom Cruise out of the water. The movie is a pretty good adaptation of the novel, but even with the changes that the show makes -- changes which were approved and suggested by Anne Rice -- the show actually feels like a more faithful adaptation to the soul of the novel.

Thoma

I really hope you guys try the interview with the vampire show! I watched the show first and absolutely fell in love with it ❤️ I watched the movie later and felt the same kind of reaction you guys had to it. I think the show has alot more time to really get you invested in the story/characters, and they make enough changes in the show that it will still feel fresh for you guys even though you watched the movie beforehand. Plus it's only 15 episodes so it's not a long investment

Jesiii97

Watch the show

Destini

I hope you give the show a go! I remember loving the movie as a kid but as an adult, it kind of bored me. Tom is an amazing Lestat. But once you see Sam Reid's portrayal, you'll be blown away. The show is amazing and already working on s3!

Megan

The tv show is one of the best things on tv right now; hope you check it out one day. Also, as someone already mentioned, The Strain is really good too!

Laurie Lioux

How random! I live in Denmark but just visited San Francisco for the first time this July. Went to Alcatraz, did the audio tour and everything. It was amazing.

Kirstine Aaen

You need to watch the 2022 Interview with the Vampire tv show. It's phenomenal and they make some really interesting changes to the movie.
