EARLY ACCESS: Band of Brothers 1x3 FULL REACTION

Nothing to do with Hollywood. They adapted a book.

Paul D

Albert made it, not only did he make it, he went on to have a disguised career in the military. Winters never like how they portrayed his character, but it's Hollywood Thanks for picking this, as a veteran its nice to know young people are learning what and why we have our freedom today. Keep up the great work

jordantheonlygoat

I always enjoy your reactions and when I saw you guys were doing bothe Peaky Blinders and Band of Brothers I had to come back to Patreon. Wanted to know if you guys have considered The Last Kingdom on Netflix? Seeing David Dawson (Billy Kimbers account) made me think of it. He plays King Alfred. If you liked Vikings you’ll really like TLK.

... but we see Meehan's plane go down in episode 2. We see him on the plane when the left engine explodes. The fire engulfs all of the people inside in flames, and then it goes down.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

The way they filmed it though made it seem like Meehan was alive like he did survive the crash and having his laundry there gave me this weird feeling like he’d been alive all along, I was asking myself like is this guy hiding from everyone? But then I picked up on things when they finally got to Blithe’s laundry.

I know others have already suggested this, but the BoB documentary 'We stand alone together' is great, and many of the pre-show interviews from this series are in it. But I'd highly recommend Rom Livingstone's Video Diary too. It gives some great behind the scenes insights. There are also some great interviews from the Nation WWII channel on Youtube. Some great stories from the actors. They really are a bonded unit since making this series and. have reunions of their own. One thing the show makers touched on, is that it was so hard to get these guys to talk about themselves, so they hit on asking them about each other. They were always willing to talk about the other guys, so they got a lot of their material that way.

Esther Slaughter

i would recommend Casual Nerd if you're looking for people who really get into it and have a lot of insight.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

I always loved to see the different view point from the officers. I feel like Harry Welsh is on one of the extremes drinking alcohol and saying "It's just a game". Then you have Ronald Speirs on the other extreme being serious/calculated and saying "Accept the fact that you're already dead". Then there is Dick Winters who is kind of in the middle.

Just finished that watch along and I have to say the reason why I love watching movies and tv shows with you guys is that it's genuine. I can only really name a few reactors (for lack of a better term) who are also like this at least to me (Popcorn in Bed, Blind Wave, Cinema Therapy, etc.) and have a lot of insight as well. Sometimes there's people in film who react and get lost in the technicalities or the meta. There's also a slew of reactors who are in just for the clicks (especially with music reactions). But I absolutely appreciate you guys and how you watch these movies and tv shows, and very notably this one. My brother hates this trend of people reacting to things on YouTube, like he thinks it's a waste of time. I know a lot of people are also in the same camp. But for me, it's a great feeling to watch with other people who are passionate about movies and tv shows, stuff that sometimes is rarely shared with people I know personally. It could be shared appreciation, or even validation, I don't know. But it's a certain comfort being able to watch, even with people halfway around the world.

I had sorta the same reaction to the casting. I think for me it also felt like a bit more style than substance, or at least that the style didn't serve the substance of the story as much as I wanted. It might have been due to the editing or something. I haven't gone back and re-watched it so my memory isn't fresh, but sometimes it sorta felt like seeing disconnected scenes with the same characters. Band of Brothers felt more those characters stories were continuing on in the background between all the points at which we checked in on them. I'm sure part of that is down to the differences in the realities of what the shows were based on.

David

Oh man, I love this show. Haven't visited Patreon for a while but when I saw the YT cut of BoB Ep 1 on YouTube, I thought I don't want a YT cut, I want to rewatch the whole thing with you guys. Can't wait for the next.

The misunderstanding also happened because another soldier called Blithe did die in Normandy, so Easy Co. all assumed it was him.

Kirstine Aaen

I know HBO Max does, which I believe is their source for this material. I really don’t want them to see any names. One channel watched this and had a name or two spoiled. That’s why I’m trying to stop them before it’s too late!! Haha!

C Russ

Do the subtitles on Netflix say the names of the men in the beginning\end? My bluray copy doesn't spoil it..

Superpotroast

I believe we’ve met in other channels Band of Brothers threads. Lol

C Russ

This episode & the story of Albert Blithe are one of the few major inaccuracies of the show. However, it was not intentional or a creative liberty. Stephen Ambrose was collecting the stories from the men to write the Band of Brothers book. It was a common thought amongst the gentleman that Albert Blithe had passed at this point. Furthermore, with technology, not being quite what it is today the men simply lost touch with Blithe & were never the wiser. So at least they weren’t being deliberately incorrect.

C Russ

CAUTION GENTLEMAN!!! ⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️ You guys should turn off the subtitles so the names in the beginning interviews don’t spoil anything. The name reveal at the end is the biggest part of the show in my opinion I would hate for you all to spoil that for yourselves.

C Russ

Hey guys you have to react to the film Fury if you all haven't seen it yet. Crazy story, filmed similarly to the way this series is filmed. Very gritty. And outstanding cast: Brad Pitt, Shia Lebouf (who I feel stole the show when it came to performances), John Bernthal and Michael Pena. Fury is the name of their Sherman tank.

Ryan Towell

Meehan did not make it - his plane was shot down on D-Day. That's why Malarkey paused for so long after she asked him to take Meehan's laundry -- he didn't know what to say to her. Then she started listing all of the other names, who were all dead as well.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

The Pacific is very, very good. It's a different feel from this, and I think Band of Brothers is superior in basically every way, but Pacific is terrific. I was so excited for Masters of the Air, but was disappointed. I wanted to love it but I never even finished it. It just didn't hit the same way that BoB or Pacific did. I honestly think casting Austin Butler in the lead was what did that for me; he's a good actor, sure, but something about him rubs me wrong (it's his laconic, too cool for school delivery, I think), and what I love most about BoB and Pacific is that, while so many of the actors have gone on to become famous stars, they were almost entirely unknowns at the time, so having someone like Butler (and, to a lesser degree, Barry Keoghan) as the leads took something away from the show, for me at least. I'm sure plenty of people love Masters of the Air, and more power to them. It just didn't connect for me.

Jeff K

Agreed. This episode is basically watching PTSD impact a person in almost real-time. I admit, it's probably my least favorite episode of the series, but it's very important regardless.

Jeff K

What I appreciate about this episode is that it's not a "coward who redeems himself" story; it's a an exploration of how different psyches react to the fear that comes along with being in such circumstances that are just so outside the bounds of normal. We focus on Blithe but we also get those contrasting glimpses into the way other characters experience it, namely Speirs/Welsh.

David

Forgot about that one as well, Donna. I know exactly who you mean and have read about that as well. It's another instance of Ambrose only talking to certain people for his book, and getting solely their side of everything. Also, this just reminds me, damn do I love discussing this series. I was a history major in college, with a focus on WW2 and the Holocaust. My grandfather served as a gunner on a troop transport and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and apparently, the big thing that happens in the ninth episode is something that happened to him, as well. He died of cancer when I was 15 so I never got a chance to talk to him about any of this. I'll hold off expanding until we get to that episode.

Jeff K

The 1930 version is better. It actually follows the book. The 2022 version looked great and the acting was wonderful but as someone who is a huge fan of the novel, that movie missed the point of it entirely.

Donna Castellano

Theres another with a certain lieutenant later in the series. It was such an issue for the family, it came up as a question for the writers at the BOB 25th anniversary symposium a few years ago. I'll not expand right now since only Mason has seen the full series and don't want to spoil anything.

Donna Castellano

You guys need to watch The Pacific after this show is over. It was made by the same people and also really good. I also highly recommend Letters from Iwo Jima, which is about the Japanese perspective of the Battle of Iwo and is directed by Clint Eastwood. He also made Flags of Our Fathers which is about the US perspective of the same battle. Lovin the WW2 reactions so far!

Gk1498

Really enjoying these reactions. Would you guys ever be willing to check out Mad Men or Outlander? They are both fantastic shows. I think you guys would enjoy them.

Emily G

I want to 2nd The Expanse and Firefly Great movie picks but I think my upvote will count for more if I limit myself. Please watch those shows - they are both absolute top tier scifi and are absolutely nothing like each other.

LoTeq

That's good to know that they did, this show is phenomenal but that's the one giant, glaring mistake, more than anything else.

Jeff K

good suggestion!

KamiGema

That movie is sooo good and if they want to see how things was on the other side they could also react to All Quiet on the Western Front (2022).

hex1c

I'm glad you guys looked up Blith on IMDB.

Are you guys planning on watching the documentary called We Stand Alone Together it’s where the interviews at the beginning come from and its about the same length as an episode it’s definitely worth the watch.

Monkey

*1917 :) A phenomenal movie filmed to look like a one-shot.

Justin

Good to be back! Hey Dave I'm not sure If I've suggested it before but is 1918 on the list? Unbelievable WWI movie that is an entire one shot!

Ryan Bellefleur

Thanks for that!

Dirk Diggler

Have not yet started the reaction, but it's important to note: this has BY FAR the biggest factual error of the entire series. Blithe did not die from his wounds. He actually passed away in 1967, but he was not in communication with the rest of Easy, so they lost track of him and just assumed he'd died, and that's what Stephen Ambrose wrote in his book, and what they conveyed in the episode. He fought in the Korean War, where he earned both a Bronze and Silver Star for his service. (Apologies if this gets brought up in the reaction; I likely won’t have a chance to watch for a little bit here.)
