To me the "future" scene seemed like John was in delirium after the explosion which lead to him having this dream of his future. It was mentioned he has slept long after the attack, so I can totally see him dreaming of ominous things, especially after he saw Mariko die and held her dead body in his arms. How those experiences would give him that dream he once tried pursuing, and now after all he has been through, even his encounter with his former crew ...I think the vision turned into more of a nightmare. And in the end it lead to him rejecting that possibility. I hope this makes sense, I feel words get all so tangled when they try to leave my head X0

Makes Sense after seeing the crucifix go in the water 🤜🤛

John Blackthorne never made it back to England, so the beginning scene wasn't the future but alternate universe of if he hadn't given himself for village

So pumped that you guys dropped the last two episodes!! It was a great journey watching Shogun with you guys. The last episode where it shows John in the future holding the crucifix, to when he dropped it in the water really confused me. I had to do some research on that. I came across an interview with the creators of Shogun. This is just a quick quote from Jason Marks (answering what it meant when John threw the crucifix in the water): "That was the rejection of his future self. It was what confirmed, once and for all, that that future would never be possible: to say goodbye to her now, and not to bring her rosary home as some souvenir from a colonial exploit or something." So, the whole future viewpoint was John's vision of what he thought would be his life after Mariko's passing. This was my only complaint of the entire series, as I still find it oddly placed and confusing.

True, hence, he has to keep John close. He’s a new piece to play later who has knowledge of the outside world, but no earthly idea what happens on Toranaga’s home turf so to speak. He uses John’s ignorance of Japan and it’s culture to his advantage for sure to keep him at bay, but in a way, he’s playing all of us. What an excellent hand to play, and he already has the rest of the cards falling perfectly. I know some people speak about Tokugawa Ieyasu’s “luck” in history and since Toranaga is based off him, I wonder if this was a way to argue that one makes his own luck or something? I have no clue, I don’t even know what I’m trying to say. I mean I think Tokugawa was known as a strategist, but I don’t know if this is all based off his own writing or things written about him after (his luck and such as well as the extent of his brilliance). I know it’s based on the novel, but I don’t know what James Clavell’s research entailed… I wonder what his sources were… that would be fun to read! Regardless, for this story, Toranaga does embody all that you mentioned and it’s fascinating to watch it unfold in all its devastating glory.

I'm sure he knows that they're not telling him everything about the trades and foreign powers, but at that time, it would not be surprising if even his spies did not have enough info about the Western world. You only know what you know and don't know, right? But there's even more that you don't know you don't know! I think if anything, Toranaga's response to John's first explanation of the map and how 'ownership' is divided is a look of contempt mixed with anger. Anger that while he's weaving his master plan for absolute power by taking over Japan piece by piece, there are foreigners who dare to lay claim to the whole country as theirs without having to set foot on it and fight any battles. It's perhaps the biggest threat to him because he doesn't know enough about them unlike the regents who he has in the palm of his hand falling neatly into place as mere pawns.

Flora

Yes, it’s such an excellent, layered performance that sort of tricks you into a false sense of understanding. Even though we as viewers are privy to everything, we’re not really privy to EVERYTHING. But the story and his performance lull us into that sense. Actually, thinking back, this show has a lot of top notch subtle acting from so many individuals. I even wonder if Toranaga was as surprised as he played it off to see the map John draws in the garden way back in the very beginning. Knowing how calculated and how observant he is, not to mention his position at that time (he was in charge of trade or foreign affairs or something? I can’t recall the exact title), I can imagine he may have had some inkling of what was afoot. It’s just excellent, I really enjoyed this series.

Jess

Definitely. And that's why I think it has a lot to do with how Hiroyuki Sanada plays the character. He doesn't feel ruthless or anything like a dictator (which is essentially what a shōgun would be...someone with absolute power). If anything, we're all impressed by how Toranaga seems to know everything, anticipate everything...and yet, we don't even know the bigger picture and we worry when we think he's trapped at times. Instead, he's meticulously finding ways of getting ahead before anyone else can guess what he's up to. It shouldn't be surprising at the end but it IS when we, like Yabushige, think at times we understand what's going on until we realise that we, like him, have been manipulated into seeing Toranaga as what he wants us to see him as...a noble, bold man forced to use strategies when honorably doing what he must to survive and protect the future of Japan. Even with Mariko, he could have easily allowed her to take her life at any time. Instead, he said just the right thing at all the right times, using her love for her father and what he SAYS is her father's wish for her to be part of a bigger fight. She goes willingly to Osaka expecting to take her life one way or another because Toranaga knows what will happen there and this plan is the best outcome for Toranaga to get to Ochiba and basically take away Ishido's power by removing the heir's backing. Toranaga has no other way to change Ochiba's allegiance...he would just be going to his own death as the regents demanded. That's why he asks Mariko if she's ready before she goes. It's about whether she's ready to do her bit and take her life. Nothing about helping translate or taking the guns to Ishido was something she had to otherwise be 'ready' for. It's all in the wording and the superb acting. There are also lots of references to falcons...which, don't forget, are top predators. Toranaga is that falcon. He preys on others and only associates with those he sees a purpose for. He burns the ship to keep John because he knows what a fleet/Navy could offer him. He also knows what knowledge of the Western world or knowledge of the Christians' motives could do to help him manage trade, the Christian regents and any external threats to his power in Japan.

Flora

Agreed! I realized I started framing people and elements of the story as good vs. evil, friend vs. foe, etc. when there’s smoke and mirrors all around. I found myself thinking back to the beginning to see where he took a turn, but I don’t think there was a turn for him. He always had his goal, but he had to keep it under wraps. I mean he said it himself early on… “When will you understand? You are playing a game of friends and enemies, when you have only yourself in this life.”

Jess

Tokugawa Ieyasu,, that is who Toranaga's represent... His banner is almost identical with Tokugawa,, and yes Tokugawa Ieyasu reign is called "100 years of peace and prosperity" in Japan.. For me this is a "war" story,, not war like we used to see or expect "Battles, massive, hype, high adrenaline" but "war" to the deepest core,, strategize, adapt, patient, see.. war to ownself, to our own people, to outside party, to nature,, and how we adapt, and execute the plan.. Toranaga (ie : Tokugawa) really excell in all of this and no wonder he won and become Shogun.. A great quote from this episode for me is "Im not controlling the wind, i just study it" means im not a god who can control everything,, but i just try to learn everything and deal whats the best from it.. great review guys,, !!!!

It was amazing rewatching with you guys! Just some food for thought...I think Hiroyuki Sanada plays Toranaga in such a charismatic way that you're all for him as a hero. However, this last conversation he has with Yabushige really makes you question whether you've been rooting for the antihero or 'villain' instead! Are the sacrifices made really for the greater good of Japan? All the sacrifices have been of people close to him who care for him and willingly go to their deaths or do what's necessary because they believe in him and what he says he wants to bring into fruition. However, how much has he personally had to sacrifice? His son's death was unanticipated, but like he said...he has more. There's also something about the way he says Yabushige of all people should understand what this has all been about...which is when Yabushige finally comes to the conclusion that Toranaga's goal in his secret heart is really to become Shōgun...to have absolute power, like all the others who have fought against him and lost. He doesn't answer in words, but he doesn't deny it and his description of his plan of having his centre of power in Edo etc is very telling. The final smirk before beheading Yabushige is too. So the question is...has he been technically playing the long game with his cards held against his chest to achieve his goal? If that's the case, then that means even his best friend for life, Hiromatsu, believed him too...that he wanted nothing more than peace and safety for the heir. Being Shōgun is not the same thing. That therefore paints Toranaga very differently where he's not just 'clever', but beyond cunning and scheming. He is willing to sacrifice anyone and everyone if need be to get to his goal. It just wasn't worth his while to have no army left if he went with brute force. Very interesting and open-ended, I'd say...

In the future, the older version of John is holding a different cross. I was a bit confused at first too, but when they showed another scene with him as an old man and focused on the cross again, it became clear that it was different. I hope that the next season will be as good as this one. From what I've read, the creator initially intended the show to be a one-season series but then changed their mind and decided to make a second season.

I know how copyright laws work, just doesn't make sense how channels with thousands of more videos and tens of thousands more members can post full length videos for years and not have any issues with it. So, if they can do it, smaller channels should have zero issue. It makes sense to me why you blur it out, I just meant it makes no sense why they have no repercussions, maybe I could have clarified that some more.

Jesse Gutierrez

Chess is a VERY old game and Toranaga expertly played his pieces. He sacrificed key pieces so that his enemies would move into specific positions to ensure his win. We all called him a trickster, but Sun Tzu would say he's an expert strategist.

TexasSnyper

Jesse, it's illegal. I encourage you to look up Copyright laws. Very minium, when a studio finds out, they have the Patreon page shut down. Then the Reactors lose everything. There are very serious ramifications if the studios decided to take action against piracy, which is technically what they are doing. Reactors don't own these properties. Nor can any reactor afford the rights to distribute. That's really all I can say. Unless there's a loop hole they know about, it's illegal.

Badd Medicine

Doesn't make much sense to me why they blur their screen. I've been to three different patreons (Studio Gek, YaBoyRoshi, RT TV) and not one of them have had copyright issues for the combined thousands of videos they've posted. Why do they not have to deal with copyright?

Jesse Gutierrez

Hiroyuki Sanada who played Toranaga was also the producer and was involved with this project for almost 8 years before filming actually started. He's said in multiple interviews that this show was a one and done because they don't want to milk the book as they got most of it out in S1. So I'm worried that FX is doing this above the head of the production just because its FXs most viewed show ever and want to earn even more money.

Old John is a dream of a possible future back in England. He rejected that future when he chose to save the villagers and when he threw Mariko's rosary into the sea (note that in the dream he had her rosary still). So he is going to write a different future, in Japan, in service of the Shogun.

Apus7777

I read that there's still a lot of liberties they took for storytelling' sake vs the book and vs the real life characters. There was a John Blackthorne named William Adams. Circumstances of the real life Mariko's death was different. But from some experts who evaluated the show, (not really from me) say its accuracy is very high, like around 90%. Some inaccuracies are just general, like samurai would actually use their katanas as their last weapon, it's not actually dishonorable for samurai to use guns, etc.

the epi's title was 'dream within a dream' and i personally read that as occurring in a couple different spots within the last epi. the main one was john's dream of his future life - which i think was his dream before arriving in japan, and which died after everything from 1x9 and 1x10. i think the key to that is the grandkid calling the japanese 'savages' - no way would he have permitted that language in his household. recall from prior epis, too, the lines 'we live and we die' and the concept of building a house that can easily go back up when it's destroyed by nature. old john (metaphorically, and literally from the dream) was torn down by his experiences and he was rebuilt new, with new perspective and appreciation.

We will record it and then posted it after. Assuming no issues of any kind, hopefully within 2 hours of airing on HBO.
