technically the show is historical fiction since that's what the book is, loosely based on the power struggle leading to the formation of the tokugawa shogunate but if characters were based on real people, their names has been changed

The culture and larger events are accurate representations though. Also, John volunteering to be Mariko's second was so powerful because he knew how important her faith was to her and he couldn't let her do what she believed was damning herself to hell. Can't wait to watch the finale with yall!
