EARLY RELEASE: YT CUT Spirited Away

Comments

Spirited Away holds a very special place in my heart. It was one of my absolute favorite movies as a child. I'd say the point of the 2-hour adventure was simply it was the journey that taught a particularly timid girl to be brave, to stand up for things she believed in. Which definitely spoke to me as a kid. That said... I understand why there would have been such a big push to get you guys to see this one. (It was a huge part of a lot of people's childhoods.) But it's definitely not where I would have started you off in the Ghibli catalog, with the understanding that you're not already particularly well-versed in anime or Japanese culture. Something like Princess Mononoke definitely has a clearer message-- and is aimed at a slightly older audience. When Marnie Was There is a little mysterious but has more of a western feel to its story, as it was based off a book written by an English author. Castle in the Sky is such a classic... a mystical, fantastical adventure... but in a more generic fantasy land-- not so attached to a specific culture like Spirited Away is. I definitely recommend that one for you guys. It's very fun. Very 80s. Just all around a good time. I hope this hasn't turned you away from the genre or the studio too thoroughly... because they have a lot of great movies that I hope you get to see someday.

Mason's thoughts are always very basic, not surprised here either - i enjoy it though.

Princess Mononoke and Tombstone After Read Dead gameplay. 💪🏽

Troy

Dubs are the move with Ghibli movies fosho. It's a shame they didn't know that or some commenter told them otherwise. It is what it is!

dreg

Not to butt in but please do Princess Mononoke in dub, that movie has an amazing voice cast!

Amanda P

I can't speak for anime because I don't anything about it, only saw Spirited Away years ago and didn't like its vibe at all, but something I've noticed with Indian movies or with heavy metal is that a lot of people don't know that recommendations should be adapted to whether someone is a newcomer or not. They don't realize that some good content might not be appropriate for newbies because it will confuse them or because it's too different and requires getting used to a new style first.

Aria Isara

That was really funny 😂💀

Aria Isara

Oh yeah. Definitely will try it again and we'll probably do at least 1 in dub. 🤙

Badd Medicine

I'm back hoping you guys will give this amazing studio another chance soon. Recommending my two favorites, Princess Mononoke and Kiki's Delivery Service, which are a bit more grounded in reality. Also— to echo others— absolutely no shame in watching the English dub with these movies. Thanks for the awesome content yall ✌️

JessTellsTales

I agree with you for everything but ghibli, they cast really good voice actors in comparison to most shonen in my opinion.

Bonnie Hughes

I'm the opposite, I can't stand watching anything dubbed. Japanese voice actors/actresses convey so much emotions with their voices that I just vastly prefer it. I find dubbed cringy lol. I guess it's what you're used to the most.

Bunnie

Yeah y’all deffo need to do Ghibli movies in dubbed not subbed. Those who recommended this should have specified. Also wanna note that since you guys are watching AOT rn also, by comparison, Spirited Away will feel slow and more or a family friendly coming of age story of a girl starting off fearful and becoming ready to handle what life is about to throw at her (adult life, working, dealing with toxicity, avoiding being manipulated, losing yourself etc). AOT is like BANG, action and information. This is more in the light easy watching realm of anime, plus it’s over 2 decades old. This film was a huge stepping stone in making anime and Japanese story telling more mainstream in the west. This walked so that shows like Last Airbender could run. It’s an OG. Now plenty of incredible anime have come afterwards. For me personally, I was 3 when this movie came out and I grew up watching it regularly. This movie made me open to then watching Last Airbender, which lead into shows like One Piece and Seven Deadly Sins. Then AOT felt like a natural progression. My taste in anime matured as I did and I don’t think I would have been open at all to the world of anime if I hadn’t grown up watching the Ghibli movies. They expanded my imagination and exposed me to an alternative media form I wouldn’t otherwise have come across really in the western world. Basically Anime fans my age were likely ghibli watchers as children :)

Talia-Brodie Francis

Agreed!

Talia-Brodie Francis

Agreed. I gave Spirited Away a chance both subbed and dubbed and dubbed was way better IMO.

pcdeltalink036

Oh god, here we go again. RIP the comment section 😅

I just wanted to say it's okay not to enjoy this movie. But to give you more info, the movie is like a coming of age. Like her wonder in Japanese society, Chihiro is lost in the spirit world. If you know about Japanese culture you will understand many things here. The No Face represents most Japanese people who wear masks to each other and do not reveal their true selves, they do everything to please others. Also, the river spirit has a lot of junk/trash from people who throw it into the river. Also, working for Yubaba is like working in a Japanese company; you must devote your life (forget who you are) there. You can see Chihiro grow up and be more confident in herself. At first, she is terrified of anything, like the stairs. But after that, she is more brave and not afraid of anything. I hope this makes sense and makes you like this movie more! Can't wait to see your reaction to other anime/animation. I recommend Your Name!

Niler Wuthichaikul

welcome to the beautiful mind of hayao miyazaki. (english dubbed versions are just as good for these ones)

sai

You have taste redline is a fever dream put to pen

Gregory Sambrano

I prefer subbed over dubbed anytime… except with Ghibli movies… defs for app to.

Harlee

“A silent voice” is spectacular. Highly recommended adding it to your list.

Harlee

I recommend Redline (2009), the original rated R version is on aniwave.to, based on your reactions I think you'd enjoy action anime better. I personally enjoyed Redline more than Spirited Away. It won best animated picture at Fantasia Festival and the studio that made this movie went bankrupt from spending so much time and money on it

Surya

Next one will be a dub. 🤙

Badd Medicine

watching dubbed is super important for these movies!!

oryanz

Please if you do Howl's Moving Castle, watch it dubbed! You may recognize some of the voices!

BugBite23

💯 agree! Howls Moving Castle dubbed is absolutely great!

BugBite23

Anime fans are the sanest, most understanding group of people ever so I don’t think they will have issues with the comment section

Alanna Banana 🍌

I definitely think the fact you guys watched it in Japanese added to the confusion. I always connected with the characters more in the dubbed version. Please watch “howls moving castle” (dubbed) it’s still very fantastical but I find it more grounded than spirited away. If you want something much more grounded then “princess mononoke” is brilliant, often the favourite of many ghibli movie fans. “Ponyo” is also just super fun and cute.

Bonnie Hughes

Im sorry if it offended anyone but I think 50:44 is hilarious 😂🤣

Alyssa Dyson

anime fans are so chill, no worries

Butthats

Spirited Away was little overrated to me as well. Don't get me wrong, it looks pretty for its time, has nice soundtrack and etc but it's definitely not the best anime movie and shouldn't be ranked as high as it is on certain websites. Idk why people recommended "Spirited Away" to reactors who just got started with Anime, it was a BIG mistake. If it had to be Ghibli "My Neighbor Totoro" would be way better choice to get started. I wouldn't recommend any Ghibli movie to beginner tho, something like "Your Name" or "A silent voice" would be way easier to understand and enjoy. Also, seems like some people forget that those guys here are human beings as well, sometimes we all feel disappointed, frustrated and we express it in our own way. It's impossible for every movie to just click for them just because it's popular. Just because I love certain Anime doesn't mean they have to love it, that's why I respect those guys as they don't sell fake reactions. I always appreciate honesty.

Reactbina

😂 yeahhh, I did say I “hope” but I’m expecting the opposite lmao

Joe

Wdym youtube comment sections are always respectful and chill

slavicandsapphic

I'm 100% sure that will be what happens, for sure. No way they could be anything else.

Jeff K

I do hope the eventual YouTube comments on this will be cordial and respectful. lol
