I understand, but what I’m wondering given the political climate at that time and the tension between nations, would there have been any underlying meaning to their statement. The Portuguese would have been in contact with Japan for nearly 60 years by 1600, so I’m sure there would have been advancements made. However, they don’t expect the canons to be accurate since the Portuguese already showed them before. Given the viewpoint of this story, was that all just in order to place John in a valuable light or were they implying that the Portuguese didn’t show them how accurate they were on purpose, because who shows their entire hand to a potential enemy nation. Since it’s an adaptation of historical fiction, it could just be thrown in for plot and nothing more, that’s all I was wondering.

I mean, an artillery piece today can be very differently effective if it is a few decades out of date. We really know how artillery works, but a German PzH2000 works a lot better than a Soviet Giatsint 2S5. And those are barely a few years apart from each other. And they have an actual war to prove it. Back in the day, it really wouldn't have been any different. New cannons would be as interesting as modern jets or modern artillery. Extremely interesting from a military stand-point, but no one would be flabberghasted by it.

I found it interesting that they commented about the fact that the Portuguese showed them that cannons weren't accurate back in the day. Does that mean they actually weren't as accurate back then when they first showed them, or that they (Portuguese) weren't as well versed in their use (doubtful, I feel they would know a whole lot), OR that they were just faking in order to keep the Japanese from turning the cannons against them? I'd be interested to know the history behind that, just as a little tidbit for myself. I also found the concept of the eight-fold fence to be really interesting. It makes me wonder about a lot of the other scenes in the series so far. There are moments when it seems like a masterclass in acting... to be so subtle yet show just enough. Really great.

Natto are fermented soy beans, they are quite tasty once you get used to the texture

This is a fantastic show, yall are not going to be able to guess any of the twists and turns the show takes and its gonna be amazing!

The sticky stuff on Natto is polyglutamic acid which is formed when the soybeans are fermented so you can imagine it's pretty stinky. No one recognize the actor playing Yabushige? Big hint: Thor

Helping you along here 😉 'Natto' is the food they were eating and it's actually fermented soybeans. It is an acquired taste like many fermented products, but particularly because it has that sticky, slimy texture. As for Kiku - she is a courtesan and not married to anyone. Courtesans were viewed as lower class in such societies, but they could often be used quite cleverly by people in power to 'disarm' enemies or at least get them to drop their defenses when they confuse lust for love or underestimate just how much courtesans hear while providing their services. Spying and scheming was common. Their bodies were also used to barter loyalties or sway opinions. In fact, here you see Omi (Yabishige's nephew) say he loves Kiku...and it's pretty easy for her to butter him up so he feels confident in his ambition to get ahead...which is why he tricks Toranaga's son Nagakado while also getting further in Yabushige's good graces. The idea is that by doing so, he is a useful subject to his uncle in their plan to side with Ishido, but he also technically isn't directly at fault for Nagakado's actions if Toranaga brings his wrath down on his son for his barbaric actions. In some ways you could say that Omi is as two-faced as Yabushige, but less blatant about it as he's still just a small pawn in this whole game of 4D chess. 😉
