EARLY ACCESS: Dune 2 FULL REACTION

LINK: Dune Part 2

What can we say about this film? The film's visual style is phenomenal, characterized by remarkable attention to detail that surpasses its predecessor. From the intricate veils of the Bene Gesserit to the masked bodyguards in Feyd-Rautha's arena, every aspect of costume and set design is meticulously crafted. This level of dedication helps elevate the film in our opinion.

Dare we say Denis Villeneuve best film yet? The film's visual presentation is truly stunning. While the sheer scale of the production can be overwhelming at times, every aspect is meticulously crafted. Arrakis feels remarkably authentic, offering a deeper exploration of its landscape and atmosphere in this installment. If you watched this in the theater, how was the experience?

A big shoutout to the cast for their outstanding performances! Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem return to their roles from the first film, while Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, and Souheila Yacoub join the ensemble cast. Just a stacked cast! Every single one of them delivers a stellar performance, hitting it out of the park.

If you haven't seen this film yet, we highly recommend seeing it! Bring on Dune 3!

It definitely is on the list 🤘

Badd Medicine

No country for old men should be on the list then

If you like Rebecca Ferguson try out The White Queen

Jeffrey LaClair

Nah. Cry about it

Marco Gutierrez

Grow up homie, your critiques are valid simply because it’s okay to have WRONG opinions, but other than that, every change made, made sense for the movie. It’s a cinematic masterpiece in every aspect. Deal with it. Stop bitching and go watch something else lmfao

The extra tors don't have shields, The chopper was its cover. You take the chopper out so that it doesn't expose the location. Once it's destroyed you can hit the extractor with the laser

There is going to be a spin off TV series called Dune Prophecy on HBO Max.

Kevin Austin Webb

Or learn how to set aside your own biases and make something neutral instead of turning everything you do into a political statement. I know it's a hard concept for some people because all they *are* at political puppets, but I have faith that there's still a spark of humanity in them anyway.

Marco Gutierrez

Every single thing that any person ever does or creates is influenced by the society and context in which we grew up and were raised. Take a human development and sociology class. Or just develop some critical thinking skills. Jesus.

Jenna

The context of society doesn't matter one whit. The book isn't talking about American society in the 60s, the book is about a futuristic feudal society that centers around a psychoactive drug that imparts mystical powers on people depending on how it's used. This is the problem with looking at things from a modern lens. Not every single freaking thing has to be a commentary on society, sometimes a story is just a story and that's it. Herbert wasn't taking his cues from society when he wrote this, because we don't live in a feudal system with ruling families that operate entire planets overseen by a central house that's been in power for millenia. We don't have families going to war with each other, a guild that controls all travel and commerce, a female only sisterhood of "witches", and another guild of genetic flesh molders all vying for control of a central throne. I can barely begin to think about a societal structure that's *less* like ours than the universe of Dune, so why on earth would I ever consider that into the equation? The entire *point* of science fiction and fantasy is to take us to an entirely different place that has nothing to do with the real world, so why are we constantly injecting the real world into these places where it doesn't belong? DV clearly *didn't* tell this story correctly because we have people like you who have never read it and are coming away from it thinking that it needs to be changed to reflect our modern society.

Marco Gutierrez

If you’ve watched other DV work, you might know what to expect with a production of his. While I know Dune is a dense story, with a lot of information and material, it seems to me like DV has tried to make it a movie that both book readers and new fans would enjoy. While many love the Dune books, I know plenty who claim it can be very hard read, one that you have to really dedicate yourself to to get through. DV has created a cinematic masterpiece. Where you see “fluff”, most others see award-winning directing and cinematography that tells just as much story as the dialogue. DV has opened many people’s eyes to this type of sci-fi with his movie. Honestly, I’ve grown up seeing and watching Star Wars my whole life, and I have never been a fan of it. I have a hunch that if this “fluff” was taken out of Dune, it believe it would feel much more like Star Wars, which I don’t mean kindly. And if you think this movie has an “evil-modern-leftist” agenda that the book didn’t have, I recommend that you (1) read the books again, and (2) consider the context in which the book was written—which would be: by a white man in the 60’s, when society was still segregated and women still couldn’t open their own fucking bank accounts.

Jenna

Both things can be true at once though. Yes, I find the film to push an evil modern leftist agenda that I am fervently against, but I also disagree with these changes as a book reader. I'm *sick* of people changing things that they don't understand just because they personally don't like it. If nothing else, the people in charge of this movie were the ones that had a problem with any ideology, not me. I get the notion of "oh that wouldn't work on screen", except the issue is that it *does*. The Sy-Fy channel made a Dune miniseries that covered the book back in 2000, and that miniseries covered *more* of the book and didn't exclude crucial details to the story like Denis Villeneuve did. DV had almost an entire *hour* more of runtime than the Sy-Fy miniseries, and yet he covers even less. The reason for this is because he wastes so much time with pointless extended scenery shots and close-ups of people's faces. In a story that's so dense with information, why on earth would you waste that much time on shots that provide none of the information? I'm resolved to watching both movies again with video editing software and cutting out all of the excess scenery and close-ups and stuff and seeing how long the movie actually is. My guess? There's probably 2 hours of frivolous fluff between both movies. Fact of the matter is if you went and read the book now, it would read like a completely different story. That should never be happening with an adaptation.

Marco Gutierrez

As an avid book lover, I can understand being upset at changes. I haven't read Dune, but I've done a bit of digging since watching it, as I was curious about the lore and also the reader's perspective. Naturally, some people do not love the changes. Contrastingly, I have seen MANY book fans say they understand why the changes were made and are okay with the changes, as the movies are done so well. Many book authors over the years have spoken about how some things are just simply harder to translate to the screen, and sometimes certain changes make the movie experience better portray some details that might not come out as easily from the source material. It seems to me like you might be more upset about perceived "agenda pushing", which I assume is a perceived agenda that goes against your own. If that's the reason you dislike a movie, that's fine of course. We all can enjoy or dislike whatever media we want. But your personal feelings about supposed "political views" being pushed that you don't like do not make a movie a bad adaptation or a bad movie in general. I'm saying all of this to provide an outside perspective. You can not like the movie for your own reasons. Doesn't make the movie or the changes bad. Just say it like it is.

Jenna

Yes! Rewatching these movies has just made them better and better for me. I truly spot something new each time I watch. Amazing

Jenna

So. Fucking. Epic. What else do you even say???

Jenna

yikes lol

David Whitehouse

What are you talking about? Sure there are things missing/changed, but overall this adaption is very well done.

samuel Jakob

I thought the same!!! like if he didn't say it fast, it may not happen or something xD just in case

Alexiani Gollarza

Stilagar’s immediate “LISAN AL-GAIN” was comedic timing LOL this movie has so much humor in it

Hyperaware

If you rewatch Dune: Part One, you see where Paul’s visions aren’t exactly accurate, and they become different in this one based on his choices. These movies have so much replay value

Hyperaware

Paul used the atomics to destroy the mountain protecting the Emperors base, so the Worms can pass through hiding in the protection of the storms.

Hyperaware

I watched this on IMAX and highly recommend it. Dune part 3: Messiah has been confirmed and yes, Denis Villeneuve doesn't want to rush it, which is great.

Arudorin

It’s not a real prophecy when its just a whole other culture and civilization creating the prophecy for generations just for the benefit of them gaining power over other Great Houses. Paul didn’t want to be the next oppressors of the Fremen, but his own lust for revenge diverged his path. Thats why his visions arent always true until this Second Part where he continues down the dark path. Denis wanted to carry on Frank Herbert’s warning of looking up to Messianic figures and false prophets, because they mostly just want power for themselves and their own bloodline. The prophecy they believe in is Bene Gesserit propaganda.

Hyperaware

After Sietch Tabr is shelled by the Harkonnens and a war council is called in the south to discuss how the Fremen will respond, Paul is terrified of going after experiencing more glimpses of the impending future. His visions are incomplete and fleeting, but all seemingly show the universe descending into a bloody civil war with Paul at the center of it all. He knows that this future will become inevitable if he follows his mother south. Paul desperately attempts to explain to his allies why he can't go south and steps away to compose himself as he is haunted by memories of Jamis and further glimpses of what lies ahead. Chani then comes over to comfort Paul and inadvertently says the cruelest thing possible to him. "If I go south I might lose you." "You will never lose me! Paul Atreides. Not as long as you stay who you are." Paul looks at Chani sadly as he knows he will be a different person after drinking the Water of Life. "I will cross the storms with you. Go south. Bring your people to safety." "And then I will do what must be done."

vik56

Is that why he has almost an entire hour of screen time *more* than the Sy-Fy miniseries had, yet shows even less than it did? Hell, DV's Dune covered even less of the story and made even more changes than Lynch's version did. He literally could have copied the Sy-Fy channel frame for frame and *still* had an extra 55 minutes to cover even more story or provide more information for general audiences. If he had done that, then it would have been the best adaptation ever. Instead, he made all of these changes because he *actually does* want to make it his way. Frank Herbert wasn't happy with the message people were taking away from Dune, so he wrote Dune Messiah. *That* was the fix, not changing Chani's character and thoughts to conveniently reflect a modern agenda. DV can claim he's a fan of Dune all he wants, but I judge a tree by it's fruit and his is rotten. The showrunners for the Witcher made the same claims of being fans of the source material, right before they butchered it and changed it to fit their political views.

Marco Gutierrez

They could have created an entirely new character to suit that purpose instead of butchering an existing character. Next excuse?

Marco Gutierrez

Loved your reaction guys!! this movie is so epic. 💜

Alyssa Dyson

When Paul says "Lead them to paradise" he means "Kill them all." He's telling the Fremen to slaughter any of the Great Houses who refuse to swear fealty to him as Emperor. Paul commands his fanatical legions of Fedaykin to start a war that he knows will cause the deaths of billions. He's seen it. Paul does this because no matter how hard he looks, there is only one narrow path through for his family to survive the coming storm. And on the scene where Chani slaps Paul, it's not just the classic Hollywood "How dare you put me through that!". It's mainly about Paul breaking his promise to Chani not to utilize the Bene Geserit propaganda to fulfill the Fremen prophecy of the coming of the Lisan al Gaib, "The Voice from the Outer World". By drinking the Water of Life and being brought back from the dead after receiving the tears of Desert Spring, Paul has solidified his place as the Fremen messiah and started a chain of events that will lead to a Holy War. Another of my favorite things to watch in this movie is the different ways that fanatical belief and worship can develop across cultures. For Stilgar, we observe his steady progression towards becoming one of Paul's most devout followers as he transitions from a grudging respect to fanatical worship. By contrast, we see Gurney scoff at the Fremen's belief in Paul as the Messiah. He only sees the Fremen's belief in Paul as a weapon to be wielded against the Harkonen. But then we see Gurney's face as he watches Paul put on his father's ducal signet, proclaiming himself as Duke of Arakkis. On his face we then see the same fanatical devotion we saw on Stilgar's. A more traditional kind of worship but just as fanatical. From the first movie when Paul has one of his first glimpses of the future: "It's coming...I see a Holy War spreading across the universe like unquenchable fire...a warrior religion that waves the Atreides banner in my father's name! Fanatical legions worshiping at the shrine of my father's skull!! A war in my name!! Everyone's shouting my name!!!" Amazing movies.

Since you guys love Rebecca Ferguson, I was wondering if you’ve seen the show Silo? If not, it would be awesome if you could react to it!

Lauren

The best movie of the 21st century so far. Guys, go to IMAX immediately!

ROKU

I’m surprised you guys didn’t speak to the actual real world parallels portrayed in the movie.

MJ Eid

I'm so glad you guys loved this movie as much as I did. It's so amazing. It has turned me into a Dune head and timothee chalamet fan girl. He is definitely the actor of his generation. I would love to see you guys react to his other movies Bones and All & Little Women. He gives a great performance in both. And Dune Part 2 is actually still being shown in IMAX theaters. They extended it because its doing so well. Yall should go watch it. It's even better on iMAX.

Dana Sow

I think Chani's change made perfect sense. Denis explained it really well. Frank Herbert himself was upset that not enough people understood the message of the first book so Denis changed part of one character, which both fits in and makes sense within the story and helps to audience to get the bigger message easier. Plus it gave that character more screen presence and depth. He has loved dune since he was a child and has wanted to make it into a movie since he first read it, no part about him or his work screams "I wanna make it my way" hes been very clear about trying to be as faithful to frank as he can while making it a good viewing experience, and he succeeded in both

John

Was waiting for this Gonna watch part 1 then watch part 2 with you guys

Lock_Down

As someone who read the books I’m quite satisfied

Maxwell McCool

Denis stated that Chani was changed because they wanted a good stand-in for the audience due to the sheer number of people who missed the message of the original book, not because of some agenda. Just watch a few of the other reactions on YouTube and you'll get why that was 100% needed for general audiences.

Jshk123

Honestly one of the best sci-fi movie I've ever seen. I watched it several times, once in IMAX (amazing experience), and bought the digital copies of both parts as soon as they came out. Just something about the story telling, character portrayals, and incredible cinematography that still manages to take hold of me with every rewatch. The acting is just phenomenal across the board. Timothee as Paul can lead me to paradise any day.

Toan Toan

The only reason I can forgive the Stilgar change is because he became a meme, but that's sad to me. It's the one small redeeming factor of that change, though. The thing is, I could forgive the Chani change if it wasn't surrounded by everything else. To me, this just keeps reeking of the terrible excuse for writing that's been occurring over the last decade. These people aren't being hired because they're good writers, they're being hired because they're political agents that align with the studio's political views. The changes exist purely because these "writers" want to take something that someone better than them created, and change it to fit their image. "Here's how *I* would have written Dune" is what this screams to me. Nevermind the fact that they didn't write Dune and that Frank Herbert did. I'm pretty sure he knows best where his creation is concerned.

Marco Gutierrez

Fair points. Stilgar being a walking meme was annoying to see. At first I also hated the change to Chani, but by the end of the movie I get why they did it to show Herbert's concept of following charismatic leaders. The removal of Paul's first son made no sense because his son was a major character development plot for Paul, as well as a story plot. I guess they removed Alia because an intelligent toddler would be awkward to make on screen.

BlindGoggles

9/10 📈 just add the revenant as a side movie 😁

MateoP

Changing Chani's character rubbed me the wrong way, same with changing Stilgar to just be comic relief. I also don't like how they changed the profile of the Fremen, making it so that the southern religious Fremen are stupid and foolish while the northern atheist Fremen are the ones that are supposedly enlightened. I also absolutely *hate* the removal of any mention of the Spacing Guild. They're such an oppressive, omni-present force across the universe but I'm pretty sure they're never even mentioned once, let alone the massive role that they play in the politics of the Imperium. Oh, also I hate how the Harkonnen were just reduced to easy to kill minions by the end, and the removal of Alia and Paul's first son too. Honestly I just don't like *any* of the changes. There's no reason for any of them.

Marco Gutierrez

I'm curious what your biggest complaints are. I've read the first two books and love this adaption. Besides cutting some characters from the book, which I don't mind. I hate that there's no mention of CHOAM whatsoever. What do you dislike?

BlindGoggles

As others have said, it was a pretty cool theater experience. I despise the movie with a passion for how terrible it is as an adaptation because it rivals The Last Airbender in terms of inaccuracy, but it's pretty to look at and the bass is nice. That's about all I can say about DV's Dune as a whole.

Marco Gutierrez

I happy that Denis Villeneuve won't be able to poison the well any further beyond the damage he's already done.

Marco Gutierrez

Strongly recommend you guys go see this on the biggest IMAX screen you can!

Flubbedsquid

This was an incredible experience in cinema Can't wait to watch it again with you
