I know it´s late(just got around to watch the series :P) but if I am not mistaken the weapon you described (the staff with a blade at the end) is a Naginata. It´s the weapon Mariko used during the ambush. The few female Samurai for example used a Naginata due to it´s extended range balancing out the usually shorter range women´s arms had. :)

Also, it may be more appropriate to refer to Mariko but that name as 'Toda' is a surname and it is taken from her husband 'Toda Hirokatsu' (known as Buntaro). It also means, Hiromatsu and Mariko's son all share 'Toda' as their surname. Also 'Yoshii' is Toranaga's surname, so also shared with his son, Nagakado.
