Sure, let’s be pedantic: the vast majority of anime only watchers saw the show and didn’t skip the OPs. And the people who had a problem with “spoilers” were in the minority. The BM crew have even said watching the OP without context isn’t a spoiler for them. So speaking for myself, and BM speaking for themselves, it’s not the big deal that the small minority of people are insisting it is.

No spoilers here, but I think this explanation is necessary. The basement is in Eren's house in the Shiganshina distric next to wall Maria (first wall), which is titan territory since the first episode. The colossal and armoured titan breached it and the holes haven't been closed since. The hole Eren closed with the big rock was in wall Rose (second wall). So you see, they would have to travel very far in titan territory to reach that basement. They can't just go there without a plan. That's why they are trying to come up with a plan to close the hole made by the colossal titan first. Besides, there are plenty of things happening - the attack on wall Rose, Eren not understanding his power yet, the female titan trying to abduct him, now the beast titan... They can't just leave everything and go into titan territory for miles just to see what's in that basement. Ofc it is frustrating for us as an audience because we want answers😫, but it makes sense why they haven't gone to the basement yet. 🙂

Something I really like about the portrayal of the scouts is the utter lack of information and the sheer desperation by the military. If you remember, there was a guy in Season One during the Battle of Trost. He was a.... some sort of leadership position, he had brown hair and bags under his eyes and was the one that was screaming at his troops and even tried to fire a mortar shell at Eren because he couldn't prove that he was human. Rather than leading through charisma or bravado, this guy was straight up terrifying his troops, threatening any who disobeyed with execution and threatening and screaming at anyone who didn't get the memo, which is an amazing piece of worldbuilding. The people in charge of the military need to maintain order. Pixis even says in S1 that humanity probably won't be killed by titans, because if they lose any more territory they'll fall to civil war and hysteria first. The military needs to maintain order as much as possible, and that means even an idiot is useful as long as he can make people fall in line. And fear is a valid way to get people to obey orders, even if it's not the best way. Basically, things are rough, and I love this show's portrayal of its military. My father was a marine before he passed, and seeing stuff like this with generals and troops and wars makes me feel closer to him. Amazing show. Excited to see you guys watch more.

NO SPOILERS In S1, Grisha Yaeger (Eren's Dad) was alive. He had gone to the capital on business for work, promising Eren he would show him the basement when he came back. Importantly, he took his key with him. When the titans attacked Shiganshina, Grisha was supposedly on his way back. Eren's hometown of Shiganshina was located in a pocket in the outer wall, Wall Maria, that extended past the wall itself; Still the same height, basically using human presence to draw titans to a smaller area as opposed to all along the entirety of the outer wall. When the Colossal Titan broke through the wall, he only allowed Titans into Shiganshina. When the Armored Titan broke through the next wall, he allowed titans into the outer wall, thereby filling one third of humanity's territory with titans. When Hannes rescued Eren, Armin and Mikasa, he took them within Wall Rose to a shelter. Eren had a strange dream about his father. He woke up and ever since he has had his father's key without knowing why. TLDR: Grisha's whereabouts are unknown. Nothing makes sense. Eren has his key for some reason.

For them there are so many things tossing their knowledge of the world upside down with very little answers. Because to be honest, it’s not worth that single moment. People want them to get to the meat of the show faster and sacrificing a week of content for an OVA that doesn’t add much to the story is not worth it to most people. Personally, I didn’t see the Ilse’s Notebook OVA until after season 2, and I straight up felt like it would’ve detracted from my experience watching it early in the season.

Hey guys, just for sharing information, Attack on Titan doesn't really have any filler episodes that can be considered as such. There are a total of 6 episodes throughout the show that are canon mixed fillers; however, you should know that these "filler" additions were actually made by the manga creator himself (Hajime Isayama) and only add to the story. These mixed canon/filler episodes are as follows: •Episode 22 (Season 1, Episode 22) •Episode 33 (Season 2, Episode 8) • and finally, Episodes 38-41 (Season 3, Episodes 1-4). Also, sorry guys for this wall of text 🤣 but I genuinely love your reactions and I'm really looking forward to the next ones; I simply wanted to share some useful information to help you guys enjoy this masterpiece of a show without misunderstandings regarding these less action-packed episodes. In a show like this, you can say that these information episodes are almost more important than fighting against big giant dudes 🤣

Regarding Diamond Dave's question on Grisha Jaeger and whether he was still alive in season 1, here's what we know: in episode 1 of season 1, we see him showing Eren the key to the basement, which he then takes with him on his trip to the inner walls. Then Wall Maria is breached, Carla dies, and Eren flees with Mikasa, Armin and Armin's grandad to Wall Rose. Halfway through episode 2, we see Grisha on a wagon, hurrying somewhere and saying, "Eren, Carla, Mikasa, please be safe." In the next scene, we see Eren's dream about Grisha injecting him with something, which is confirmed as being a memory later in episodes 9/10. Upon waking from that "dream" in episode 2, Eren finds the basement key hanging from his neck. It is reasonable to assume, therefore, that Grisha met Eren after Wall Maria's fall, and gave him the key as well as that injection. What happened to him after that, and where he currently is, are still not known. It's really hard to answer this without spoiling anything! 😥 If anything's coming across as spoilery, please delete. 🙏🏼

The only thing I can tell about Eren’s dad is that the last time he is shown on the show was that time in season 1 when he is injecting to Eren that serum, so we technically didn’t know if he was still alive or not 🤷🏻‍♀️ who knows

So the main reason you get recaps in season 1 and parts of season 2 a lot before the intro is because in Anime, "seasons" follow arcs and some arcs are shorter than others sometimes they combine arcs to make seasons longer. During 2017 AoT was gearing up to some important points in the Manga so they were filling screen time with recaps to extend the seasons a bit and what they animated per episode without making filler episodes or filler content that wasn't part of the manga.
