EARLY ACCESS: Poor Things FULL REACTION

LINK: Poor Things Reaction

This film was very..... interesting. It’s a journey some may not expect. The film explores many aspects of the human experience, from love and lust to compassion and the desire to change the world. The pig-chicken hybrid was a surprising touch and some other creatures too.

Emma Stone was outstanding, and the supporting cast was impressive. The use of colors was intriguing, and while the cinematography was exceptional, interesting use of the fish eye lens for some scenes and the radial blur were perhaps overused. The set design was top-notch, adding a sense of its own story to the film.

Some story elements may have been a bit excessive, with certain scenes feeling unnecessary. This film seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it experience. We’re very curious to see your thoughts on it.

I finally got around to watching this, definitely a creative movie both in terms in story and visuals (set designs, costumes, cinematography), and it has food for thought. I like how it questions the norms. That being said, I agree that some elements felt gratuitous, and overall I feel like the movie is creative but not as smart as it thinks it is. My rating: 4 out of 5 🙂

Thanks for letting me watch this with fresh eyes (and not goat eyes or duck eyes.)

The dance scene is something I watch when I need to feel happy and odd. 😬

Susan B

Yes, a feminist manifesto in candy form. Remarkable performances

As a woman, I think this film was just incredible. I am so grateful stories like this are being told.

Julia Maia

Whoooosh.

I absolutely loved this movie. But I get its not for everyone. But I appreciate you guys watching it. And I'm glad Oak liked it. Hopefully we'll be getting Dune part 2 next week *fingers crossed*

Yes! It's worth reading. The film is great, a 9/10 to me, but there's a lot that got changed/left out, you'll definitely get something new out of reading the book too. It's a very Scottish book; my one real disappointment with the film is how they didn't really keep the book's Scottishness.

What do you mean 'smuggle' their political agenda in with the socialist thing? The whole film is overtly political, no smuggling necessary. It's full of explorations of class, gender, consent, the roles of science and religion, and more. It's definitely first and foremost a commentary on exploitation of women by men, but there's a lot going on beyond that. The film actually significantly reduced the amount of time Bella spent involved in the socialist movement, it's more central in the book. The book was written by a Scottish socialist who spent his life fighting for Scotland's independence from the UK.

As a woman, I love this movie. How it showed the constant exploitation of women and women finding their autonomy in life. The acting, cinematography, set, and costumes design are delightful. The only gripe I had on it is the overindulgence of nudity but I can see why they did it that way. & with Emma being a producer I’m sure she got a hand on what needs to be done. And though I love it, there’s something to think about a man directing a feminist film like this…

kassi

this is movie is literally the complete dissection of the movie trope “born sexy yesterday” wherein women who are out of this world are often depicted acting child-like and needing a man to “survive”, the whole idea of Bella Baxter being the way she is in this movie is to challenge that specific trope in movies & and in real life. Regarding the child abuse youre talking about you must have forgotten The Important Detail they discussed in the film about how fast Bella’s Brain is in aging. Her hair getting long is used to represent how fast she is growing mentally. So no, your argument doesn’t count.

kassi

from what i have read the book actually is much more weird than the movie

Vasileios Mitsos

yikes haha

Can't give this movie anything less than a 8/10 for me. The creativity, set design, and writing was on another level.

blitzman08

I watched it now for the first time with you guys and really enjoyed it. I think it touched on many different subjects and perspectives, loved the acting, costumes, sets, music, found it funny and touching at times. Basically, I agree with Oak's review 😁

squish

I liked this movie a lot. Gets you thinking. As usual, Oak is spot on in the discussion section :D I get why the other guys didn't like it so much, though 🤣 it's a hard sell unless you already like weird stuff

J Knight

I mean it's a metaphor for the constant explotitation of women throughout their life 🤣 there's no non-misogynistic way to show that

J Knight

I absolutely adored this movie and you guys' reaction to it! I don't think I've seen you guys laugh this much in a while! Lol!

joy

it’s fiction.

micah

There is zero point in arguing with someone like her.

you should rethink it i think you did not actually get the correct meaning if the movie its shows Women's autonomy Bella Baxter is a bold symbol of female independence. Her character resists societal expectations, showcasing the strength and determination of women; her resilience challenges established norms, prompting viewers to rethink preconceived ideas. Handling each woman’s life is a decision for each individual woman. The film honestly exposes the harsh criticism that women often face in relation to their sexuality, unlike men. Throughout the film, Bella discovers her body, the need to experiment and the need to have fun. This need becomes a symbol of defiance against societal notions that dictate how women should express their desires. The film highlights a double-standard regime where men are rewarded for their sexual prowess, but women are judged and characterized negatively. At the same time, it addresses the paradox where men encourage a woman’s sexual exploration, but only within the boundaries and terms of their relationship. It highlights women’s diverse aspirations and choices beyond traditional roles.

Where should I even begin to tell what utter mysoginistic AND misandrist rubbish this is!!! It's not enough that women's rights in the real world are under threat right now, no, they have to do this shit show of a movie to denegrade women. Yeaah millions of prostitutes like their job! It's not as if they were forced to sell their bodies to creepy men, no, they just find it a little awkward or smile their pain away! The whole "she actually likes it to be used" thing is a male fantasy that has nothing to do with how it actually works and men KNOW that. But hey it's "art", it's shocking on purpose! Who cares if it's promoting women and child abuse? (The two boys "learning about sex" is child abuse). It's so disgusting. It promotes pedophile sex and insults men by making them whiny wimps whose only interest is it to F.CK a woman that is either disabled or has a BABYS brain. What kind of man would want that? Are people aware, that ESPECIALLY disabled women are abused at an even higher rate as normal women? And in the one scene the brothel owner even SAYS:"She might have a mental illness or something!" And then she grins and expects that creepy bloke to go upstairs with her. 🤮 In addition to that, they had to smuggle their political agenda in it of course and to show her at a "socialist meeting". 🤦🏼‍♀️ It's simply disgusting, Emma Stone and that sick director should have been thrown out, let alone get Oscars for that pile of shit! Only redeeming quality is the costumes and set designs. I hate this garbage with all my heart. 🤬

Patricia

This movie was crazy great!! Like crazy, and great 🤣🤣🤣 and it was a fun 2nd watch with y'all as well. Emma Stone was *muah 💋chef's kiss! Mark Ruffalo was frickin hilarious and really gets a chance to shine in this film. It deserved every Oscar it snagged up.... I mean, those painted skyscapes alone made this movie SO DAMN BEAUTIFUL to look at. 🥰🥰

Roxanne LIL CRIP Kemmerer

Eh, it was alright, but not something I want to watch twice.

Butthats

This movie is Saltburn level of disturbing and insane😂

Esteban

I thought this movie was basically every college theatre project I've ever seen mashed together and given some cameras and a little budget. If you'd asked me beforehand if it was possible to make a movie with this much Emma Stone nudity that I wouldn't enjoy I would have said no, but somehow they managed it. Aside from Willem Dafoe, just terrible performances, cinematography, screenplay - a huge mess. *Almost* worth watching it again to see the looks on your faces, lol.

Dor

this movie is unhinged, unethical, and a bit disturbing.. i love it!

taylor

Oh it was 😂😂😂😂
