As another person said, the episode is not the same on Disney and Hulu so it gets desynchronized lots of time during the viewing 🥲 Also, another show you guys should watch, in the same vein, is Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix !!

As you already know, this series is based off a novel but they also did do a mini-series on it in 1980 with Richard Chamberlain as John, the pilot. On a personal note, this was my father's absolute favorite book and the series was in his top 5 shows of all time. My dad passed a few years ago, so I knew I would watch this new series to honor him. And like you four, I was hooked in the first episode. I have watched up to episode 8 but will be saving the last two episodes for first time watch with you fellas! I can't wait!

Love that you're watching this series as it is amazing...plus I love me some historical Japanese drama lol As you guys noted, this series is based on a novel. But I also wanted to point out that some of the major characters (mainly the Japanese ones) have real historical counter parts. Their names were changed slightly but for those familiar with Japanese history, can figure who is who. Fair warning though, I wouldn't try to look up these counterparts as you could get spoiled on the overall direction of the show. You guys touched on the violence in this episode and one such example was the poor guy that got his head lopped off...for seemingly nothing but praying for John Blackthorne. The Samurai are often romanticized in pop culture but overlooked is their penchant for cruelty towards those of a lower class, i.e. peasants. So a poor farmer getting killed for inadvertently delaying a Samurai on the road was not unheard of...And I like that the cruelty was not avoided here to somewhat balance out how the Samurai are usually portrayed. DD touched on the scene with the courtesan and the Lord of Izu - Yabushige. Seeing this episode for the second time, it occurred to me that Kiku (the courtesan) had engaged in that show for Yabushige because she had determined that was in his character. Recall that just prior to that, one of Yabushige's retainers was talking with Kiku about how his lord likes to "witness" a person's final moments. I think she gained insight that Yabushige was curious about human nature and so decided to show him a lewd version of human nature. Courtesan's tended to match up with a client's tastes...so that's my theory on that scene. Looking forward to the next one!

Tightly written, well-acted, suspenseful paced with some clever dialogue...I don't think there has been a show quite like it in mainstream television which really delves into such intricate storytelling against a historical backdrop. Can't wait to watch the rest of the season with your input too. I love seeing how in awe you are of what you're seeing and feeling. I wish you would binge it so I can binge on your reactions too! Haha.

Whenever western people speak English to each other or the Japanese its actually Portuguese but for the simplicity they chose to use English instead so the audience can follow along better. Tadanobu Asano who played the lord who fell into the water is also Hogun from the Thor movies. 70 % of the crew who made this show is Japanese who traveled outside Japan for the first time in their life. Hiroyuki is also producing the show so he had his hands full to say the least. The show is based on a book and the book is based on real life history with some changes here and there, lets say 10 % is fiction and 90 % is real.
