EARLY ACCESS: Ender's Game FULL REACTION

Set in a future Earth under threat of invasion from an alien race known as the Formics, the film follows the journey of Ender Wiggin, a young prodigy recruited into the International Fleet's Battle School. As Earth's last hope for survival, Ender undergoes rigorous training, honing his tactical skills in simulated war scenarios under the guidance of Colonel Graff and Major Anderson.
The film does a good job of capturing the intensity of Ender's emotional and intellectual struggles as he grapples with the burden of leadership and the moral implications of his actions. The visual effects and immersive create a thrilling experience.
At the center of the story is Asa Butterfield's compelling portrayal of Ender Wiggin, whose complex character arc explores themes of identity, empathy, and the consequences of violence. Supporting performances from Harrison Ford as Colonel Graff and Viola Davis as Major Anderson add depth to the ensemble cast, while Ben Kingsley's enigmatic turn as Mazer Rackham provides a pivotal emotional resonance to the narrative.
The film prompts viewers to ponder questions about the nature of power, the morality of preemptive strikes, and the blurred lines between heroism and villainy. We are looking forward to your thoughts about this film. What did we miss?

I personally enjoy Valentine and Peter's story during this time. Although I can see why they didn't include it in the movie.

2024-04-05 03:36:10 +0000 UTCI can't remember if I watched this movie in the theater or not but I do remember crying at the end. I have not seen it in a long time and I still like it, a lot. The cinematography, the music, the VFX. And the acting is pretty good. I honestly forgot Viola Davis & Nonso Anozie are in this. I discovered both of them here. I know Viola Davis more from How to Get Away with Murder but she's amazing in everything, one of the best actresses out there. Same from Ben Kingsley. Nonso Anozie is in a tv show called "Zoo". If you haven't watched it, you should. This is Asa Butterfield breakthrough role, he was so young. Definitely a twist on the typical invasion SF plot, I really like it, brilliant storyline. Read the book after watching the movie 10 years. I think it's a good adaptation even tho they cut a lot out of it. Fun Fact: the author did a voice cameo.

2024-03-25 20:20:29 +0000 UTCI first watched the movie, loved it, and then read the books. On my first time revisiting the movie, I had such a hard time adapting to some of the changes. One of the ones that got to me the most was their adaptation of Bean, since he is one of my favorite characters. He went from being a supergenius to just being Ender's supportive friend. Rewatching it now, it was a lot more palatable, but I just got all the audiobooks and will be going through the whole series again. It's crazy that there are still new books coming out, last one I read was the second prequel book about the first invasion right as it came out.

2024-03-23 00:48:37 +0000 UTCI'd recommend reading the book if you enjoyed this story. They obviously need to cut stuff down to fit into a film format and there are just a lot of inner thoughts from Ender that you just don't get to see here. You also get a ton more battle school content and there is an entire army promotion that didn't get mentioned at all in the film between Salamander and when he got command of Dragon. The entire series is fantastic. This next bit is somewhat of a spoiler for the book but since you now know what happens in the movie you might like to know. They don't address this specifically in the film but that "28 days till fleet arrival" is meant to portray when the real fleet arrives within range to be detected by the formics. That's just them basically entering their airspace and they are weeks out from the home planet. The first few weeks of Ender at command school was indeed him running simulations vs Mazer but once the fleet arrived within range of the formics every other "game" he played was real. That's why Ender got berated by Mazer and Graff like you saw in one of the battles prior to the home world scenario. Ender even has a thought to himself in the book about how Mazer completely steps his game up one day and the difficulty of the "simulation" increased. For weeks Ender was commanding real ships without knowing it and it was only revealed to him after he "won the game"

2024-03-20 06:42:09 +0000 UTCThe movie was pretty good, but the book series is something else, especially the story of Bean who is kind of a secondary character in this, but he has a whole 3+ books on him and his story alone. The Ender's Game book series has a looot of books in it. Highly recommend.

2024-03-18 21:57:45 +0000 UTCPersonally, I didn't like this movie when I saw it but the twist on how they "won" made it worth sitting through it. But, I was excited to see you guys react just to see your reaction at that part!

2024-03-18 00:58:06 +0000 UTCThe book explains the formics' mindset more. When they came to earth and were killing a bunch of people, they believed they were only killing mindless worker bees. Once they realized they were killing sentient life forms it was too late. The damage was done, but they had decided to leave humans alone. Also, in the book the formics attack Ender initially, calling him a murderer but chooses to forgive him if he saves their species.

2024-03-17 23:44:54 +0000 UTCWow I can't believe I never gave this movie a shot, the depth behind the story, the easter eggs, the meaning behind consequences for your actions... Like Ender said, it's now winning that count's it is how you win that matters the most.

2024-03-17 13:03:32 +0000 UTCI've re-read this book many times since I first did in '99. It's an amazing story, especially since it's Ender's first person POV. His thought process in the movie was done well enough, but in the book it's even more fascinating. Love the movie just based on the fact that the book is so good. Great reaction!!

2024-03-17 02:55:03 +0000 UTCCard said that he only wrote Enders Game to set up for Speaker for the Dead. The two together are such an amazing story.

2024-03-17 01:34:09 +0000 UTCIn the book, it implies that *none* of the simulation battles at Command School were actually simulations but all real. So each time, they were fighting real Formics and they lost real soldiers. There were many more simulations in the book, with many more losses. It is also explained that when the Formics found Earth, they tried to communicate with humans through telepathy. Because the Formics couldnt hear their thoughts, they thought humans *couldnt* think. Thus, they assumed that humans were a lower life form -- much like we view "ants". They didn't understand humans were complex, thinking creatures until humans fought back when the Formics tried to mine Earth's water. They realized their mistake and tried to recall all their forces, but the humans destroyed their whole fleet. This is why they never attacked again and never intended to either. Ender sees destroying the planet not only as unprovoked, but also as a war crime, and thus vows to right the humans wrongdoing by finding the last Formic queen a new planet to call home.

2024-03-17 01:32:15 +0000 UTCI agree with this estimate - about 75% was left out, and that takes away from the real impact of both parts of the ending - (1) the graduation not being a simulation and (2) Ender realizing the Formics were trying to communicate with him thr whole time and making the decision to find the remaining queen a home as recompense for what was essentially a war crime. The book series has like 16 books in total, but Card said he only wrote Enders Game as a prequel to set up for Speaker for the Dead - which is a whole new level of moral quandary. Aside, Card is a controversial figure in sci fi as he has pretty nasty views. It still blows my mind that someone so hateful wrote a series about empathy towards those different from you who you don't understand.

2024-03-16 10:04:00 +0000 UTCfirstly, this book was absolutely incredible- oak if you're looking for a good audio book, cannot recommend highly enough! in terms of book to movie this one is moderately faithful with maybe 25% of the book being included. rewatching this makes me want to reread it, but i remember seeing the movie and being heartbroken with how much they left out. if you enjoyed the strategy and battle games they play, the book gives you wayyyyyyyy more of that content. you get a lot more foreshadowing through the mind games about the formics, the queen, and how after their first attack on humans they vowed not to attack again once they realized humans are all unique (not worker bees or drones). they didn't understand that humans do not communicate telepathically, which is what they attempt to do with ender in the dreams and game like someone else mentioned, ender kills the first bully and bonzo in their skirmishes, which has always felt like such a gut punch to me. it would've been so easy to have that be a quick conversation between viola davis & harrison ford's characters

2024-03-16 09:36:50 +0000 UTCThis movie was supposed to have a sequel, but it didn't perform well at the box office, so the studio canceled any plans to complete the series.

2024-03-16 09:27:24 +0000 UTCIt's crazy how thematically different this movie is compared to something like Starship Troopers. The book series it's adapted from is even better if you care to read more. Loved your reaction to this.

2024-03-16 04:14:39 +0000 UTCThis movies makes me cry so much at the end after we find out it wasn't actually a game. It's so upsetting to see a species like that be wiped out and especially one that obviously wasn't wanting to fight or harm. The biggest takeaway from it is the aspect of other life out there and how we would understand and react if we ever encountered it. They wiped out a species out of fear. A species that was never aggressive towards humans and then never came back after the humans first attacked them. And instead of building defenses and learning what we could, they chased after them to annihilate them. Like Ender said, genocide. And I find it such a sad thing.

2024-03-16 03:05:03 +0000 UTCI don't remember if the book clarifies, but I do like that the movie keeps it ambiguous as to the nature of all the previous "simulations".

2024-03-16 02:30:17 +0000 UTCyou could tell in the movie they were doing the "we sent your dog to live at a farm" speech with bonzo.

2024-03-15 23:40:40 +0000 UTCI absolutely love this movie. ITs a great depiction of the movie fury. Ideals are peaceful. History is violent. Also how you win a war matters. Now everytime i watch this movie. I cry. because i wonder how many battles weren't a simulation. How many people and aliens died while he was "learning" Aliens that were just mining water.

2024-03-15 23:28:45 +0000 UTCI absolutely love this movie I'm still holding onto hope that one day they'll make a sequel. but Harrison ford has never played a character that got on my nerves soooo bad

2024-03-15 20:07:09 +0000 UTCIn the book, the first bully and Bonzo both passed away due to their injuries. The didn't tell Ender because they didn't want him to know he'd killed them.

2024-03-15 20:00:39 +0000 UTCI love this movie and the books. Its crazy that the books were written in the 80s especially with the technology the author talked about. Btw Ender in the beginning of the book and when he starts battle school he was only 6 or 7 years old.
