EARLY ACCESS: Saltburn FULL REACTION
Added 2024-02-09 19:30:27 +0000 UTC
Lazy, sun-soaked days spent slightly inebriated by the pool seamlessly transition into evenings filled with elegant, booze-infused dinners. Barry Keoghan delivers a profoundly disquieting portrayal in the role of Oliver Quick, a scholarship student at Oxford University. Arriving as a freshman, he gradually assimilates into the popular clique over time.
Rosamund Pike has an uproarious performance as Elspeth, Felix's glamorous mother—a former model with a penchant for melodrama and casual cruelty. Richard E. Grant as Felix's father, Sir James. Alison Oliver embodies the chic yet tragic character of Venetia, Felix's sister, delivering a killer bathtub monologue in the third act that stands out as one of the film's highlights. Carey Mulligan has a supporting role as the family's houseguest, Pamela who is unaware of her overstayed welcome due to her narcissistic tendencies.
The cinematography in Saltburn is remarkable, featuring numerous unique shots and vibrant colors that showcase the skill of the cast and crew. However, despite the visual prowess, the story didn't resonate as strongly as anticipated, with certain parts of the film falling a bit flat. Although there are shocking scenes, their impact is hindered by the overall lack of resonance in the narrative. Nevertheless, if you haven't seen it, we would still recommend giving it a shot for a one-time viewing experience.

I don't think that it's about "eat the rich", because the rich here are the victims, the middle class guy is the villain. And the phrase "eat the rich" is normally said as criticism againt the wealthy. I don't see any serious social message here. To me it's just a campy thriller.

I agree with the audience you think it's for. I've seen female reviewers like it and have found more of a fan fanbase for it on tiktok. As for Parasite, it's one of those movies you have to watch til the end.

Yes! The cinematography was amazing and I agree with the acting, everyone did so well! Yeah the way they did the reveal at the end was a little silly because at the point the audience already figured he had something to do with the deaths, but seeing that it all started with the bike was surprising. I think maybe I've interpreted the ending a bit differently as then others as well. I took it as he was obsessed with dude, but got the house idea after being there. I didn't think it was he wanted the house first and then did all of that, I would understand all the complaints if that was it. But Oliver said he loved and hated the guy, and I think he snapped once dude found out about his family, and he knew he would have to leave that lifestyle. Also as a watcher of Netflix's You, I just ate this up lol.

Bri, I enjoyed this one quite a bit as well! It was beautifully shot, and the acting was *MUAH chef's kiss! Did I do a bit of "Oh God no, no, no, no, no!" for a few scenes...... sure. Was it the grossest thing I've ever seen?...... uhhh no shot! Social media extremism aside, it was a well-made film and I too had a fun time watching (and thoroughly enjoying) where the story went! It could've been a bit less predictable in its "reveal" ending, but even though I had a feeling early on that Oliver was a wack job, I was def caught off guard at the scene where Felix takes him home and finds out about all of Oliver's lies. THAT I wasn't expecting at that time in the film!lolol

Hi just to clear up some confusions, oxfam is a charity that has shops around the uk to raise money for there services, most if not all charity shops represent a precise charity so all there money goes to one cause also most charities are well known in the uk and in some countries because of their work and advertising. So when the guy said got his clothes from oxfam he basically means a charity shop or thrift store. British parties aren’t all like that maybe just the super wealthy can afford to go all out and grieve affects everyone differently so some people just ignore what’s really happening because that way they think it’s not but I wouldn’t call it a British thing.

EDIT: OK I wasn't sure how that would work with syncing up with the movie in another tab, but that was pretty fun! A lot of stuff you guys are reviewing I'm not into, but I still enjoy your reactions. The story is pretty basic - eat the rich. It's just presented in a totally different way that's not for everyone. I love this movie and I would be interested in seeing how the likes and dislikes are distributed by gender. I personally think this film was made for women and gay men, and all the triggered responses I've seen (not you guys, just generally) basically support this. The vampire scene was my favorite. 🧛🏻🩸Lots of high camp here and Rosamund is the Queen! I have seen the comparisons to Parasite, and I remember all the raving about it, but I was so bored, I literally couldn't finish it. Looking forward to another watch along! === Oh boy! Been waiting for this and so glad I chose now to join! 😻

This movie completely relies on too much shock value. Mason was right. This movie is definitely not the best and is lazy. As mentioned it feels like it was made for a one time viewing experience. People who are upset with his opinion must be upset because it hit some truths, though that’s not necessarily a bad thing. A show I think you guys would enjoy that reminds me of SaltBurn a bit is Succession. It is more fleshed out and does the rich family trope excellent.

Hey Guys! I'm a new member from Wales (UK) and have been thoroughly enjoying your content for the past few weeks. I completely agree with your reviews and analysis; I wonder whether, as Oak mentioned, there are Directors like Emerald Fennell (Saltburn) who deliberately write scenes like these based on the viewing culture of people sharing shock with others. You are all 100% correct, though; this movie is purely recommended based on 'what do you think the Badd Medicine guys would think of this!'. That said, being from Wales (we have many Castles and Gothic culture), this film could be categorised as Dark Gothic, as a cultural phenomenon, Gothic culture pertaining to death, demise, loss, and the darker depths of love. Does that mean it's a good film? Absolutely not. I think you're right that the movie conceit is laced with a slow-plodding plot that meanders without formulating its thesis, but again, this is a device used in European Gothic literature. I thought I'd leave this as a final thought from the Director (Emerald Fennell) as food for thought. Fennell argued that Saltburn is about the depths of love and the lengths we go to for it, like killing in the name of love. The scenes specifically addressing this are drinking the bathwater, the 'vampire' scene, and the grave scene, all of which illustrate how when we love someone we love every part of them, there are no gross parts to them, like when we make love we accept every dimension of our loved one, similarly, in the vampire scene he shows how we likes every part of her and accepts all that Venetia is (again I think its weird and not my opinion just an analysis). When she was asked about the grave scene, Emerald noted that when someone we love passes on we just want to be as close to them as possible, to feel them once again, and the dirt scene is meant to illustrate the depths of his love for Felix, for Fennell, it is not shock value but the Gothic storytelling of how dark our minds are, the issue with Gothism is that you have to believe these thoughts to buy into them, and as we all know, not everyone is Gothic in their mind. I think there are some interesting Gothic themes littered through the narrative, but I very much agree that it has been done much better in Parasite; I also think the reveal at the end ruins it and turns it into a 'gotcha' film when it never was that. Deep down, I don't think this film really knew what it wanted to be, so it became a mishmash of Gothism, eat-the-rich, and shock twist, with very little payoff in the end. I hope the next recommendation is better, some mentions I would love to see you watch Scorsese like 'The Departed', 'The Irishman' or his new one 'Killers of the Flower Moon' I'm sure Oak would appreciate the quality of that film, some others are David Fincher (Seven) like 'Zodiac', 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' and 'The Game' (You'll love the game its brilliant), or Adam McKay (The Big Short, Vice and Don't Look Up). My last one would be Wes Anderson, but he's very niche, and I'm not sure it would hit with the audience. I think you'd appreciate the vibrancy and art of his filmmaking; if so, Grand Budapest Hotel is the place to start. Keep up the brilliant work guys! I love the content, and you guys are the best team on YouTube. Take care and stay safe all; Cheers and Diolch (Thanks in Welsh).

Seems my thoughts will be in the minority here, lol I haven't listened to your end review yet but I've been reading the comments here. This was a first time watch for me too and I'd say I enjoyed it. I didn't know much about this movie either, apart from the internet screaming about a bathtub scene lol. Yes I'd say it had 3 shocking scenes, but at the same time I just finished watching The Boys with ya'll, and they push the limits every other episode lol. About an hour in I was like yeah, I'm into it. I feel like it was very character and dialogue driven, and I was interested in the plot about a "nobody" going home to a rich family. Like ya'll I was curious where the movie was going, I didn't think it would turn into what Mason Quinn had guessed about the rich family hunting the poor thing. I actually didn't think it would turn sinister unless he went full Joe Goldberg on his obsession. But I was also waiting to see if the ending would fall off given how everyone's been talking about how bad it is, but it didn't fall off for me. The morning after the party's reveal was the direction I was hoping it would go in. Clearly at this point, dude was giving unhinged stalker and I like how much the movie leaned into that. I know people have said those scenes were just for shock, which sure, I guess, but I think it goes to show just how disturbed the main character actually is. I mean personally, I tend to look into a lot of true crime cases so I'm very aware of how fucked up humans can be. I think the movie was trying to showcase that, after making him seem so harmless in the beginning. I wasn't expecting him to pick off the whole family, but I liked it, it was giving Parasite in that way. The title makes a lot more sense now as well, it's really every fucked up thing he did to get there. Alright I'm gonna finish the review now lol.

Really interesting reaction! I absolutely adored this film, but I do think it tapped into something very British that I imagine makes it awfully strange for others to watch. Watching it in the cinema I was really floored by it. I would say i think people hype it up too much calling it 'traumatising' etc, my friend and I that watched were happy to go along for the ride and found it scandalising and fun! I think the pretty big difference between this and Parasite was also that Olly wasn't poor at all. He was upper middle class, not in the Catton's echelon and not dirt poor as he portrayed himself, just an unextraordinary guy who set his sights on something he'd never get any other way.

The embodiment of 'eat the rich'.
I'm not very much into comparing movies that deal with the same subject matter in the way that you guys compare them. I don't think we stop making these types of movies because "Parasite did it better". By that logic we might as well stop making fantasy movies, cause LOTR already exist lol.

This wasn't a heated reaction involving four people. It's crucial to clarify, as comments might imply otherwise. Yes, 1 was upset and gave his reasons why. Our reviews, such as those for Avatar: The Last Airbender and more recently Now You See Me 2, have some challenging debates & tone regarding the story told in the film. 🤙

I really hope this doesn't turn you guys from the director because I was really hoping you guys would react to Promising Young Woman. Its by the same director and its also with Carey Mulligan but everything she failed to do with Saltburn she actually did great in with Promising Young Woman. i went to see this for jacob elordi. came out in love with emerald’s directing style. thought her vision was beautiful with the cinematography and lighting and set design. the writing does fall flat for me as well. the story is not nearly as good as it could have been which was disappointing. i do hope she continues to direct though. writing?…not so much. although i saw she won an oscar for her screenplay for one of her previous films so maybe this one was just a miss.

I absolutely agree with you guys on the shock value did not need those scenes I personally really enjoyed the first hour or so very much but then I feel like it just rushed to the finish line and exposed its hand could have been a great film handled differently I do believe the so called shocking scenes were just there to shock and were not needed. You guys mentioned parasite has much more in common with The talented Mr Ripley in my opinion. So I recommend that film if you guys haven't seen it please do it will not disappoint.

I think in the end it's about whether or not it's important for you to have consistent plot progression and a solid plot as a whole. Believe or not there are people who find this less important and can watch a movie as an experience and for the atmosphere. If your open to that you can really get sucked into this movie. But it's a lot more depended on personal taste.
I personally think you can really dislike a movie and be honest about that in a review but stay a little tiny bit respectful. Straight out calling it trash goes to far. I always liked Mason Quinn but after this I don't know if I can watch future reactions the same way. It was so aggressive and a bit arrogant as well. You can't give credit to cast and crew and then burn the writers completely to the ground. They've put hard work in it as well. Would I give this movie a really high score? No. Did I like parasite better? Yes. But labeling it trash? That's not reasonable.

I think I know why it's so popular. Seems to be mostly women going crazy about it. They just like seeing Barry naked and the weird shock value scenes hahahaha. I prefer American Psycho over this. There's so many plot holes so I'm going to assume the whole film was a dream or delusion or something like that. Also I got excited seeing Reece Shearsmith as the professor and then he was gone. I knew the film was going to get weird, so I was thinking of it as a longer Inside No. 9. Pretty disappointing
