It acknowledges that it takes liberties for the sake of drama, but everything it does is based on real life events. Once you've seen all 5 episodes, you have been hit with all the important facts and human drama, even if it had to rework some things for TV.

Pripyat is the town that is now considered "Chernobyl." Minsk is about 250 miles away, where the institute is. And, although it is dramatized, the evacuation was very abrupt and nobody had any indication that they wouldn't return after the situation was quelled

Also for the radiation readings, they said 8 milliroentgen at the start of the episode in Minsk, while last episode the readings at Chernobyl were 3.6 roentgen, not milli
