EARLY ACCESS: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory FULL REACTION
Added 2024-01-19 20:41:39 +0000 UTCStepping into the whimsical world of Willy Wonka, Johnny Depp imbues the character with a peculiar charm and an air of mystery, offering a unique and darker perspective. Depp's portrayal adds freshness to the iconic character, with the chemistry between Freddie Highmore and Depp anchoring the film in a delightful dynamic that keeps the narrative engaging.
At the film's core is the character of Charlie Bucket, portrayed by Freddie Highmore. Living in poverty with his loving yet struggling family, Charlie's life takes an extraordinary turn when he secures a golden ticket to tour Willy Wonka's renowned chocolate factory. Highmore's portrayal brings a relatable and lovable quality to Charlie, making him a compelling protagonist.
Tim Burton's signature style shines in the visual spectacle of the chocolate factory. The production design, complemented by Danny Elfman's whimsical score, creates a fantastical world that is both mesmerizing and slightly eerie. The film's vibrant color palette and imaginative set pieces contribute to an overall sense of wonder.
The supporting cast, featuring the eccentric golden ticket winners and their guardians, adds layers of humor and satire. Each child's downfall becomes a cautionary tale, emphasizing the film's underlying message about the consequences of greed, gluttony, and other vices.

I like the more fever dream-style to this one yet I've always thought the Gene Wilder version was best. I've not read the book in a while but I do remeber it containing the bubble drink that makes you float and office with items cut in half - so I'd say the GW version is more similar to them. Cheers for the reaction guys, brilliant as ever.

2024-02-07 23:28:26 +0000 UTCA few years ago I went on a Wonka kick and read the book and then watched both of the movies and was shocked at how similar this movie was to the book and how many liberties the OG took. It always bothered me that Charlie did something wrong (drink the fizzy drink) in the OG but then got rewarded when it showed all the other kids get punished despite them also not following the rules, that never happened in the book and it makes me happy. Granted, they took some liberties in this as well the whole backstory was new, but I remember when I saw this as a kid and thinking the fact he had a backstory made him more of a compelling character.

2024-01-31 03:26:31 +0000 UTClove this movie, because it has this unique, creepy Tim Burton style, but also lovely moments with charlies family. Seems like a Christmas movie for both adults and children. I was a little disappointed by the new wonka movie. Dont want to spoiler anything but for me it felt extremely childish.

2024-01-22 03:16:36 +0000 UTCI know I watched this plenty of times as a kid, enough for me to remember the lines and add them to my go to references lol, but it's been yeeaaars since I saw this. As soon as Johnny Depp popped in with that "Good morning sunshine, the earth says hello!" I went back and paused it and made my fiancé watch the rest with me lol. He said he didn't care for either Willy Wonka movie as a kid, but I thought he'd appreciate it as an adult and we were both cracking up! I forgot just how hilarious this Wonka is. I told my fiancé, I think Willy Wonka is the og "fuck them kids" lmao.

2024-01-21 00:08:54 +0000 UTCI saw this one once as a kid and it's not as bad as I remember but I still prefer the original movie. I think modern CGI let them do a lot of "wonky weird stuff" which was super cool in some scenes. If you guys ever find it out there, theres a cool documentary about the making of the 1971 film called "Pure Imagination", it gives some funny context to their decisions with the original film.

2024-01-20 18:23:51 +0000 UTCThe original is not what the book was. People comparing this movie to the first have no idea what the book was which this movie is way more accurate to.
PKKite
2024-01-20 07:42:01 +0000 UTCAs others said, this one was much more accurate to the books, and Dahl's wife and kids made sure that was the case. For as much as we the people love Gene's movie, it was very much not Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I enjoy the Gene Wilder version for the soundtrack and for Gene Wilder as the talented actor he is, but that's about it. When it's compared to the book that it was supposed to be it falls quite short as most adaptations do. I always preferred Charlie and the Chocolate Factory more, but for entirely different reasons. I think they did a better job of showing that part of the point of all this *was* to punish the kids for being rotten while rewarding Charlie for his good character. I also love that the family is more complete in this version, and that no matter how hard times are Charlie's parents tried their hardest to shelter him from the true severity of their situation so he could at least get to be a kid for a little bit longer. Also I love how all of the Oompa Loompa songs were in different genres and styles instead of the same tune like in Wilder's version. Ultimately I don't think there's a wrong answer for which one is better. They're both good movies in their own right, that seek to do entirely different things.

2024-01-20 03:18:03 +0000 UTCI just graduated High School when this came out, went with a friend, and buttload of smuggled in wonk candy, to see it lol. I loved it, bought the OST for it, still have it and listen to it even now lol. I love both versions, though this is more accurate to the book, and had really hoped, (maybe one day still) the sequel would follow but.... I'm still hoping for Charlie and The Great Glass Elevator. The songs in this version is also trimmed down versions of the songs the oompas sing originally in book cause some of them were really long, compared to the gene wilder version who used completely new oompa lyrics.

2024-01-20 01:59:44 +0000 UTCDid y’all really think it was that trippy that you felt you should feel high while watching it? Didn’t feel like that to me at all. Now the cat in the hat live action is one where I could see why people might think it’s fun to get high and watch. 😂 I could never tho

2024-01-20 01:52:44 +0000 UTCI remeber watching this on a snowy day in grade 6 recess and absolutely loving it, than went on to purchase the dvd since i loved it so much. The behind the scenes are even more fun than the movie. It shows how the oompa loompas are made with a mix of practial and cgi which still hold up to this day imo. This was a fun watch again with you guys great reaction as always 🤙.

2024-01-20 01:27:50 +0000 UTCAlthough it is difficult not to compare the two versions, I think it is a good thing that they are so different. What's the point of making another adaption if it is the same as the previous one? This way everyone gets a version that agrees with them. Either you like the old one, or the newer one, or you are one of the lucky people who enjoy both. Personally, I prefer the newest version, mostly due to the cinematography (enabled by the newer technology) and that I find all the characters more distinct and memorable in the newer version. However, when it comes to Willy Wonka I will say this, both Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp create their own version of the character that fits well with the tone of their respective movies.

2024-01-20 01:22:05 +0000 UTCLast time I saw this film was over 10 years ago and I really disliked it. Now, watching it as an adult, I really liked it. The original film is still better. If it weren’t for you guys watching it, I probably would have never rewatched this film.

2024-01-19 23:39:30 +0000 UTCBelieve it or not, this was the first version I saw when it first came out. That whole time felt like a fever dream... felt weird rewatching this again after so many years.

2024-01-19 23:11:36 +0000 UTCI still enjoy Gene's better, but I do like this one as well. I personally don't watch these two together because then you can't stop comparing them instead of enjoying them as their own films. This one came out when I was in elementary, maybe 6th grade, and I remember finding this one creepy. As for Wonka himself, I actually enjoyed Depp's portrayal, but it does take a bit to get used to. And, I absolutely adored Freddie as Charlie, the kids in general did well. I remember wanting to see this movie for AnnaSophia Robb (Violet) as she was in everything during this time period. And of course, my friends and I would often quote "I want a squirrel" thanks to this movie. 😂 I personally loved Veruca's downfall better in this movie thanks to the squirrels. I think my biggest issue with this film is that I don't like that they used one person to play all of the Oompa Loompas. It ruined the magic for me, honestly, and I think I found them creepier here as well. I just didn't get excited to see the Oompas appear on screen like I did in the og.

2024-01-19 21:00:47 +0000 UTCFor your guys question at the beginning the gene wilder version is not the original its just the adaptation of Roald dahls book Charlie and the chocolate factory and he actually hated the 1971 movie that he never let anyone make another adaptation until he died and his wife allowed Tim burton to make an adaptation that is actually much more like the book and something he would actually like if he was still alive. I love this movie I'm so glad you guys watched this.
Jordan Garrett
2024-01-19 20:51:25 +0000 UTCLove this movie! Best version to me definitely better than the first as its most accurate to the book and the authors wife and kids had a hand in it. Charlie is such a good kid and so sweet. All the kids did a great job in this film. Johnny really did well in the role.

2024-01-19 20:48:23 +0000 UTCThis is another movie I saw with my class in the theatre after we read the book and had to make a Venn diagram between the movie and the book. I like the darker elements of it.
