EARLY ACCESS: Chernobyl episode 1 FULL REACTION

WOW!!!! What an impactful and chilling first episode.

The episode begins with the catastrophic explosion at Reactor 4, unfolding in real-time. The chaos, confusion, and the palpable fear among the plant workers draw viewers into the immediate aftermath. The storytelling is intense and gripping, keeping us on the edge of our seats as the true scale of the disaster becomes apparent

Craig Mazin and crew did a fantastic job with this first episode. The emotional weight of the episode is undeniable. The fear, confusion, and desperation of the characters are palpable, creating a visceral connection.

If you haven't seen this, we highly recommend giving it a shot.

Watching this with you and it's making me angry again D:

It's just a great series. It's dramatized, but a lot of that is just how to fit such an accident into a TV show. Radiation is weird and counterintuitive. For example, many of the workers on the plant didn't actually die. Hell, several of the reactors on the Chernobyl power plant just continued working for years without any real issue. At the same time, as a hunter here in Germany, if you shoot a boar, you still have to send it in to get it checked for radiation. Not rabbit, deer or duck. But boars love digging up mushrooms. And those love to grow in wet hollows. And back in the day, that's where Chernobyl dust rained down and accumulated and still remains. It's not as bad nowadays. In fact, I never had someone get back to me about radiation levels. But back in the 90s and early 2000s, boars were famous for digging up radioactive stuff. Obviously, you couldn't eat the mushrooms themself either. Now, I don't think anyone ever died directly from this sort of stuff in Europe. But it's still a danger you can't really put into a 5 episode TV show. Making it a bit more dramatized to show the human cost of this accident by making some things more severe and ignoring other topics isn't bad, it's just how TV series work. Just don't think that this series is a 100% correct documentary and you're fine.

Ullrich Pfeiffer

Meh, that's not really true. The show is very accurate, but not 100%. There's a few things. For example, there are three types of nuclear radiation and the most dangerous, Alpha radiation, is stopped by essentially anything. A single sheet of paper, for example. It's so reactive that it reacts with anything in its path. But paper (or clothing, or concrete etc) doesn't care. Concrete doesn't get cancer. Hell, even your skin does a good job at defending against it. It's not healthy by any means to be near an Alphba emitter, but it usually will give you burns (like the firefighters got) instead of internal organ damage. What's really dangerous is if you breathe in dust that contains an Alpha particle or drink it. Then you don't have any protection against it and it's just going to irradiate you from the inside and it's so small that it probably just courses through your system for months if not years. That's why the dust was a problem. That's why they showed that dust cloud and the dust particles moving towards those people. Being far away is generally pretty safe for nuclear accidents, but if you get a bunch of radioactive materials blown into the air you breathe, it doesn't matter how far you are. You're getting the radiation straight into your lungs. That's why those powerplant workers wear white uniforms by the way. It doesn't really protect them, but they see any sort of dust on them and can check if they've accidentally been exposed to radioactive material or they just accidentally bumped into some grimy machinery. The other two types of radiation are still dangerous and harder to block, but not as bad as Alpha radiation. You still wouldn't want to be in a place where there's a lot of it, but it's a sort of calculated risk instead of an immediate death sentence. Pilots and astronauts get irradiated all the time, for example. Even for commercial pilots they have a mandated cooldwon period so they don't get too much exposure, so it's not healthy, but not immediately dangerous to the same degree. So, wearing any sort of PPE doesn't help you against the radiation itself, at least not more than normal clothing would. But if you had a gas mask or hell, even just a surgical mask, you probably wont breathe in as much dust and you cut down the amount of potentially radioactive particles by a lot. It's rather pitiful protection and the firefighters picking up graphite from the core would be fucked either way. But if you're a random civilian a few kilometers away, you have a much better chance with it than without it. As long as there are no radioactive particles in you, you can just walk away. If you have radioactive dust in your lungs, you're just dead...

If you enjoy this series I HIGHLY recommend "The Days" on Netflix about the Fukushima nuclear accident.

This series hit really, really close to home for me because of my Father's stories. He was born in Pripyat and was one of the very few who read the writing on the wall, grabbed my Mother and ran before the committees were able to seal the city off. They stayed with one of the farmers on the outskirts and posed as visiting family so, when they did evacuate eventually, they were able to go with way less radiation exposure. Although less, however, both ended up passing due to leukemia that the doctors here in the US were fairly sure could be linked to Chernobyl's disaster. Though its like my fifth time watching this series, looking forward to watching the entire thing with you guys! Love the reactions!

Laurie

We can't even imagine what that most of been like. Thank you for sharing that with us.

Badd Medicine

Awesome!! 👍🏻

Josip Buretić

It did go over twice if I recall correctly 😂

Badd Medicine

Am I crazy or did I keep hearing a phone vibrating throughout this video? Lol

Simon

This series is so depressing and well done, especially with the score creating this atmosphere ...I'm watching it with you for the fourth time, and I'm always disturbed. I can remember my childhood (Europe) and the measures that were taken, from not being allowed to play outside, to exercises at school, iodine tablets everywhere and our parents' attempts to explain to us children what was happening.

Lirryk

omg thank you, i will check that out

Check out "YouTube Speed Control" app for chrome, it gives you the option for 1.04. Recommend from one of the Patreon's here in the comments.

Badd Medicine

Oh no then I will have the same problem 🙁🙁 because I also watch it on Amazon prime and if they are watching on HBO that will be impossible to sync it with them(the same problem was with one other reactor where I have watched it and it was so frustrating) 🙁

Josip Buretić

I agree with Dave and Oak. While Dyatlov and Fomin seem to be jerks, they are professionals in their field (they are in charge of a nuclear power plant after all). They are in complete denial because their professional knowledge of nuclear power plants tells them it is physically impossible for the core to explode..…“But it did” There is also the fact that, if the core did indeed explode somehow, they are the ones responsible. This definitely has some contribution to their denial, specially when they told everyone else it was under control.

One of the best and heavily researched shows ever made. This is my third time watching with you guys and it hits just as hard as the first time. The medical accuracy of this show is actually spot on. I want to let you know that unless its lead, any amount of PPE is so minimally effective, it may as well not be there. Masks, gloves, they help so marginally. Can't wait for the next episode

I've seen people comment that this is heavily dramatized. While I agree it is, even if it was just a half-truth in the show, the devastation is unimaginable, almost to the point that you can't even believe your eyes. I loved your video and comments and can't wait for next week's episode reaction!

Abigail.M

Oh that's good to know

The same happened with me and the Impossible. I was streaming from Disney Plus in the UK. I thought initially was there some added micro scenes, but the speed was off. The release here is slightly faster. So bizarre.

It'sThatPixie

Something to keep in mind, this is heavily dramatized, so it isn't something you should consider close to historically accurate. But this episode was extremely entertaining none-the-less.

I actually can't watch the reactions for these. I have bought the series on Amazon Prime a while ago and for some reason the HBO Max version is like 0.95x slower. I'll sink up the video and 30 seconds later I'll be ahead. It's maddening

StabKingPro

This is one of the best shows ever, I'm glad you guys are going on this epic journey, you won't regret it !

L AH

😂🤙

Badd Medicine

Oh dang. How close if you don't mind me asking?

Badd Medicine

I watched this for the first time about a year or so ago and I was mad the entire time. Not because it's not amazing because it is, but because these were real people making selfish insane choices that impacted generations of people. That being said, the cast and crew did 100000% on this. One of the best limited series of all time!!!

Adrianna Marie Aka AD

Amazing. I will happily test that out for you. X1.04 should be correct.

GillyBean

We can always upload one and link it in the description. Wouldn't be a bad idea to test it on our end for future data.

Badd Medicine

I love this series I was born near the accident. I was 1 year old when it happened.

Seems all HBO shows port to 25 frames for uk tv refresh rates (even though not needed anymore) there was the same issue with Last of Us. The only thing I can think of is exporting your final vid with it sped up slightly. Though not ideal I’m sure. Speeding up your current upload myself to 1.05 isn’t too bad. Only have to pause you guys every couple of minutes instead of seconds. I appreciate you looking in to it. ❤️ But it may only be a small number of patrons effected so may not be worth the effort

GillyBean

Snap

Libarax

HBO Max is really odd with their encoder. I don't know if there's a good way on our end? But I can try to look into it.

Badd Medicine

Basically same for me, but oh well.. Why not now... 😁

Kiia

Technically it needs to be x1.04 for it to be correct but yt only does in increments of .05. I don’t suppose there’s anyway to get an extra upload of the video sped up to 1.04 for future eps? I don’t know if possible

GillyBean

Same here 😁 now it is already 9:00 PM and I don't know if I should watch it now or tomorrow after work 🤷🏻‍♀️

Josip Buretić

Tip for UK folk syncing up to watch. put this vid on 1.05 playback speed and itll be better matched

GillyBean

I am Ukrainian and my mom grew up in Ukraine, not close to Pripyat, but still close enough. she still recalls the morning after the explosion, when they were not told anything about it, and how they peacefully went to school without knowing any of it.

Milly

So glad you guys are doing Chernobyl, I think it’s my favorite mini series of all time and is fascinating from a historical point of view.

LobackPossum

Not me refresing your page waaaay too many times hoping this reaction would drop 😂 An amazing series!

Kiia

This first episode was amazing and impactful.

Badd Medicine

Chernobyl is such a fascinating show that demonstrates the selflessness of people that were affected by this event and also the length that KGB would go to not seem weak in front of other nations. It’s impactful and frightening.

2 reposts regarding AoT next week: Regarding Aot viewing: Attack on Titan also includes 8 special episodes called OVAs (Original Video Animation) that provide extra content on characters or worldbuilding. Some are optional, while others are highly recommended. A viewing order that includes these OVAs is: After Season 1 A Sudden Visitor: The Torturous Curse of Adolescence (Optional) Distress (Optional) Ilse's Notebook: Record of a Fallen Soldier After Season 2 Lost Girls 1: Wall Sina, Goodbye: Part One Lost Girls 2: Wall Sina, Goodbye: Part Two After Season 3 Part 1 Lost Girls 3: Lost In The Cruel World A Choice with No Regrets: Part One A Choice with No Regrets: Part Two Viewing Notes: - Episodes officially end once the "to be continued..." end card is displayed, otherwise there can be extra content. - Every opening theme contains several spoilers for their respective season/part, that's just how most animes do them. Since you don't know how things arrive to those outcomes, it is still relatively spoiler free. Its up to you guys whether you watch the opening themes or try to avoid them. - The show can easily be spoiled, especially after the manga and anime endings, so be really careful if/when searching anything Aot related. I do 100% agree that a moderator is an absolute must for this series as some people will try to spoil it on purpose. I've seen people get spoiled through DMs and comments. Either a moderator or a designated "I'm alright getting spoiled" person to interact with the community!

DustinEatWorld

so excited to watch this with you guys, I was amazed at this and loved it.
