EARLY ACCESS: Encanto FULL REACTION

Set against the lush backdrop of the Colombian mountains, the Madrigals possess a magical casita that grants unique gifts to each family member. Mirabel, voiced by Stephanie Beatriz, stands out as the only member without a bestowed gift. As she embarks on a journey of self-discovery, the film unfolds into a celebration of family, identity, and the power of acceptance.

The animation is a visual fantastic, with the colorful magic of the casita coming to life in spectacular detail. The Madrigal family's vibrant personalities shine through, thanks to the stellar voice cast, including the charismatic Stephanie Beatriz, the talented Lin-Manuel Miranda, and the incomparable Abuela, voiced by María Cecilia Botero. Encanto beautifully tackles themes of individuality and embracing imperfections. The characters are relatable, their struggles genuine, and their growth heartfelt.

Miranda's musical touch brings the film to life with a memorable soundtrack that blends Colombian rhythms and catchy tunes. The songs, like "We Don't Talk About Bruno" and "Surface Pressure," add depth to the narrative, enhancing emotional moments. We Don't Talk About Bruno is pretty darn catchy!

"And for them to try to justify and excuse the grandma as "I was just doing it for my family" is absolutely horrific and just serves to reinforce my disdain for anything that Disney has made in the last 10 years or so." At NO point did they try to justify or excuse her. The movie makes a very solid point of showing that Abuela is wrong, and having her realize it herself. The only thing it does in the end is EXPLAIN her behavior, which is by no means the same thing as justifying or excusing it. This is just not a fair critique in the slightest.

Amy Petty

What is bad about it, though? Why not elaborate if you're going to so definitively declare that you knew it would be bad before you ever even saw it?

Amy Petty

The villian of this movie is generational trama and familial expectations. I am glad that you guys hold Coco as your example because so many people forget about it because the songs in this movie and while I love this movie you guys are right in that its not Coco. As a side note I watched this and the impossible, I am dehydrated from all the crying.

Maria Sauceda

Yes it IS horrific, and that’s the point of the movie - the Abuela’s actions literally break her whole family. The grandmother was a refugee who went through some major trauma, then in her attempts to ‘protect the family’ and ‘make them strong’ she passed down her trauma to her children and grandchildren. This type of generational trauma is all too common in real life, both in refugee populations and others. This is a story about how wounds can so easily be passed down, and it’s about how healing can begin if everyone is willing to try. Yes, it’s far too common that family dynamics like this exist in real life - that’s why stories like this are important.

Ah this makes more sense! Thanks for clarifying. I know usually with y’all we can hear the movie but the image gets blurred intermittently so I was so confused at first!

Elizabeth Green

That's because of copyright laws. We have posted in the description, in the video, pinned comment & tier that these are watch along formats. We give a little bit for syncing purposes then the movie/show will be blurred & muted. We don't own the property and don't have distribution rights. 🤙

Badd Medicine

Not sure if y’all know, but the audio for them movie doesn’t play and can only hear your commentary after 1:48 (1 hour 48 mins in the very beginning first few mins). This is on patreon app and YouTube app. I was excited to watch this with yall until the audio for the movie didn’t work for me anymore 😢

Elizabeth Green

My fav part was the end when the community that they helped so much rallied around the Madrigals to help them in their time of need. That was huge.

Nakia Smith

Abuela saw herself in Isabela. If you look at both Isabela and Mariano, the resemblance between them and Abuela & Pedro is pretty stark. I think in a way, Abuela put pressure on Isabela to marry Mariano because deep down she wanted see the life she was supposed to have lived, with Pedro. Or something like that.

Miss_CJ

Agree!! It's really good and very fresh movie... Glad it's on the list!

Ayla

I think this movie is very relatable for people who grew up in a toxic home... It's impossible for me not to cry the part where mirabel gets her doorknob and everyone looks proud... Cause it's something I wish I could've had. First time i watched the movie the ending felt kinda rushed and I was slightly mad at everyone forgiving abuella that fast... Cause in reality the years of control and abuse still happened and your own traumas don't make up for acting that way... But in the end i've watched it multiple times, the music and colors are so spectacular i really enjoy it now! And its very heartwarming :) Loved the reactionvideo!!

Ayla

Which part? Was it the part where I didn't like a movie that you probably adore, or was it where I talked about how my mother suffered through years of abuse and torment all so she could hear a "Good Job" from her mother? Which one was too "dramatic" for you?

Marco Gutierrez

lol a bit dramatic there

Kelly Melvin

I definitely disagree that everything Disney has put out lately has been bad but they’ve mostly been mediocre for sure. Recent movies I’ve loved are Luca, Moana, Big Hero 6, and Onward and the rest were meh or I didn’t like. I completely agree with you about the grandmother too. She got off WAY too easily with what she did.

Alanna Banana 🍌

well damn, sorry that you feel that way

Cinderkit5

Should definitely check out Moana, the rock is in it, def a movie worth watching

Elias

Nah, comparing this one to Coco is way off base. On a personal level I can't stand Lin Manuel Miranda's work in any capacity and the music in this movie just goes to reinforce that opinion. But on a quality level, this movie doesn't even come close to Coco. The message and plot fo the movie itself is atrocious too. The grandma supposedly has this amazing strong love for her late husband and she misses him, but she takes all the credit for the miracle that at best they both made possible, but in all likelihood he was solely responsible for making it happen. It was his sacrifice that stalled their pursuers so that the rest of the people could flee, but somehow it's the grandma's miracle? This movie brings to light something that I see in a few different cultures but I see it a lot in my own Mexican culture, and it's this notion of the matriarch of the family. My own grandmother terrorized my mother growing up and constantly made her feel like she was worthless because she wasn't as good as her bothers and sisters at certain things. My mother tore herself up constantly trying to please my grandmother but she was never good enough. I know I'm not the only one that has experienced this extremely problematic and horrific family dynamic. And for them to try to justify and excuse the grandma as "I was just doing it for my family" is absolutely horrific and just serves to reinforce my disdain for anything that Disney has made in the last 10 years or so.

Marco Gutierrez

I was always adamant about never watching it because I knew it'd be bad, and I wasn't wrong. Disney has long since stopped being capable of producing anything of quality. It's a miracle that Coco was even as good as it was because the problems started since even before it came out.

Marco Gutierrez

i second this

J Knight

I was excited for this movie when it came out but I was left really disappointed. It’s really beautiful and colourful visually but the plot, characters, and music were very meh.

you guys should react to Hamilton!!!!

Elvira Heredia

Can't wait to start this finally! Movie night ❤️❤️

Sarah

Great movie 🍿 great reaction...... Now I'm rooting for Moana, Zootopia 😊😊😁😁

Love10 ❤️

Encanto is so good! So happy y'all loved it. I hope you guys can add the movie "About Time" to the list at some point, it's equally as touching 🙌🏼

Ruby

For me this film is a 4. I do agree that you shouldnt compare films to eachother, but there is something that just doesnt put it up there for me like alot of other people. And i dont need to relate to a film either to feel more connected to it. I think its a great film, story and music are solid and good. Its very beautiful and colourful and the animations are great. I get emotional when i watch this film, especially at the end. But it doesnt give me that wouw factor. Good story, i like it but not up there for me with alot of other animations.

AyaaChann

At least a week. There's other items that are being edited ahead of this. 🤙

Badd Medicine

When will the YT cut be up?

Paige Fraker

Oh, forgot about this movie. It's beautiful!

Janine Langer

Yay! Really happy you enjoyed Encanto! It is one of my most loved Disney movies 🥰 I don't know if someone already mentioned it but Lin-Manuel Miranda also wrote the songs for Hamilton! I was very excited when I saw you were doing that too and now I'm even more hyped for it bc you seem to have really enjoyed the music in Encanto 🤩🥰

Mone

I know, honestly The Prince Of Egypt is my favorite Dreamworks film, I know most people will say Kung Fu Panda or HTTRD but I think Prince Of Egypt blows them out of the water but again that's just me, lol. And The Land Before Time is a film I grew up with and is one of my all time favorites.

Annie519

I'd love to see them react to Anastasia...that's a great one too!

Sierra

The Prince of Egypt has such gorgeous animation and music. And The Land Before Time...my heart hurts every time I hear the orchestral theme 😂

Verity

I love this movie. Honestly it's Disney's best since Coco in my opinion, we have had some good ones but this was on another level, again to me at least. I love the songs, without them you lose so much story and they are all so catchy, there isn't a single song that I skip or don't care for. All the characters have such great and different personalities, honestly any one of them could have a spin off and I would watch it in a heartbeat. It was so creative to have the house come to life and it had so much personality too, you always knew what it was feeling and trying to say. I do like that Mirabelle and Abuela are really the only ones that interact with it, the others really don't need to. I appreciated that they showed how they were all struggling, not just Mirabelle. Luisa had the pressure of being the strongest and protecting everyone, to the point she never could take a break. And Isabelle had the pressure of always having to be perfect, it was never enough and that would definitely be stressful and it makes sense why she was so upset about the ruined proposal, because for her that was ultimate thing she could do for her Grandma, maybe that could finally be enough. And I love that they just want to help their community, they aren't trying to be superheroes, they feel like it's their duty. And that's also why I give Abuela a little slack because she had pressure too from the whole town, her intentions were in the right place, she in her mind had to think about the whole town. And I liked that they kind of were setting Bruno up to be the villain but he ends up being the sweetest and most tragic, even more the Mirabelle. And I love that all their gifts were ones that they would need if they were to be attacked again or needed to rebuild. They had a healer, a seer, someone powerful, they could grow crops for food, someone that could hear the danger come. This film is a lot of fun to watch on a second viewing because there are quite a few clever things that you didn't notice before. Like when Antonio got his gift and the fireworks went off Dolores covered her ears since her hearing is so amplified, she also claps using her two fingers and all the little subtle hints that she knew about Bruno being there all along, she's trying to tell Mirabelle during the We Don't Talk About Bruno number but I think she also didn't want to expose Bruno's secret. And at the breakfast table when Dolores mentions Mariano wants 5 babies you immediately see flowers sprout in Isabella's hair and Abuela takes out the one white flower and "fixes" her hair. It really showed that Isabella honestly did have to always be perfect. Oh and one last fun fact, the river at the end is a real river in Columbia and the water really does have all those beautiful colors, it's called the rainbow river. Some other animated films I would love to see you guys watch is The Prince Of Egypt, The Iron Giant, The Land Before Time, Zootopia, Wreck It-Ralph and Enchanted (yes it's kind of cheating but it still counts, lol)

Annie519

Enjoyed the reaction:) Do check out Elemental on disney+ as well!

Abi P

That is on our list👍

Badd Medicine

Loved the reaction guys. One of my favorite Disney Movies.

Dacorian Campbell

I'm so glad y'all enjoyed the music. Was it purposeful or coincidental that you're also watching Hamilton (another Lin-Manuel Miranda project) in such close succession? I totally understand relating to a movie and the impact that can have on your experience of the film, while also recognizing that that isn't always the most important thing when rating a movie. I've seen phenomenal movies, rated them 5-stars (or answers) and said, "I will NEVER watch that again."

Lolilie

Beautiful film but it fell flat for me. Abuela's character needed more development and time spent with Mirabel. A flashback and a quick apology wasn't enough to earn the happy ending, in my opinion. Abuela should have gone on an adventure with Mirabel and Bruno or something.

Lena

This was a good one! I absolutely love this movie. Her gift at the end was bringing the family together! Mirabel will be taking on the role of becoming the new family matriarch, that’s why her door didn’t give her a gift because the entire house is her “room” If you notice abuela and mirabel seem the be the only ones to really interact with casita so it’s a sign that she will take over. Don’t know if you noticed but each family is sort of a play on Hispanic household stereotypes: Everyone respects abuelas and in hispanics households they are so respected and beloved by everyone in the family. They tend to be the ones to call the shots and take charge. Mom is always in the kitchen and making sure your’re ok and is protective. A Hispanic moms cooking is unmatched and so good it heals your soul. (That’s why she can heal) You got the cousin that’s said to be pretty nosey which is why Dolores hears everything’s lol Theirs always that one goofy cousin who always tries to make you laugh which is why Camilo shapshifts You got the drunk aunt, but in this case. The aunt that can’t seem to get her emotions in order (pepa) The sibling that’s expected to be perfect and do well all the time (Isabela) And the most relatable to me the people pleaser sibling that feels like they have to help everyone and have to be strong and feels the weight of the world on their shoulders (Luisa) Overall it’s a fantastic depiction of he dynamic in Hispanic households and very relatable

Raquel Perodin

Lastly, please watch Soul soon. In my opinion, it is the deepest and most mature, complex, movie Pixar has made. Visually, kids like it, but the plot is for us.

Kaitlin Tulbert

As someone who has difficult family relationships and has felt "unseen" and misunderstood by my family, I related to Mirabelle so much and cried during my first watch much like how Oak heavily related to Coco. It for sure comes down to our life experiences and what themes resonate with us, and I feel like Encanto is such a masterpiece because there are so many characters and lessons that everyone might find someone to relate to in this film if they've grown up within family dysfunction or experienced trauma. Because of your appreciation for the music's role in the storytelling of this film, I'm so excited for you all to experience Hamilton, as it's another piece of art born from Lin Manuel Miranda's marvelous talents of storytelling through music.

Kaitlin Tulbert

I've heard people discuss how each of the characters represented each of the dysfunctional family roles: the golden child (Isabella), the scapegoat (Bruno), the invisible child (Mirabelle), the "clown" or mascot (Camilo), the Caregiver (Julieta), the Hero (Luisa), etc.

Kaitlin Tulbert

We need the Incredibles, Finding Nemo, and the Toy Story movies

Kelly Melvin

As for your question Oak: I watched this movie alone between christmas and new years in 21. It took me four hours to finish, because I just had to stop and literally sob my eyes out. My grandma was exactly like this, my whole family in a way, where you try and try and try and you just KNOW you're valued less, but no one can tell you why. It's an open secret your least liked, and everyone in the family can emphasize one on one, but also everyone knows you just kind of don't belong in that family. Not a black sheep, because you're not misbehaving or being unpleasant, you just don't FIT. I am also, like Luisa, the oldest of all the children- when she sang " I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service" I had to stop for the first time. I'm doing fine and this isn't meant to be a sob story ; ) But yes, there's definitely people that got hit HARD by this, which is why it's recommended so much. Coco made me cry too, but this hit me like a freight train. (and just a small addendum, if you listen to the lyrics of Mirabels song, in the end she accomplished all she wished for, moved the mountains, made (Isabella) new flowers grow etc. Also the candle and Mirabels dress are full of butterflies- she was always meant to take over as Abuela's successor as matriarch, who also hasn't a gift!)

Ginster

Such a great movie, and I loved seeing your reaction! Thank you. 😁 Oak hit the nail on the head: this is about generational trauma and, I would also say, familial expectation. Yes, Abuela was the one to undergo the trauma of fleeing her home and losing her husband (and who knows what else) -- and her tiny babies probably felt something emotionally at least -- but that can echo down through families via actions and reactions to everyday life, and expectations and obligations placed upon future generations (consciously or subconsciously). I love this movie for that, for not having a traditional villain and for tackling this subject. My favourite character is Delores. She just makes my heart happy. After that, it's Jorge in his tiny role. 🤣 If you re-watch, check out the first floor walkway behind Delores and Mirabel during We Don't Talk About Bruno. 😉 The music in this movie is also so, so good. I love Lin-Manuel's work (and I can't wait for your Hamilton reaction), but I would echo others here and suggest Moana as well. I love Moana even more than I love Encanto, for so many reasons, and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is so good in his role. I think I may just re-watch that tomorrow myself. Have a great weekend, everyone! 🤗
