EARLY ACCESS: Van Helsing FULL REACTION

Van Helsing is a thrilling action-horror film that reimagines the legendary vampire hunter's adventures. Hugh Jackman stars as Gabriel Van Helsing, a warrior of the Vatican sent to Transylvania to assist Anna Valerious, played by Kate Beckinsale, in ridding her family of the curse of Dracula, the most feared vampire of all.

The film takes audiences on a rollercoaster ride filled with fun CGI and intense battles against iconic monsters like Frankenstein's monster, werewolves, and, of course, vampires. The action sequences are impressive, and the special effects hold up well even today. It does delve into themes of redemption and heroism. Jackman's portrayal brings depth and charisma to the role, making Van Helsing a fun hero.

However, the movie does have its downsides. The plot can be convoluted at times. Some characters lack just a little bit of development, and the story prioritizes action over character depth. Visually a fun ride and action-packed film that modernizes classic horror monsters. It's an enjoyable watch for those who appreciate thrilling battles and gothic settings. We would recommend it to those who haven't seen it. What was your reaction? What did we miss?

Still my favorite werewolf designs. Underworld did a great job too, but this was awesome. Love this movie!

So first and foremost I love this movie, I'm ecstatic that you guys watched it and enjoyed it as well! Next thing is that I know you said that you saw they made Van Helsing into a series, however, it is not related to the movie in any shape or form. it's a great series if you wanted to get into it but it's not related to the movie at all.

Megan Moore

(we all hold hands in our Peak Vampire Era bisexual prayer circle) My favourite was Aleera the red-headed vampire 😭

Verity

Omg me too!!! I wonder how many of us have this shared experience 😭

Bee

Hahah yesss, true! I still have to go back and watch their Underworld reactions, I haven’t watched them in years!

Bri

Let's goo

Badd Medicine

I COMPLETELY MISSED THIS. IM SO FUCKING STOKED FOR A STUPID GOOD TIME. 3 WHISKEYS IN, 2 TO 4 DURING, LET'S GO!!!!

Eric Wallace

I saw this my junior year in college and loved it. I was never much into monster movies as a kid, but I was definitely into X-Men, so I was on a huge Hugh Jackman kick at the time this came out, so I went to see it. I saw it three or four times in theaters, if I recall correctly, and looking back on it - yeah, it's cheesy at points and there is overacting - but I would very much have liked to at least see a sequel with Van Helsing exploring what Dracula told him and coming to terms with the fact that he's been around for hundreds of years. The implication of him being an angel or something is fascinating "Gabriel" being one of the angels who is often referred to as the "Left Hand of God" - there's some juicy stuff in there that they could have explored further.

Megan Saunders

😂 Between this and Underworld, I was EATING in 2003/2004. Who knew Beckinsale would have such an impact on the youth??

Verity

Wait I love this comment! I was 11 when it came out and this was one of my first bisexual awakenings too lmao.

Bri

You know what I still love this movie lol. I've seen it quite a few times but it's been years since I watched it and I somehow blocked out the very ending lmao.

Bri

Next after this: “Dracula: Dead and Loving it"

Charles Grimes

You mean the advice which you can't even follow yourself? 😂 Drink some water and rest.

Verity

Fine. Don’t take my advice. 🤷‍♂️

Bartleby

Aww that's sweet! Didn't know that.

Verity

Heyyooo, a zesty bit of misogyny to spice up this comments section? 😂 I'm womanly 24/7 because, well, I'm a woman. The fact that you get so heated over people enjoying a fun monster flick is as embarrassing as it is funny. You could always, y'know...keep on scrolling until you find a reaction you'd enjoy. They have loooads. But then, why do the normal-person thing when you could be a sanctimonious bore and give people second-hand embarrassment instead? Keep gnashing your teeth, I'll be over here being all womanly and shit (and enriching my life with a vast variety of movies, because being a filmaholic isn't a fucking team sport).

Verity

I would suggest not conducting yourself in a womanly manner over terrible disposable garbage. Let me know if you need further instructions. Happy to provide them for you!

Bartleby

😂 So, how do you suggest we should conduct ourselves? In your interactions, you have done very little but condescend and name-call other Patrons, and label the things they enjoy "crap" out of some feeble sense of elitism. Rules for thee but not for me? Oh, and using "womanly" as an insult? LOL. Take a fucking seat 😂.

Verity

In real life...dracula is married to one of his brides...the actor is married to one of the actresses that plays his bride, the brunette.

Jill I

@Sarah While I may disagree with you on some things, (the visual effects of Bram Stoker’s Dracula all were made with nothing beyond the optical capabilities of what was possible during the silent era so calling them dated is a bit moot) I appreciate the thoughtfulness of your post. Certain snowflakes and pearl clutchers could learn a thing or two on how to conduct themselves in the face of nothing more than a difference of opinion. The hysteria certain flowers react with over a terrible forgettable movie is more womanly than anything you responded with. Have a better one.

Bartleby

I'm sure they will eventually watch Dracula as well. I love Van Helsing. When it came out I thought it was awesome. I haven't rewatched it in years but I'm sure not all of the effects have held up now. But otherwise I'm sure I'll still love watching it. Everyone's tastes are different though. I personally think it's great to watch as many movies as possible so I like that they are watching all of these films and I don't doubt they will eventually watch Dracula as well. The thing with Dracula is, for me, it was amazing when I was younger and even scared me when I was little. As I got older I loved it still and Love Song For A Vampire by Annie Lennox is a classic and a favorite of mine. But I rewatched it a few weeks ago and did notice there was some ridiculous things in it, some scenes or acting that kind of didn't come off the best. And I saw a recent reaction from a couple on YouTube who for the most part didn't think it was a very good movie. So I think sometimes older films are (a product of their time) and can lose some of what made them amazing at the time. New viewers might not see them the same way after so much time has passed. That being said, I still know it's an amazing film and probably the top vampire/Dracula film ever made. It's a must-watch. And I know it was a masterpiece when it released and had tons of nominations. I love it personally even though some bits of it don't hit the same anymore for me. So even if they watch it you never know if they'll like it. Especially since we all have different tastes. 🤷‍♀️ Which means you can say that it's better but it doesn't actually mean it is. It's just your opinion. Which is great! I think it's a great film. But maybe you don't have to tear down other films, that other people might love, and hurt other people in doing so. And instead just say something like "I hope you guys watch Dracula! In my opinion Gary Oldman is the best Dracula!" Idk, I just feel like that whole comment was so unnecessary especially because this is supposed to be exclusively a Badd Medicine community area so there shouldn't be any members making any other members, or making any of the guys, feel like crap or feel bad about what they enjoy watching. We all pay to be here on Patreon where it's a sort of exclusive community, so we are all here for the same reason. So comments like this shouldn't be happening.

Sarah

Yeah, Answer has definitely seen the movie before. Knew way to much before the scenes!

Jill I

I was probably 10 when I saw this movie, and it was the coolest shit ever at the time. And as a kid just starting to comprehend my latent bisexuality, Kate Beckinsale and the three vampire Brides really, um...made me realise some things about myself xD

Verity

Are you this corny in real life or only on the internet?

Verity

I knew about Faramir being in this... but Robbie Coltrane is in the movie too!? I somehow never realized that. It's hilarious, if it actually is true, that apparently Hugh was ready, willing, and able to go full frontal in this movie, according to the research they read on How Did This Get Made.

Jeff K

lol actually went quite well!..... though it was junior high :D, classic arcade rounds, mall walk n shop then a movie n eats... then folks awkward pickup ha! Grand Memories*love this movie* the best Frankenstein Monster. This shoulda been the start of a new league of extraordinary gentleman me thinks

Cojuancidence

I was very much impressed by this movie when I watched it in my childhood back at 00s. Long-hair Hugh Jackman in the hat become my perfect image of a cool hero and what effect Kate had I think I don't need to say. Also as Oak said, since then, when I think of Dracula, I think of the image made by Richard Roxburgh in this film. And it was recently that I found out Faramir and Hagrid were also in the movie.

Artem Dmytrenko

Definitely enjoyed this more than Underworld. Kinda wish they made at least 2 more.

Ron Banks

Thanks! I enjoyed this movie & reaction. I did get a chance to see this in the theaters. And I have a copy.. somewhere. I am a fan of Van Helsing the series on Netflix. Without giving spoilers: it’s worth a 1st episode watch. Thanks Again!

Shirlene Wright

Yeah, it's from the post where they announced what's coming out this week, he was crying they didn't react to Bram Stroker's Dracula instead of this and said "Looks like craps back on the menu!". All I said to him was "The door is right there" and here he is crying.

Shane Kolaga

'Triggered', no its calling out some toxic ass person. That's what it is. Not ANYWHERE did I say that Van Helsing was good. All I said was it is ENJOYABLE. YOU are the one claiming I'm saying that. Just you. You got 'triggered' as you say when I told you that you could leave if you don't like what they react to. THAT'S IT. You're a toxic person. Plain and simple.

Shane Kolaga

I mean, well done animatronics and makeup effects of one character doesn't make a whole movie good. The transformation itself I'll agree is well done, but the final werewolf itself looks goofy as hell and the animatronics for it aren't as great and you can tell because they haven't stood up to the test of time as some others have like the dinos in Jurassic Park, the Xenomorph, The Thing, ET, Yoda, or even the Gremlins.

Alex Boatman

@Shane - gotcha, was not aware of any of that.

Jeff K

...did that person decide they would rather not have a second date after you subjected them to this movie? Hahaha (I kid, I kid)

Jeff K

Ha, took a date to this one when it came out in theatre :D

Cojuancidence

@Shane Triggered… Party of one!

Bartleby

I had no intentions of saying anything at all. But fanboys with terrible tastes comments inspired me to provide my valuable input that is sorely needed among so many patrons pointing the way to crap.

Bartleby

I am not the biggest fan of Van Helsing, but Badd Medicine doesn't work for me so they can watch whatever they want. See how easy it is to offer your opinion without criticizing others?

Chris Foster

Huzzah!

Cojuancidence

Honestly just fuck right off you whiny little baby. Like serious GTFO if you're just going to spew shit. Go be an incel somewhere else my guy.

Shane Kolaga

He commented before and he was taking a shot at me about this. He literally called it a crap movie and was pissy they didn't watch what he wanted them to, I just called him out for being that way because they didn't watch something he wanted.

Shane Kolaga

So you guys saw some crap werewolf transformations, and your audience directed you to more crap, instead of directing you back to 1981 for An American Werewolf in London. Which features the most iconic werewolf transformation scene in movie history, crafted by Oscar winning make up effects artist and legend, Rick Baker. Perhaps the failure lies with the less than sophisticated wannabe cinephiles. They gave you some bad directions guys. And if you were impressed with this performance of Dracula, well than Gary Oldman in Bram Stoker’s Dracula would have just made your heads explode. This crap movie was not the way to be introduced to these classic characters guys. As much as a heartthrob Hugh Jackman may be, he ain’t no Anthony Hopkins.

Bartleby

I hope you were able to look up the meaning of the word chivalry since last time

Bartleby

Just chiming in with my two cents, but I read his comment as being tongue-in-cheek.

Jeff K

Not every movie has to be the best movie ever made, they just have to be enjoyable! This movie is just fun, first time I saw it was at my local DriveIn theater (my area still has one!) And by the end of the movie on the final fight it started dry thundering with lightning behind the screen! Totally set the mood for the movie with Frankenstein and what not!

Shane Kolaga

Noticed how he didn't just spew out "its crap", yes movies can be bad. Doesn't make them not enjoyable dumbass. You have that stick so far up your ass you're getting splinters on your tongue

Shane Kolaga

Hell yeah the early 2000s 🤘

Verity

How dare you criticize a movie they’ve decided to watch!!! You’ve crossed the line pal!

Bartleby

When this came out we loved it so much and it was one of those movies we would play on DVD every day. 😆 Haven't seen it in a while now but it's always been one of my top favorite vampire films. I enjoyed Underworld alot but I think this was always way above Underworld for me even. I always loved the effects with Dracula's Brides. Though I'm curious when I rewatch it tonight if it will hold up as how I remember it. 🤔 Can't wait to see your guys' reactions!

Sarah

It's a fun, but honestly really pretty bad movie that's carried by the charisma of Jackman and Beckinsale. But, it's also the focus of one of my favorite ever episodes of How Did This Get Made, when they had Seth Rogen on to talk about it. Such a funny episode of that podcast, highly recommend.

Jeff K

One of my favorite werewolf designs
