It's not relevant whether preference for the dub is a minority opinion, and I'm not sure you can quantify that claim even so. It's NOT hit and miss at all. I've watched the entire series up to the point where the dub ends - nearly one thousand episodes, and it's fine, it's not remotely hit and miss. And I can say this after having watched a substantial chunk of the subbed version. I agree that the emotions aren't conveyed the same way. I think they're WORSE. To declare that the subbed version is definitely better is a subjective statement, not an objective one, and ignores the fact that most of us among the American audience watching the show, do not speak Japanese and would not get the intended impact of the emotional conveyance anyway. You're not going to get a BETTER experience from reading subtitles if the argument is that the DUBBED language does not convey emotion well, not if you are unable to comprehend the original language in the first place. Either way, I watched a couple hundred episodes of the subbed version before starting over with the dub, and I can confirm that the dub is perfectly fine and conveys emotion just fine. There's no loss of emotional impact at any point. And if you watch the subtitles at the same time, you very quickly realize that the subtitles are the same as those written for the Japanese audio. They are NOT subtitles matched to the English dub. And if you keep them on, you see rather a LOT of instances where the sub translation does not match what's happening in the scene at all. Moreover, as I said, if you listen to the dub, you get treated to a lot of jokes that aren't conveyed the same or nearly as well from just reading the subtitles. I wouldn't tell a Japanese listener to throw on Japanese subtitles to an English dub because I know they'd miss out on the natural experience of dubbed dialogue delivered in their own idioms, etc, and experience jokes more naturally than trying to deal with a faulty sub translation. So I wouldn't tell an English listener to do it that way either. The dub is 100% fine and nobody should be discouraged from sticking with it.

It's a minority opinion to prefer the dubs. The dubbed version is a hit and miss when it comes to the VAs and the emotions just aren't conveyed in the same way it is in the subbed version. The subbed version is definitely better, though at the end of the day, you could just sample both and pick what seems better.

I dearly hope so. Even if it's only the first arc, which is 61 episodes in total - and of which this live action season covers only the first 45. I concur with other commenters that it's worth watching the series, period, even if y'all opted to do it as a personal watch party and not include it as a reaction series. And I repeat that the dub is the best version to watch. The subtitles are more than a bit wonky at times. If you happen to watch the English dub with subtitles on, you notice that they're the same subtitles for the Japanese audio and that there's some pretty unfortunate translation issues that stand out badly in certain key moments. And there are some absolutely FANTASTIC jokes made with the English dub that just aren't present in the subbed version. Anyway, I'm repeating myself from a different comment - the powerful emotional beats y'all got from watching Nami's story unfold here? It's ever so much more intense in the anime version. And there ends up being a LOT more to to Sanji's story, too, because they flesh out his story with Chef Zeff even more.

What are the odds of you guys doing reactions to the One Piece anime? Yes, I know, I know - it currently stands at over 1,100 episodes. But it is a PHENOMENAL show - it's no exaggeration to compare it directly to the emotional impact of Airbender. And while it would obviously take many more weeks to get through to the most recent episodes, it otherwise wouldn't require you guys to do anything different, I'd think. (And I personally would recommend watching the dub, if y'all could actually be persuaded to do this. It is high quality and avoids some weird translation issues with the subtitles).
