EARLY ACCESS: Barbarian FULL REACTION

Ladies and gentlemen, this film was certainly intriguing. The opening act had a captivating quality with its classic horror ambiance. From our perspective, especially that of the Oak, it seemed like the stage was meticulously set to introduce the antagonist. However, the plot took an unexpected and fantastic turn. Bill Skarsgård's performance was outstanding, and Georgina Campbell consistently delivered excellence throughout the film. Their on-screen chemistry, tailored for the horror genre, left us yearning for more.

In the second act, we are introduced to Justin Long's character, and the filmmakers masterfully craft him to be instantly unlikable from the very beginning. As the story unfolds, you can't help but root against him. However, the film does leave us with a few lingering "whys" from a logical perspective of a few characters.

The screenplay does a fantastic feel of deception and tension. It keeps the audience on the edge of their seats, and at no point are we allowed to feel overly confident in our theories or predictions. The transition from the first act to the second is undeniably the film's high point.

The thread of humor woven throughout the movie, while delivering chuckles, acts as a clever ploy to initially put the audience at ease, only to follow it up with the most unexpected and surreal sequences imaginable. We would recommend this, but it does feel like you will like it or dislike it.

That’s what I assumed happened as well

Nicholas Scala

sad ?!

Nicholas Scala

To be fair, Keith was killed so quickly after saying he got bitten. And we didn’t see his whole body so he could’ve had bite marks. As to what happened to his body, maybe Mother and her dad ate him.

i thought this movie was more sad than scary 😭 when i first watched it

stephanie

YAY another horror movie

stephanie

what if?? Keith was already a prisoner indoctrinated into believing to help get more ppl down , 1. His car was no where to be seen in the film, 2. he repeatedly says i have slept in worse places than this 3. he have nightmares when he sleeps 4. in the tunnel he said he was bit by someone but did not show any signs of it. 5. He was eventually leading Tess towards the mother inside the tunnel , towards the Old guy or towards the pit for mother. 5. At exactly 1.19.00 ish when AJ was goign towards the old man room there was a scream, a male one but seconds later it was distracted by mother coming towards AJ. 6. where was Keith Body?? and there was no blood in the place where that killing took place when AJ comes there with light 7. why the mother opened door of Tess but did not take her/Keith down? Mother was very strong, she could have took both I believe mother beat the C**p out of Keith as he was too slow in bringing her down to layer.

Lock_Down

Well that was creepy as all heck lmaooo not gonna be able to sleep for a couple weeks 🤣

They did a great misdirection with Bill Skarsgard's character because the first time I've watched this I thought he's the bad guy. I was surprised they killed him off, but yeah, there are a few plot holes still a good movie overall.

I LOVE the first half of this film. I didn't like the route they took after that though. I think they were heading somewhere super creepy and awesome if they'd kept the vibe going from the first half. I wasn't a fan of the explanation and the weird lady wanting babiesss. 😆 I would've preferred something more creepy and supernatural/paranormal. It was extra spooky and then it switched to sort of humorous, slightly gross, weirdness. Lol

Sarah

She did exactly what I’d do, take a picture of his license & send to a friend. On first dates, I always send the guys info to my friend just in case so I found that really relatable. If it were a rom com I think the first 45 minutes would play out the same but with a way more lighthearted feel.

Dee

😂 its good to see your perspective on this. If this wasn't a horror film, I'm sure this would've been an interesting rom-com maybe? And I wonder how the view point would've been. 🤔

Badd Medicine

Poor Oak’s heart🤣 I’d 1000% die in this situation if Keith were really the bad guy. Double booked with a cute guy?? Listen, I’m very single, I’m living life on the edge…if it’s my time to go🤷🏽‍♀️😂😂 idk what I’d really do, maybe camp out in a hotel lobby somewhere.

Dee

Exactly. I would have preferred your version of the movie. 😄

Stephanie

im not even 30 minutes in but Oak's reaction has me laughing my ass off so im not that scared right now while watching this!!! lol thank you Oak!

Mikayla Pazzi

I was exactly like Oak throughout this movie.

😁 I thought it was pretty cool how they set up Keith to be (potentially) a creep or even worse, only for him to be the only decent, helpful guy in the whole movie. It kept me guessing, and even now I'm still undecided. Was there *really* a big convention in town that booked up all the hotels, or did he lie about it so Tess would stay? Imagine if he WAS a serial killer and the bed/bucket dungeon belonged to him, but he didn't realise he was sharing the tunnels with another killer.

Verity

Good question, I assumed because of the woman's crazy strength, she propelled herself so fast that she overtook Tess and cushioned her. Movie physics!! xD

Verity

Okay, so I have to say this movie did something no other horror movie has done before. It made me cover my ears and turn my head half aside for 60 % of the movie, especially during the tunnel scenes. I felt so uncomfortable. So, in terms of the horror element, the suspense it did a great job. Apart from that it felt like two movies were put into one and I agree with the user "Verity" that the movie would have been as good as or even better imo if they just made it about Tess and Keith. The whole movie could have been about the uncertainty if he's a creep, a bad guy or if something else is in the house, is he aware of it or is he really that nice and innocent and totally unaware of the scary stuff going on. After all the doubts we had about Keith and his intentions I felt so bad for him when he got killed. I guess that's what you get when you play Pennywise. People don't trust you anymore.😅

Stephanie

This was a first-time watch for me too. Wow! I'm not a huge horror fan but I really enjoyed it! I like the strategic casting of Skarsgard here— he always plays the creepy guy so we're immediately set up to distrust his character, which makes the reveal so much more effective I feel. That was really well done. I gotta say I was so pulled into the story that I didn't notice some of the plot holes Oak pointed out 🤣 but I'm with you guys about the second tunnel (absolutely nobody would go down there alone), and the way the cops just waved off the distressed woman who claimed to be abducted (wtf?) Overall, really enjoyed this. Thanks for the watch-along!

JessTellsTales

Let me talk to you!! You guys and this community are great. YEAH!!!

Hunter Watkins

Oh! And I totally agree that a lot of it just didn't make sense...but, as yall also pointed out, some of it made way too much sense. The blending of the two made this super enjoyable because you could say, "omg, people really DO get kidnapped or killed in bad neighborhoods BUT airbnb would NEVER let this house be rented on their site." ....but what if they did?? Oh, and genetic disorders make a body weaker rather than stronger....but what if it didn't? Idk, it's like...each plot hole has a corresponding fear attached to it. Like...what if the plot hole is just what we tell ourselves to banish the fear? I know I might be looking WAY too into it, but I like most of all that this movie makes you think twice. Loved the reaction and every point made is totally valid!

Jessi

I don’t think AJ was lying about what he did to his costar. He just feels so powerful that he can’t even fathom the fact that convincing a person who originally said no to sex is SA someone, no matter if the person said yes later on. No is a full sentence That’s also the whole point of his character, he doesn’t care about anyone but himself and he gaslights people left and right to make himself feel better In contrast, Tess’ choices were so idiotic but you can’t help to think of how nice this woman is because she always thought of everyone else before herself Ugh, I love the dynamic of this movie, it was so fun. It’s nice seeing a horror movie which doesn’t think itself seriously Your reactions were amazing 😂

L AH

One plot hole that bothered me a lot was, how did tess end up on top of the monster lady when they fell of the water tower? She fell first, that should be impossible right? Loved the movie though, the plot twists got me soooo hooked

Carolina M

Well said here!

I enjoyed the whole film, but I'm not gonna lie, I would've enjoyed it just as much if it continued the premise of Act 1. I'm so fascinated by Keith, is he a genuinely nice guy trying to help a stranger, is he a low-key creeper taking advantage of the situation (candles and wine??), is it just an innocent bit of mutual flirting, or is he a genius stalker who orchestrated this very convenient set-up (he just HAPPENS to be a member of the jazz band?) but obviously was unaware of the danger downstairs. They could've made a whole film about it and still kept the audience guessing.

Verity

Oh, yes. Lol people have justifiably divided opinions on this. I'm not a huge horror fan and set myself to only halfway pay attention when my husband put it on...but by five minutes in, I was intrigued and then, at the act change, invested. I LOVE the grind house kind of feel to this one...the subtle (and not so subtle) jabs about flawed perception over reality (even poking at the audience a good bit!!) The film style adjusted itself for every change in the story and we even got a fun fps perspective in the tunnels. I know some cringe at the brutality, sickness, perversion, etc...but I think it all works very well to ask...who is the monster here? Looking so forward to your thoughts!!

Jessi
