They are descendants of the original airbenders. There is no way all the airbenders were killed since they were nomadic. And we all know airbenders draw their bending from their spiritual energies, that’s why everyone was an airbender in their nation because of their extremely powerful spiritual connections. Many airbenders fleed and hid in the earth kingdom and the fire nation. They had to hide their bending. This weakened their spiritual connections, and this is why during Aang’s time after the iceberg generations later, he really is the last airbender. Harmonic convergence restored the deep latent spiritual connections within the descendants of those that hid, and this is why only airbenders started popping up, Bumi included.

I think if the portals stayed closed every bending would have disappeared the reason air went first was because it’s the most spiritually connected. Wan made a mistake like korra said by keeping portals open she bought balance to the world

2023-11-22 01:21:13 +0000 UTCMy thought was that only (or mostly only) airbenders were been "awakened" from the harmonic convergence as a means of balance. This means there is already a decent amount of benders for the other 3 elements so only the air nation was low on benders.
