EARLY ACCESS: Cabin in the Woods FULL REACTION

OCTOBER POLL WINNER: Cabin in the Woods is a film of paradoxes, offering both intriguing elements and perplexing choices. The ensemble cast, featuring Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, and Bradley Whitford, shines in their roles, infusing humor and depth into their characters. The blend of archetypal and subversive characterizations adds complexity and intrigue to the story.

On the positive side, the film's initial appearance as a standard horror movie is well-executed, drawing us into the seemingly typical story of friends on a remote cabin retreat. However, as it progresses, the narrative takes an unexpected turn, exploring the mechanics of horror storytelling. This unique approach offers a fresh perspective, challenging genre norms.

However, "Cabin in the Woods" is not without its drawbacks. Some may find the plot overly convoluted, with the constant twists potentially leading to confusion rather than engagement. The film teeters on the edge of chaos, leaving a portion of the audience feeling disoriented. The balancing act between horror, and comedy, leaves some torn between admiration for its ambition and frustration with its complexity.

We would still recommend this to anyone. This is one of those films you will either like it or you won't. What was your reaction to this film? Is there anything we might have overlooked?

The lawsuit was dismissed. The judge acknowledged that the trope of a bunch of teens getting killed in the woods was not enough. This film was a meta examination on horror films.

So much fun rewatching this movie. I’m a fan of the horror genre and it was so nice to see the homage to this genre, and all the references !!

This film is so much fun and has great comedy. I love that at first they are just doing the annoying horror films tropes but they answer why they act the way they do. I like that the characters really weren't just those stereotypes, Kurt wasn't a dumb jock, it feels like they only made Holden the scholar kinda of similar to Dana until much later, you didn't even see him wear glasses under he's reading the diary and the people downstairs clearly made Jules WAY to sexual, she didn't act that way at all until they got there but also it's creepy that they already had control over them since they changed her hair to blonde. I also really like these characters and genuinely feel bad when they die, a lot of the time I really don't care about them. And it's hilarious that the creepy gas station guy is just an actor that gets way too in character, like a method actor. Bradley Whitford & Richard Jenkins are hilarious together, you can tell they had a blast together, you can't fake laughing like that, lol. I really love that no matter how many times I watch it I always end up seeing something new, there is so much happening that you can't see everything in one viewing. And I love that most of the effects are real, not CGI, the merman was completely there. The effects team that did it all is run by Heather Langenkamp, who played Nancy in A Nightmare On Elm Street, I thought that was a fun fact. A film I would love to see you react to and it was made by this same director is Bad Times At The El Royale, I think it's brilliant. I won't give to much away but it's about a small group of people that all end up in a hotel over night and it takes place in the late 60's. And that's all I'm going to say, it's best to not know very much, including the cast, which is quite stacked.

Yeah, Grand Budapest Hotel seems most exemplary of Anderson’s work and style. A film he made after many others and years refining his craft and unique voice. Do you know the movie reaction channel, “Dawn Marie”? She watched Grand Budapest Hotel and had an amazing and hilarious reaction to it. Her first Wes Anderson film and she went in totally blind. Check it out, it’s a great video! https://youtu.be/edp5rhmTDCw?si=OxF9OAJMJPWZ_Mci

Also, I forgot to ask with the Coraline reaction, would/or will you guys be reacting to The Corpse Bride? To me that is the best Tim Burton. Or, my favorite of his. 😆 I love it so much. And of course, you guys may not, one never knows. Lol Totally fine! But I'd just love to watchalong with you guys!

As someone who loves horror (as in the kind that scares you and creeps you out) I've never been a fan of gore. And this is gore at its finest. 😆 So I was extremely disappointed when I first saw this. After rewatching later on I could enjoy it for what it was though, and recognized all the little "nods" it gave to horror etc. So it's definitely good for what it is. I just don't particularly care for it as a horror fan. For me I like my horror to be scary, not gross. And gorey horror is the most gross. 🤣 So, not a fave but don't think it's a bad movie. I also for some reason still like watching people react to it. Like Evil Dead. Another movie franchise I'm not a fan of because it's just all gore. But still something I occasionally return to, and I love the reactions for. 🤭🤭

This movie is like a love letter to the horror genre, with references to classic characters others have pointed out in the comments, and classic horror tropes (the creepy guy at the gas station, cabin in the woods, the "jock" the "nerd" the "stoner"). The parody and the clever twist made this movie such a pleasant surprise for me. About the end discussion— I somehow missed the similarities with Hunger Games 😆 That makes sense that they might have taken some inspiration from it. Thanks for watching this!

I've been waiting for some Wes Anderson reactions too! Grand Budapest Hotel is a fantastic entry point.

Still one of the best things in this movie is the whiteboard, one of the lines on the board is "Kevin", can just imagine Kevin Mccallister setting up killing traps :P

Yip - Its Friday night 🍿🍿time! Have a good weekend!

This was a super fun one to see in the cinema with a bunch of mates. But this reaction is a close second, it really is fun seeing other people watch this one!

As someone else said, the real fun of this movie is the homage to horror movies and tropes from the past. It does what Scream did in its original outing, but it takes it up to a whole other level. This one was always a fun one for me and I enjoy how it switches between taking itself seriously while also making fun of itself and the genre. It's been a while since I saw it so I'm glad to have an excuse to watch it again. I'm still hoping that ya'll will get a chance to throw a few extra horror movies in this month, and if so I *highly* recommend The Summer of '84 and Haunter. They're both really great horror movies with a special vibe that I don't think you cna get anywhere else.

Hey Badd Medicine?! Are you guys ever going to touch on the films of director Wes Anderson? Highly recommend you see his film “The Grand Budapest Hotel” This film and Wes Anderson’s work is like nothing you’ve seen before. It’d be very amusing to see your guys reaction to this unique film.

I saw a gif, years and years after, of the unicorn scene, and was like wtf, okay, I need to watch this cause huh, cause I just ignored the movie because at that point I was tired of zombie/hillbilly horror films lol and when I saw that that gif came from the movie, I had to know what was up. I like it's play on all the stereotypical horror tropes that is a staple in horror films, and the absurdity of it, but thats what the Gods wanted, so, lol. Also, the "easter egg" type throws of the monsters to also classic, well known horror icons ie: Hellraiser, Werewolves, Ghosts/Poltergeists, Clowns(Pennywise), The Masked People (The Strangers movie), Zombies, etc etc. Sigourney was a fun surprise, also, "bad ending" trophy lol. A fun movie that pokes at the horror genre, wish I had watched it sooner.

Great movie that was so unexpected during its release. The marketing team definitely did a good job at hiding the direction the movie was going to go. Also, I miss the ominous Lionsgate openings. Whenever I see that, I know I'm in for a good time.

This movie was completed and then shelved in like 2009. Then Thor blew up and they released it. The marketing for the movie was just a hillbilly slasher and it was a complete surprise. Just a great send up to rhe entire horror genre.

Eric Wallace

One of my all time favorites! It was such a surprising movie when it came out!
