EARLY ACCESS: One Piece 1x7 FULL REACTION

In the penultimate episode of One Piece, we FINALLY delve deeper into Nami's backstory, shedding light on her reasons for working with Arlong and her underlying plans. The reveal is skillfully executed, maintaining suspense until the very end of the episode. The narrative's shift between Nami's perspective and that of the Marines adds to the ongoing cat-and-mouse dynamic, which has been consistently engaging and really well crafted.

EARLY ACCESS: One Piece 1x7 FULL REACTION

Comments

It's pretty straightforward. They're emphasizing Nami's fear by having her push the people she loves away. It ties directly into her belief that she can't let herself make friends. In the case of Nojiko, it's Nami's way of protecting her sister. She believes that she's doing both her sister and the villagers at large a favor by letting them hate her. She doesn't WANT them to be in on her scheme because that increases the likelihood that they'll get hurt through her. Mind you, your comment and mine are both spoilery because they strongly hint at the alternate narrative from the manga/anime, so I'd prefer not to delve more than that.

Hit the nail on the head with the comment about how this series draws you in with the silly, often over-the-top slapstick humor on the one hand, before smashing you in the face with the emotional trauma. The anime follows exactly the same pattern. The thing about it is that while the core story of this live action follows the original very closely, there's enough difference in the details in the anime to make it hit a bit different in certain respects. This is especially true in Nami's case, because there's some slight but very meaningful differences in her backstory with her sister and the man with the scarred face. But what I REALLY love about the whole thing is how the writer tackles the reality of trauma. Nami is by no means a stupid or gullible woman. The manga and anime both present her as the most savvy and intelligent person of the crew. She knows damn well better than to trust someone like Arlong, and her experience with him made it hard for her to trust anyone in a more general context. But she clings to his promise that he'll honor their deal, because it's all she's got. She can't let herself believe he would renege on the deal because deep inside she's still Little Girl Nami with no other option.

This is the point where I got hooked on the manga. So far this has been quite good for an adaptation but I really question why they made Nojiko not know what Nami was doing? Also some future adaptation introduced plothole with Arlong wanting the map to the Grand Line.

Team Medium Rare lets go!

I’m glad you guys are enjoying ONE PIECE so far. Nami’s has a tragic backstory and loved it played out in live action. I look forward to season 3 where we get introduced to more crew mates one including a lovable character named chopper who in my opinion has one of the most sad backstories of all the straw hats.

Rylan

about luffy not being a lot in this episode. the anime/manga have such an insane story and worldbuilding that at times we dont see ANY of the strawhats for half a year (in our time) but the story keeps going and keeps giving.

One Piece Live action Season 1 covers Episode 1 - 46 out of the 1078 Ep from anime till date. So you can imagine how vast the One Piece world is going to be. definitely there are more seasons to come!

This episode really made me love the show, it went above my rating for the show. I was sold already on the first episode and at that time I was at a solid 4, episode 3 and 4 bumped me up to a 4.5 because I really liked the darker atmosphere they went for. Episode 5 and 6 bumped it up to 5, I loved Sanji's backstory and Mihawk, then this episode happened and that scene at the end with Nami happened and I was thinking, but I'm already at 5, it's 5+ now, I guess, also, I must find all the reactions now. Which is how I found your Patreon and I've been loving your reactions. Not just for this but also your Harry Potter reactions and some of the other movie reactions I've seen, as I'm slowly catching up on your past reactions, just watched Crazy, Stupid, Love, that was a fun reaction.

To what Oak said about the Grand Line map, being copyable, I originally assumed that because it was a military map, it would have more secrets on it such as military bases and special facilities not known to civilians. Which would explain why the map needed such a high level of security clearance.

romaiiiii

This show is on the level of the boys! Just amazing

(Dont read if you plan on watching the anime) Just about the only change from the original that I didn't like was that in the anime/manga Nojiko and the town knew that Nami was working for Arlong to save them. Nami knew Nojiko knew, but the town pretended to hate Nami because they wanted her to feel like she could leave Arlong if working for him got to be too much for her without feeling like she was abandoning them. When they found out Arlong stole the money, the town gathered to march on Arlong Park, despite knowing Arlong would kill them all. Nami tries to stop them, saying she'll save up the money again, but Genzo and the villagers tell her she's already sacrificed for them too much and leave for Arlong Park. That's when Nami asks Luffy to help her. I get why they had to change it for pacing and clarity, but I love that the villagers were also trying to protect Nami in their own way.

It's a little more clear in the anime/manga, but part of the reason Bellemere doesn't lie and say she was having guests over is because then Nojiko and Nami would have to leave the island or Arlong would find out he'd been lied to. So rather than risk him killing them in revenge or them having to leave there home, Bellemere sacrificed herself, knowing Genzo (who was more involved in the girls' lives in the original) would take care of the girls.

Yeah the reason the writing of the show was done so well is because one of the show runners, Matt Owens, is a HUGE One Piece fan and Oda was heavily involved. They say he approved everything before the show was green lit.

I love those lines of dialogue where Zeff compares the new generation to the Micqueot wine "perfectly aged, ready to be enjoyed. leave it too long and it'll go bad." but Garp responds with "Or you could just serve whiskey", which gets better with age.

I think One Piece is one of the greatest works of fiction ever written. The anime is intimidatingly long and can drag in some spots, but it is absolutely incredible. The show writers did a great job adapting Oda's story into a live action format. I don't usually cry, but man, One Piece has made me cry many times. It's a very serious and sometimes dark world disguised in campy characters and bright color. The creativity is absolutely incredible and it has so much heart. I highly recommend watching the anime scene where Nami asks for help. You'll see how much these actors absolutely killed it!

I would totally be here to see you guys react to the One Piece anime, the amount of tears I have shed over it and the many many beautiful and soul shattering stories Oda has written.

PrincessLittlePiddles

Would love to see you guys react to the Fear Street trilogy on Netflix which is where I first saw Emily Rudd (the actress who plays Nami) on screen.

So sorry for the long comment! The post discussion, specifically what the Oak is saying, is exactly how I felt when I started the anime back in 2021. I never expected to feel this way about a group of pirates. I've always been an anime fan, even when I was a child, but I could never commit to OP until my friend told me to try it out. I was working fulltime and finishing up my first year of my masters program and I somehow caught up to the anime in three months. I don't know how I did it, but I was completely hooked! The emotions the story brings forth is amazing. I don't know how many times I've cried from sadness, anger, and joy; the payoff for this series is insane. Something I loved about this live action is that they're being faithful to the manga/anime, but at the same time elevating the story. I'm grateful Oda, the creator of OP, was involved, but I'm equally grateful that the writers of the show are also massive fans. Thank you for taking the time to react to this amazing series β™₯️

I feel you guys on the wait for more. It sucks. But just a thought, if you dive into the anime up to almost the end of the east blue saga (I believe someone mentioned in the comments on an earlier episode how far), the wait for season 2 live action won't seem as long...just putting it out there :).....they really should put a warning at the beginning of the series, 'Warning: This story can be highly addictive.'

Deborah Grzelak

Nami's backstory and her "Help Me" scene is what many say is what hooks them into forever fans of One Piece. "I thought this was for kids!" Is a very common reaction.

Tina

The writer Oda is the greatest story teller of modern times (in my opinion) and in the manga/anime it is even a higher level of writing because he fits SO much into the story, with it including higher and higher pay-offs the further into the story one gets. The fact that this live action could properly convey the story so well that it gains new fans makes me so unbelievably happy. Thank you so much again for fitting these reactions in <3 <3 <3

Brynn Busalacchi

Oh wow! I can't remember seeing you guys this angry before πŸ˜† Arlong rly is a BAD villain 😑

Mone

I've never seen the anime but I'd be interested in watching them react to these!

JessTellsTales

I'm here for Quinn working in Lord of the Rings quotes at every opportunity. It never goes unappreciated ✊ I hope the finale gives Oak some relief from the emotional weight of this episode πŸ˜‚ Thanks for the awesome reaction, guys!

JessTellsTales

If you guys really enjoyed this show you will 100% love the Anime One Piece even more, I think you’d truly enjoy it.πŸ™Œ

You should definiteley react to Namiβ€˜s Help Me scene from the anime (posted on the official Crunchyroll YT channel). That scene was the one that hooked many people to the show, including Namiβ€˜s actress Emily. While youβ€˜re at it check out Zoro vs Mihawk (I recommend the remastered version which is also on YT). I think Zoroβ€˜s inner monologue made it more impactful than the LA version. Feel free to ask us for links so you donβ€˜t have to go through spoiler :)

I'm off work in 3 hours and I'm ready willing and able to watch these then!
