EARLY ACCESS: Barbie FULL REACTION

Barbie Directed by Greta Gerwig and written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, the film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie, a stereotypical doll who lives in Barbieland, a utopian society where all women are successful and confident. However, when she suffers an existential crisis, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery that takes her to the real world, where she meets new friends, challenges stereotypes, and learns to embrace her true self.

This had a stacked cast, with Robbie delivering as Barbie. She captures the innocence, optimism, and enthusiasm of the character, while also showing her vulnerability, confusion, and growth. Ryan Gosling is hilarious as Ken. He also has great chemistry with Robbie, as they play off each other’s comedic timing and contrasting personalities. Ryan Gosling we comedic timing is so underrated. A lot of what he did just with he actions and facial expressions were fantastic. The supporting cast is equally impressive, with America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Helen Mirren, and Will Ferrell adding some humor.

The film's visual aesthetics, including set design and cinematography, craft a vibrant and visually engaging world. Notably, the attention to detail in the set design, costumes, and visual effects is commendable. It's apparent that Greta Gerwig aimed to encompass a wide range of elements within the narrative. However, certain comedic moments come across as forced, particularly those involving Will Ferrell and some other moments in the film. These instances feel like they don't quite hit the mark in terms of humor for us. Additionally, the film explores various tones, which may lead to diverse opinions among viewers. Overall, not bad. We are looking forward to your thoughts and what your reaction was to Barbie.

But then that doesn’t apply to you then. Obviously you would understand since you used to be one. Men who have always been men would not understand. How would they? They never lived their life as one. I know this is a late response and not sure if you are still here.

I just gotta say, I love ur channel but Oaks breakdowns are always my favorties, such a great focus on what the movies/shows he watches actually try to say and even lookng at all the sides, I love him for that!

samuel Jakob

I think this movie was too political. And I know why they chose this acting style because it's about toys. I found the acting style cringe. But your reaction was fun to watch! The song of Ken was the highlight of this movie for me. I can understand why the people who have played with Barbie liked it a lot. And don't get me wrong I am not saying it's a bad movie. Just not my tased. But thanks for your reaction because I wanted to see it because it's so hyped up so that I can have my own opinion about it. So I was happy to see that you did this movie.

Thomas

I'm a trans man and I think I have to respectfully disagree with Katie who said that men can never fully understand what it's like to be a woman, bc for about the first 30 years of my life, I thought I was one, so I did go through everything that women go through and was treated like a woman and honestly I'm still treated like a woman. There's nothing wrong with being a woman, I'm just not one, but I do know what they go through and what it's like to have XX chromosomes. I try and use my firsthand experiences of womanhood to help my brothers and nephews understand what women go through and to understand them a little better, bc my brothers mean well and everything, but they can be a little bit like the opposite sex might as well be an alien species sometimes. This isn't to say all men are like that, but these two definitely can be, so they need someone to demystify women for them.

Fair analysis here 🤜🤛😁

Great reactions! Does seem to me that Barbie gave the majority of support and encouragement to women ( can appreciate the filmmakers' reasons ), but also had messages for men ( which Badd Medicine has mentioned and discussed also ). Interesting to me, was the line "Ken is me", which seems to me, expresses the sentiment that "Manhood is me" - that, what we each naturally are as men, inherently is ( and also adds to the diversity of ) the definition of manhood ( in contrast to having to conform to others' decisions about manhood in order to think of ourselves as men ). The ending where Barbieland's traditionally imposed/allowed Ken roles start to change, seems to me like some acknowledgement from the filmmakers that Barbieland wasn't ideal for everyone either ( Barbieland is a representation of a matriarchy ). I saw Barbie for the first time after its digital release, and it's much more satirical than what I anticipated based on Gerta Gerwig's previous Little Women! And those were for sure hard sucker punches on Zack Snyder's cut of Justice League and Pride & Prejudice ( BBC responds : https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Tvb-6hCWcfo )! I am a gay man - so I don't directly relate to many of the women's themes in Barbie - but I did relate to facing the patriarchy, and sometimes the much smaller matriarchy - because gay men have had to fight for more equality in both places too! For me, Barbie was not an immersive kind of film experience - but I did very much enjoy the movie in a different way that's hard to describe - somehow the overall movie felt very refreshing and energizing to me.

Haha no worries. It was a good comment to read🤙

Can't lie and say I wasn't nervous about watching four men react and perceive this movie because I for sure was lol. Many think it is anti-men when it is actually anti-patriarchy. The patriarchy may provide men with privileges but also suffering as we see through Ken. If this is "anti-men" the number of movies that could be seen as "anti-women" outnumber them. The movie is called Barbie, not Ken, and is geared towards her journey, so the movie is geared more towards women more on their struggles but it's one of the few movies that do that, especially recently, so I think it is good for young girls to have that to see. They can grow up and be a CEO or whatever they want and that those jobs are not limited to only men. I see your points when swapping America's speech to relate to men but don't feel it's right to take a speech and make it about men when it is about women. It feels a little dismissive to the struggles she is talking about (please do not take this as any disrespect! I do love you Oak and thoroughly enjoy your comments at the end of movies, I have a lot of respect for you) (Not saying that that was your intention like you mentioned!) In no way was the speech dismissing what men are expected to also do but again it is a moment for women. For both sides, it is certainly hard to look at it from an outside perspective. Men will never fully understand how it is to be a woman and their struggles and their "place" in society and vice versa. I feel everyone is expected to be a certain way and fit the "norm". Gillybean above said it well regarding America's speech. Women have expectations that men must meet to date them and vice versa as well. When it goes farther than personal preference it is an issue. The movie eventually arrives at what we should have always known, that Kens and Barbies are all in this together and should work together to empower each other. I have trouble converting my thoughts into words so hope this made sense. Not being dismissive of anything you said about men's struggles it is definitely an issue and not talked about enough. Men do need more resources. Keep up the good work! Also the end scene when she goes to her doctors appointment shows that she is now human and has genitals lol! Also I think the movie did so well was one they had amazing marketing for the movie. It had an amazing cast as well. And mainly because it was a huge nostalgia movie for lots of people. Though it did make way more in the box office than I thought it would. Harry Potter DH part 2 was WB highest grossing film for many years until now. I think HP deserves it over Barbie though.

Katie

I 2nd this!

Tron: Legacy is suuuuch a banger!

We are also in the process to utilize the new feature "collections" where we can house reactions by film series, tv, etc.

Badd Medicine

Yeah, but I watch you guys on the app on my phone and I don’t have access to the library there.

Ginger

I loved Barbie so much. I am waiting to rent it to watch aghain when it isn't $25 (that's like every patreon I sub to in a month!) but understand why they need to get it out ASAP. I look forward to watching it with them but wanted to say how IMPORTANT and Appreciated it is as a queer woman to see cishet men watch, listen, and comment on movies like this. You don't have to love it, you don't have to get it, but if it gives any person a little more empathy and compassion for anyone while laughing, it's on the side of good to me.

Jenna Woginrich

Exactly👏👏

Shanelle

Can I throw Tron: Legacy or Megamind out there for consideration?

Hayley K

YES thank you. This is one of the points that I always bring up when discussing feminism and patriarchy with anyone. Patriarcal societal expectations and structure and influence and harm everyone, even men!

I love this movie, and I always cry during the ending flashes of real life moments (this was my 3rd time watching it didn’t think I would cry…again). I think the reason this movie made 1B is because of how relatable it is. It hits on so many notes and does it well. Not everything hits. This movie had me in stitches at the beginning (through most of it honestly) and bawling my eyes out by the end.

We've compiled a reaction library in the pinned comments, providing convenient links to these posts for easier access. We acknowledge that Patreon might not offer the ideal setup. This has always been part of our process with new releases. 👍 hope this helps.

Badd Medicine

That’s a great question and a very valid one. As reactors, it’s important for us to be reacting to a combination of movies and shows that win the polls we put out here, but also reacting to popular movies and TV shows. For blockbuster movies like this, it’s essential for us to get to them as soon as possible when they are released. We have no way of knowing when the rental price will go down, or if the movie will ever be available to watch for free. For Patreon we also do early YouTube cut release here. It goes out in advance of its release on YouTube, so if you don’t watch the full reaction, you still get an early YouTube cut. -Oak

david baye

Why do you guys react to these movies when they still cost $25 to rent? Then the movie is buried in a lot of scrolling when the price finally comes down.

Ginger

Also wtf I love Matchbox 20 🤣

Jessie

This movie was giving me some serious Toy Story vibes i was not expecting. I know you guys mentioned that not all of you have seen those. Will you guys be watching those soon? Had a blast watching this with y'all!

Jessie

tbh im just happy its not a sequel or a remake that's doing so well! even if it is backed by a massive company... :/ but, still an original story, no cgi, great directing and set pieces. that's cool as hell. But you're valid in your opinion too.

GillyBean

Dw, I'd never think you guys would get mad, you're all far too chill for that. I really appreciate how you all always take the time to discuss through themes and messages. Makes me feel smarter just listening aha

GillyBean

All good. Definitely not mad at how it picked on the men or the women. Thought they tried to do it in a fun clever way. It almost had an old school comedy vibe if that makes sense.

Badd Medicine

To your exact points Oak, the movie uses Ryan Gosling’s Ken to showcase how patriarchy is harmful for everyone! The fact that you can go word for word to America’s speech is part of the message the movie is sending. The expectations for men that you have stated are also a result of the patriarchy, similar to the expectations for women. The patriarchy harms everyone, regardless of gender, and that is what the movie was showing.

Jash H

One more thing i swear ahaha. I promise i do love yall. But if some men get mad at how they feel like they were made fun of, the butt of the joke etc... that's how women have felt watching almost every other comedy movie ever. so maybe its just nice to switch it up occasionally

GillyBean

Love Oak and really appreciate his feelings on a lot of the messages here. But I do disagree on some aspects. Generally you are right, men are struggling with self image more than ever, and I really think we should do a lot more to help men with that and general mental health issues. Men are less likely to seek help/therapy etc and we need to work hard to normalise seeking help. But regarding the swapping what America said to relate to men doesn't quite fit. I'd read in to Male Power Fantasy if I were you, and see the disparity of expectations between men and women. Ideals for men are set by men. Ideals for women are also set by men. Obvs some women are a lot more cruel/picky over how a man should be, but generally that's a product of old values and internalised misogyny. I really hope I don't come off dismissive or patronising (just commenting seems like a risk as a woman, but I promise not from the guys on the channel, I'd trust em with my life aha... but other commenters) I just want to open up for discussion on the topics. Also side note, great movie to have as a tester on a date. If ur boyfriend gets mad, it's a red flag and you get outta there girl haha.

GillyBean

I'm not dismissing the message it's trying to portray, It's a decent movie with good lessons to have, I'm just not seeing how it is a billion-worthy hype.

Bunnie

It's because the message is meant to be easy enough for young girls to get. Sure it's outdated to us because we are older and have heard it before. But the young girls of today may not have.

GillyBean

I watched Place Beyond The Pines recently. It was great

Liam

One of the great things in this movie is the view of the negative effects on men in our culture. The fact that the song the Kens sing is "Push" which was misunderstood about a man abusing a woman, but the song was about a man dealing with a woman abusing him shows the movie is sympathetic to everyone. The movie definitely understands both the women's and mens side. Its an acknowledgement that the pressures on women create the negative world for both women and men. Ken saying "I'm a liberated man, I don't cry," is another example of them understanding both sides. Also, I'm Just Ken is just a gem of a song. Just a 10 out of 10 perfect

Eric Wallace

The fact that they didn't use any CGI either is fantastic!

Jeffri Boisvert

The movie is completely supportive of women *and* men. You see very much in the end with Barbie talking to Ken about finding out who *he* was regardless of the stuff put on him. Which Oak put a point on in his feedback!

Jeffri Boisvert

I'd like to add Place Beyond The Pines to that Gosling list - even though it's not really *his* film - because I think they'd get some good discussions out of its themes 👀

Verity

This is so true! It’s such a powerful theme in the movie, and a very surprising one. I hope you can find peace surrounding the relationship with your mother. I saw it for the first time with my mother, who’s 76, and I found all the mother/daughter moments to be extremely poignant but also very sad for me as she’s getting older. There really is so much to glean from this movie.

Courtney McAlexander

I honestly don't know why this movie is so overhyped. The message it's trying to deliver, I feel like it's a decade too late? I mean, there are other movies out there that have been conveying the same message. I think this would have been such a badass movie in the 90s although might not as well received as it did today. Just my 2 cents.

Bunnie

Ha classic, well just finished n honestly it feels like mentalities in places got huge grudges and i feel for them but i also feel for the non heated guys and gals out there trying to just enjoy a movie/art without the anger from the battling minds out there* All in all id recommend it but also give alil heads up. This reaction is a hoot* Gunna watch again tonight with very unaware bestfriend* reaction included. Well done Boyo's

Cojuancidence

I really liked you guys saying that this is the kind of movie everyone will get something different from. while I recognize the feminism aspect of the movie, what hit me the hardest was the mother-daughter theme. me still having a very difficult relationship with my mother, this felt really painful, especially Ruth's line: "We mothers stand still so that our daughters can look back and see how far they've come".

Alyssa Dyson

Hi guys! Was so excited to watch this reaction! I wanted to add something to Oak's discussion about how the plight that America's character vocalizes can be applied to men too. I'm sure as a man, this movie could make you feel a little defensive or make you feel like it's only saying that women have societal pressures but I think that's a misreading of the movie's true message. Yes, as the movie is called Barbie, it focuses on her growth/struggle specifically and thus focuses on women's struggles, but the movie is also trying to show how men suffer under the patriarchal system as well. Ken doesn't find society's definition of masculinity to be fulfilling at all. He's struggling as much as Barbie. There's been a lot of think pieces, articles that have been written since the movie came out that explain it way better than I ever could, but just wanted to mention that I think the movie IS focusing on both gender's struggles under the societal system of patriarchy. This is from one article I found: "This is the core of the film’s message to men: 'You matter, but not because of who you’re with or how much power you have. You matter because you’re you.' By the end of the film, the Kens embrace the slogan “I’m Kenough,”and Barbieland is made more equal in structure. The truth is that, in some ways, patriarchy can hurt men too. Being forced to suppress your feelings and embrace hobbies you don’t like to be a “man” can lead to feeling trapped, as depicted by Michael Cera’s Allen, who feels pressured to embrace the Kens’ hyper masculinity. While Barbie is chiefly a film about womanhood, it’s also a deeply moving film about what it means to be human."

Courtney McAlexander

My personal opinion on the movie is that it was really great but as some of you pointed out not all the comedic moments hit right. And goddamn if I didnt think Gosling didnt steal the show whenever he was on screen. I thought id throw in some movie suggestions starring Gosling that show some more depth to his acting. The movies would be Blue Valentine, Lars and the Real Girl and some more bigger famous movies would be La La Land, Bladerunner 2049 and Drive. Loved the reaction and all of your thougths on the movie!

pcjc

I had Mason Quinn's same reaction when I saw Will Ferrell's name show up. He's never the right choice. -_- :P

Jeffri Boisvert

I loved this movie because it was so nostalgic for me. (I’m 33) I went to see it with my mom and sister. Living in Austin Texas we went to Alamo drafthouse to see it and the pre show was hilarious showing us the evolution of the barbie dolls and all the different accessories… most of which my sister and I had. I had the barbie camper van and the pooping dog. It gave me the similar feels to when I rewatch Toy Story. Remembering how it was to play with all these different toys as a child. I agree that I the will Ferrell character seemed somewhat out of place with the rest of the movie. There were some fan theories that will Ferrells character is actually a ken doll as well. Which kinda explains some of his characteristics. On a rewatch that’s how I looked at his character and it fit for me and made it more tolerable. Other than that I really enjoyed the film. And I really loved sitting next to my mom and holding her hand at the end while tearing up.

Christina

Yeah.. expensive. I do think it comes to HBO soon.

Glad you shared with us 🤙

Badd Medicine

I grew up playing with Barbie. I am America Ferrera's age - kids today don't care about Barbie, it's nostalgia for Moms. This core fanbase also remembers that when we played Barbies as kids, Ken was a background accessory, as secondary as a car, Skipper, or a new outfit. I believe the movie spoke to the audience that grew up loving and playing with Barbies in their portrayal of Ken. There are so many complaints about adaptations being inaccurate to source material or not catering to the core loyal audience. This movie was so accurate to how America Ferrera's generation (the last to love Barbie) actually played with them but people that often criticize modern adaptations for straying from source material almost conspicuously avoid praising this movie for achieving that goal. That's not speaking to you guys specifically, but to the general tenor of online criticism of this movie. Thanks for reacting and allowing me to share my two cents!

"However, certain comedic moments come across as forced, particularly those involving Will Ferrell and some other moments in the film. These instances feel like they don't quite hit the mark in terms of humor for us." <-- This!!! I love Will Ferrell but I didn't feel like he had to be in this movie. I didn't enjoy any of his scenes. Will be watching this along with you this week-end. Also, this is the movie that made me fall in love with Ryan Gosling (I know, I'm late to the party). Now I need to watch la-la-land. I don't know if you saw it, but if you intend to react to it, I will wait, because I don't usually care much for musical comedies :) I might as well watch it with my Youtube buddies :P Have a good day! :)

Margot crushed it. And yes, you can bank on Oppenheimer happening here. 🤙

Badd Medicine

Can't disagree there. 🤜🤛

Badd Medicine

This was my second most anticipated movie after Oppenheimer this year. While it is a great movie, I think I overhyped myself and it ended up being a 7/10 movie whereas I wanted it to be a high 8 or 9 haha. I also thought the humor was forced a lot of times but all in all, what a fun movie to watch in theaters, with everyone dressing in pink. Margot is a star !! I do hope you guys will watch Oppenheimer. Definitely the better movie of the two for me, watching it in iMAX was just a once in a lifetime experience.

L AH

I can see how it feels that way! It hits on more than one big idea. Totally respectfully, I truly do think this a movie more women can relate to and see themselves in and have more of a connection with. 🙂
