EARLY ACCESS: Underworld FULL REACTION

Underworld ..... what a dark and enthralling world of supernatural warfare. Set in a gritty modern-day environment where vampires and werewolves, or lycans, are locked in a centuries-old feud, the film unfolds as an intense battle for supremacy.

Kate Beckinsale delivers a great performance as Selene, a fierce vampire warrior entangled in the conflict. Beckinsale's portrayal brings a perfect blend of vulnerability and strength to her character. The film's moody and gothic aesthetic adds to the atmosphere, creating an eerie backdrop that complements the intense action sequences.

Director Len Wiseman's vision presents a unique twist on the age-old vampire and werewolf mythology. The intricate plot weaves political intrigue, personal vendettas, and hidden agendas. The film's lore is developed well, providing a rich background for the ongoing battle between the two supernatural factions. The visual effects and action choreography were done well, with dynamic and brutal fights between vampires, werewolves, and even hybrids. Don't get us wrong, some spots of the acting and CGI were questionable, but still an entertaining film.

While the film's focus on action sometimes overshadows character depth and development, "Underworld" remains a compelling and adrenaline-fueled ride. Looking forward to the next one.

Apple TV has the “full” versions. Prime has done this with many movies and shows, they cut out quite a lot for no apparent reason. Lots of missing scenes that builds Michael and Selene’s relationship, but also some pretty important scenes of story building/Selene doing more research etc. The version I watched in Theatres when these came out, and have on DVD, were both the same. Prime just cuts everything for almost every show or movie that’s not an original. Back when Vikings was on Prime, they cut out LOADS of scenes that I guess they deemed “unimportant”. Such a shame for both. The real, longer version of Underworld makes much more sense 🥲

Yen Shively

As I originally saw this movie when I was 13 years old and it had Kate Beckinsale in leather leather kicking ass, the movie has a spot in my memory

Eric Wallace

thank you

Sam Harris

Even with all it's flaws, I really enjoy this film. You don't have a lot of Vampire/Werewolf action movies, and I like this one's vibe.

Com1xguy

The early 2000s goth nostalgia is strong...As a kid who was obsessed with Evanescence, this movie spoke to me 😅. Goddamn if Kate Beckinsale in black leather dual-wielding guns like Lara Croft wasn't the coolest thing ever.

Verity

Welcome and thank you for supporting us 😁🤙

Badd Medicine

side note: the reason you guys think the romance and relations progressed so quickly is because the version you rented had 20 to 25 min cut in total from it, most scenes related were conversations and arcs related to relationships between different characters (i.e. Selene and Michael, Erica and Craven and so on).

You guys got me on Patreon with Underworld. 😂 I love these movies. Fantasy monsters fascinate me so the lore on this one kept me watching. The origin story was interesting and done well. I really like that an older vampire can see everything in a person's life just from drinking their blood too. I do agree somewhat that the execution could've been better but the story was engaging so its a pass. 😍 I'm big on dark fantasies, especially vampires. So are some of the major players still working in Hollywood today. Almost all of them have some time in their life made a vampire movie or been in a show. 😍😂 Some of the best vamp movies I've seen: 1994 - Interview With A Vampire - Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Kirsten Dunst, Antonio Banderas, Christian Slater, Stephen Rea, & Thandie Newton. 1992 - Bram Stoker's Dracula - Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, Anthony Hopkins 2002- Blade 1 and 2 - Wesley Snipes, Kris Kristofferson, Stephen Dorff, Ron Perlman, Norman Reedus, Donnie Yen 2007 - 30 Days of Night - Josh Hartnet, Danny Houston, Mark Boone Scariest movie vamps for me. 2014 - Dracula Untold - Luke Evans, Charles Dance 2000 - Dracula 2000 - Gerald Butler, Jonny Miller, Omar Epps, Christopher Plummer 1996 - From Dusk Til Dawn - George Clooney, Harvey Keitel, Quentin Tarantino, Selma Hayek, Cheech Marin, Danny Trejo, Juliet Lewis 2004 - Van Helsing - Hugh Jackman, Kate Beckinsale, David Wenham Johnny Depp was in Dark Shadows and Nicolas Cage has been in 2 vampire movies! 😆 My point is, you guys should watch more monster movies! Vampires, Zombies, Demons, Werewolves, etc. 😁😍

Seelia Vachon

Oh, and Van Helsing with Hugh Jackman has the werewolf look that Oak is looking for. A lot of designs come off Ork-ish because they are making a human form with a beastly face, which is almost an exact definition of an Ork. You could also look into The Wolfman from 2010. Daybreakers with Ethan Hawke is a good unique vampire story. I recommend.

Kathryn Murders

Fun fact, Kate was almost NOT cast because prior to this movie she was not in any action films (she was primarily drama) and they were worried she couldn't sell the action. This films low budget led to many funny behind the scenes things, like when Viktor threw Michael through the wall it was Styrofoam blocks that if you pay attention are actually floating in the water instead of sinking. Many battle scenes are actually held in the same hallway, just redecorated. Despite it's flaws, I've always enjoyed this movie.

Kathryn Murders

Speaking of vampires. Did any of you guys see the Blade movies? Those are legendary. Well... the first 2 atleast.

Jakub C

They only get worse from here.

Justin Robertson

If you want to see the best wolf effects low budget , i think you guys would love Dog Soliders which is an british action horror ( 2001 ) The main characters are in game of thrones

Rob OnlyRoss

dang.. I only have access to the extended version xD Underworld is my favorite vampire lore, and who doesn't love Kate Beckinsale! I am surprised you didn't reference Davy Jones during the film

FatLittleButterfly

As I was watching, I kept thinking, "Wow, the guy playing Craven is so bad. Was he always this bad??" And then Oak voiced it at the end 😆 I was surprised to learn from you guys that it was low-budget. I thought it looked pretty good for the time 😅 but maybe nostalgia is making me too nice. Thanks for watching this former-goth-kid's classic 👍

Jessie

I'm with Oak on this one. Alot of the acting was bad. Story was good but predictable to me. I'm just glad there weren't any sparkly vampires or Abercrombie model werewolves in booty shorts. It was decent though. I'm sure they get better with budget increases. Also, would you guys consider watching the MTV Teen Wolf show? Blatant twilight rip off lol.

Ron Banks

Oh, and the character Erika (blonde girl) is Sophia Myles. I don't think you guys recognized her from anything, or you just didn't mention it. But she actually plays in one of my favorite films, Tristan & Isolde (2006) and I would love to see you guys react to that one day. It has a pretty great cast.

Sarah

I lived this reaction! It was so fun returning to Underworld and hearing your guys' thoughts. Oak's review kind of surprised me, but then did make sense. 😆 About some of the acting and the effects/makeup. I agree somewhat with him now in 2023, but I guess it was slightly surprising because I never thought about it in 2003 and I've seen it so many times now that those original views never really changed. But after watching the review I can see it a little. 🤭 I think with time it's more obvious or stands out but at its release it was amazing! Kraven I agree would be the weakest point. I absolutely love Viktor's character and when it released I was a simp for Selene and Michael's love story. Lol I am super excited for you guys to react to the second one, Evolution. That was the film that actually drew me in ALOT to this series. When it released I would literally rewatch it daily. 😆 I enjoy part one but part two is one of my favorite vampire/fantasy movies ever. And maybe you guys won't enjoy it the same as me and that's okay, but I will still love your reaction all the same! I loved that one so much that I had to immediately go buy the DVD and soundtrack. The music is one of my top favorite soundtracks from a movie. So I'm really hoping you love the score in that. I think that's one of my favorite aspects of part 2 actually. 🤭 If I remember correctly, I did enjoy part 3, Rise of The Lycans. It was decent but I only watched it once or twice so my memory of it isn't the best. I definitely am excited to do a rewatch and refresh my thoughts on it. But parts 4 & 5, Awakening & Blood Wars, I definitely recall not enjoying as much. They felt a little generic at times. If that's the right way to describe it. But I also haven't seen them since they released, and only the one time. So I'm hopeful to see if my opinion has improved after rewatching. I never rewatched them so that should already show that they weren't a favorite. 🤣 But I'm hopeful I'll enjoy them more this time and maybe change my opinion a little. Who knows! Anyways, sorry this was such a long-winded comment. Just super excited for this series so I kind of wanted to share my thoughts on it since you're starting! Can't wait for the second one! Also, in 2011 they released Underworld: Endless War. It's 3 anime short stories. I actually never watched it. Not sure if you guys will check that out, but I'm thinking I will finally check it out now. It's the perfect time to see what it is since you guys are reacting!

Sarah

Love this movie so much! One of my favorites in the vampire/werewolf genre

MJ

I did the same thing but then switched to the one they had, but I’m interested now in the scenes you mentioned.

Victoria Davis

I was wondering why you guys were talking about the Prison Break actor while I had the Lycan scientist on screen when I realized I had the extended version while you guys were watching the regular one haha. I’ve seen this movie several times but it was my first time watching the extended version and we got several more scenes, especially one scene with Selene and Michael talking about what happened to their family, that was really interesting (and might explain why she was crying after chaining Michael to the chair), one additional scene with Kraven with the blond vampire before Selene comes back in the coven, more backstory about the Hungarian ancestor and Michael, a kiss scene between Selene and Michael while Lucian was watching ...

L AH

Yaaaaay I couldn't wait for this to drop. This movie is one of the top vampire films for me

Ana

Based on your reaction to this, I think you guys would really enjoy Dog Soldiers. It's a werewolf movie that came out the year before this did. Even more low budget but it works.

Stephanie Bedworth

So fun facts time, the Lycans in this series were designed by Patrick Tatopoulos who is most well known for designing the western version of Godzilla [Zilla as most call her] from the 1998 film. Even Matthew Broderick's surname in the movie is Tatopoulos after the Production Designer. Patrick Tatopoulos also directed the third movie in the Underworld franchise. Honestly think getting werewolves to look cool is really hard, and this series has one of the more unique looks compared to like the movie Van Helsing with Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale that they were more traditionally wolf-like in design. Another movie you guys should watch maybe between Underworld films! I think what makes the Lycans different is they have a lot more feline in the features than canine, so they look almost closer to a lion than a wolf. They also didn't want to do a ton of work building the body structure and then just have it all vanish once you put fur on top of it and then film it on a dark set. Here's a link to some of the suit creation which is really neat: https://monsterlegacy.net/2013/03/09/monster-gallery-underworld-2003/

Alex Boatman

Here's a link to watch them all on - they're in the wayback machine if it helps... :) https://archive.org/details/underworld-2003/Underworld(2003).mp4

Sam Harris

Badd Medicine

Oh really?

Badd Medicine

Let's goooooooooo 😁🤜🤛

Badd Medicine

FINALLY! Omg love these movies. They definitely aren’t the BEST movies I’ve ever seen but as far as vamp/werewolf movies go they’re in my top 3! The third movie in this series is honestly my favorite so i can’t wait for you guys to watch that one but the franchise is honestly worth watching over all, especially after twilight haha- these movies are twilight's hot older cousin haha

Yenni Huynh

You def should've watched this before Twilight lol - this is a million times better imo Priest with Paul Bettany and Carl Urban, is a Marvel vampire one and 30 days of night with Josh Hartnett is good as well, comic book based too. But I love Underworld, enjoying the reaction so far lol just had to say about Twilight...haha

SilverDoe🎔

really annoying i cant watch it, prime sais its unavailable in uk

Sam Harris

Yep, you can get it on DVD, and I think maybe the BluRay, but I don’t think it ever went digital. It was 12 minutes longer, most of the new stuff is character stuff, but I really liked the added characterizations. https://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=5059467 is where you can read about the extra things added.

Jeff Long

this was every 12 year old's favorite franchise including myself. the michael sheen prequel is a banger

tom

There's an extended edition????

Badd Medicine

Okay! I’m ready! One of my favs! But I still love Twilight more!!! 🧛‍♂️

Shirlene Wright

One of my fav underrated vampire movies another great vampire movie is dracula untold

Marquis keel

It's been YEARS since I've watched the first Underworld movie haha. I always caught the sequels before I cut cable but haven't seen the first one in a long ass time, will be a great watch for after work! If you want to keep on the same train of Vampire Society I'd reccomend Daybreakers you you havent seen it! It has Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Sam Neill in it!

Shane Kolaga

Popcorn time! So looking forward to this one. The books by Greg Cox are good too.

SilverDoe🎔

I hate that the last one did so poorly at the box office that it killed the franchise. I’d love for even just one more movie to wrap it all up.

Jeff Long

The Extended Edition actually does quite a bit of work with adding extra character depth, which I really appreciated, i just wish that version was as widely circulated as the theatrical cut is on digital

Jeff Long

Let's gooo! First watch for me and just picked up some brunch, I'm so so excited for Wandavision and more boys this week 🍿 👊

Ryan Bellefleur

oh my goshh what a pleasant surprise! this is my favorite vampire movie series of all time!!
