EARLY ACCESS: The Nice Guys FULL REACTION

"The Nice Guys" is a rollicking comedic caper that offers a refreshing and hilarious take on the buddy cop genre. Set against the backdrop of 1970s Los Angeles, the film follows mismatched private investigators Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) as they reluctantly team up to solve a tangled web of mysteries. These 2 crushed this by the way.

Gosling and Crowe's chemistry is undeniable, creating a dynamic duo that perfectly balances humor with heart. Gosling's portrayal of the bumbling yet endearing March elicits non-stop laughter, while Crowe's tough and no-nonsense Healy provides the perfect foil. Their banter is sharp and witty which made this movie what it is.

Director Shane Black's signature style shines through with rapid-fire dialogue, clever plot twists, and a backdrop of retro aesthetics. The film cleverly navigates through a labyrinth of intrigue, conspiracy, and absurdity, all while maintaining a lighthearted and irreverent tone. The supporting cast, including Angourie Rice as March's whip-smart daughter, adds depth and charm to the narrative. The '70s setting is a character in itself, complete with disco balls, polyester suits, and vintage cars. The period details are meticulously crafted, immersing the audience in a world of nostalgia while providing a unique backdrop for the comedic chaos.

This was a breath of fresh air. This is a fantastic film here.

MEH… crap! This was not a hit to me… this was a BIG MISS!

Grandma’s4GreatReacts

To reiterate everyone else, watch Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Shane Black crushes buddy comedies. I mean he wrote Lethal Weapon 1 and 2. Guys got it going on.

Eric Wallace

I was hoping people would mention Kiss Kiss Bang Bang here. It's so fun.

JessTellsTales

I forgot how fun this movie was. Like a few have mentioned, I hope you guys do get around to watching Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with RDJ and Val Kilmer. Early on, Nice Guys was marketed as a sequel to it and it has the same vibe and murder mystery theme. Somehow neither of them did amazing box office-wise. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was always my favorite but Russel Crow and Gosling are so great here. Thanks for the movie night!

Jessie

Also these types of movies that are original stories just don't do well in general

Camity

I think there were a lot of reasons this movie flopped in the box office. Russell Crow is a great actor but he isn't really a box office draw. Ryan Gosling is a draw especially for the ladies but this movie isn't really for that demographic. It's also R rated that might've been a problem. I think this movie would've done really well if it came around 2018 or later because Gosling definitely would've been a big draw for this specific demographic after being in Blade Runner.

Camity

To answer y'all's question about why RDJ was there, as Braden mentioned you gotta check out Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. It's a great movie with RDJ and Val Kilmer written and directed by Shane Black, and as I said in a reply above, super similar tone/vibe. But, Shane Black also did Iron Man 3, so yep, he and RDJ are (or at least were; I assume they haven't had a falling out but you never know) tight so he was doing a favor for the dude who essentially saved his career with KKBB.

Jeff K

Yep. Suuuuuuuuper similar buddy comedy movie, and the film that basically saved Robert Downey Jr's career. Without that movie, I wonder if he would have gotten Iron Man, since he was Hollywood poison before Shane Black put him in that movie. And of course, the last great Val Kilmer performance before his cancer took hold and basically ended his career (I know he has made a couple appearances but you know what I mean).

Jeff K

Check out Kiss Kiss Bang Bang if you enjoyed this one.

Braden

I could happily watch this movie everyday, it’s just so good

gnarlywitch

Noir is my fav genre. Seen this prob 5 times. Great movie.

Justin Robertson

I usually wait for the YouTube cuts because of time constraints, but for this one I think I need to make an exception, especially since it's been too long since my last watch. What a great movie.
