EARLY ACCESS: Galaxy Quest FULL REACTION

This was FUN!!!!!! Galaxy Quest is a delightful and ingenious sci-fi comedy that pays homage to classic science fiction while cleverly satirizing the conventions of the genre. The plot centers around a group of washed-up actors who once starred in a cult TV show called "Galaxy Quest," portraying heroic space explorers. However, years later, they find themselves struggling to find work and living off their past glories at fan conventions. Unbeknownst to them, a group of real extraterrestrial beings, the Thermians, have been watching their show and have mistaken it for historical documents, believing the actors to be genuine space heroes.

Led by Tim Allen as the egotistical but ultimately endearing Jason Nesmith, the actors fully embrace their roles within roles. Sigourney Weaver shines as Gwen DeMarco, the sole female cast member whose only job is to repeat the ship's computer and look good in tight outfits. Alan Rickman, in a brilliant performance, plays Alexander Dane, a classically trained actor who despises his catchphrase "By Grabthar's hammer!" The entire ensemble delivers impeccable comedic timing, elevating the film beyond a simple parody.

This had been something I wanted to see for around 15 years since a friend mentioned the movie to me back then, and I finally got around to it! 😅 This was fun. Great casting, I especially love Alan Rickman. The guys who plays the main alien played Veronica's dad in Veronica Mars, a great show by the way that you could react to. It's in theory a teen investigation show but it has depth, and great witty writing. 3 seasons + a film + a season made about a decade after the end of the show.

Alan was great here. Miss him.

This was so fun and I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Such a great movie. I still miss Alan Rickman :( but he lives on through his work. Thank you!

Heathwitch

I 100% agree with this, would love to see a reaction to the never surrender documentary it's one of the best behind the scenes docs I've seen. Worth it just to hear the Alan Rickman story about making fun of Tim Allen experiencing acting and the story of how they came up with the alien voices and mannerisms

One thing Galaxy Quest directly references and parodies from Star Trek, is that sometimes characters talk long & intensely about very complicated and confusing sc-fi science problems and technology solutions. I imagine the science & technology dialogue in the show can cause anxiety to viewers who may feel that people have to understand those conversations. I'm a long-time Star Trek fan, and I can say that it's competely okay to not know what they're talking about. I usually don't understand the sci-fi science & technology conversations either, and just enjoy the stories. I think Star Trek does this because it wants to show how science and technology is important for operating real-life airplanes, sea-ships & space-stations - and the show often loosely bases its inventions on some real science. But for me, it has never been necessary to understand or make-sense of the show's sci-fi science & technology conversations. For me, the best part of Star Trek has always been the stories about the characters - and the way the show uses these stories to talk about our world.

This was such a fun ride with you guys! Glad you truly enjoyed it in the end because yeah i agree its definitely a wholesome film and it will make you laugh every time haha. Thanks again for the content! This was great =]

Absolutely loved this film when I was younger and still love it today - a series I think you'd love if you like sci-fy is The Orville. Seth McFarlane made a fantastic series and I love how it wasn't just wall to wall laughs - gets super emotional and serious as well. Great reaction as usual :)

Amberjoy

So typically for me I'm not really a sci-fy fan, there are some movies I do like and I get why they are beloved but they are usually not for me. However I absolutely love this movie, it's just a clever and funny idea. There's not that many movies that has the actors playing actors and showing you behind the curtain. And the midst of all the comedy they are somehow able to add some genuine emotional moments like when Jason tells the truth about who they really are or the other aliens suffocating or even finding out that most of their population is dead. They are definitely joking a little bit at the genre but also it's a love letter to it at the same time, it's the perfect mix. But you have to give it up to the actors/actress playing the aliens, they fully committed to their roles, I love that you can tell they are trying to walk like them but are still learning how and same with clapping and laughing, it is just so funny and they are always in character. But for me Sam Rockwell stole the show, he killed it in every scene he was in, I love his scream when first getting there, his breakdown going to the planet and I love that he's kind of the voice for the audience. And I love the idea for his character. He is such an underrated actor. Some fun facts: Tony Shalob's character was suppose to be high all the time and that's why he's always so calm but after changing the rating to PG they had to cut it and just imply that's what's happening. And if you see her mouth during that big hammer maze or whatever it's called Gwen actually says the f word but again it now was PG so they dubbed it to forget it but you can clearly tell she did not say that, lol. The casting loved the actor who played Tommy (sorry can't remember his real name) but the only problem was he was too young to play against the much older cast so that's why they had his character originally be a child and now he's grown up. And speaking of that actor, you might remember him as the cool/funny teacher Mr. Morgan from 10 Things I Hate About You.

Sam Rockwell’s character was an inside reference to Guy Vardaman. He worked as a stand-in and sometimes red-shirt in the original Star Trek. He was told there would be a little something in Galaxy Quest that called back to him. He expected some little quip that only he would notice. Not a whole character that even had his name!

Love this movie, it's one of the films that I grew up watching during family nights; we almost always ended up watching A Knight's Tale, Galaxy Quest, or I forced everyone to watch Dragonheart.

Alex Boatman

Seriously one of my faves I was 11 when this came out and watched it a lot. my dad was also a huge fan of Star Trek and I would watch eps with him I grew to love it as well.

Victoria Davis

This was an awesome watch with you guys, I remember in either a video or stream this movie came up for a second and I waited for the reaction since. LOVE IT

So glad you enjoyed one of my all time favorite movies! I would LOVE it if you’d react to “Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary” in a follow up to this, even if it is Patreon Exclusive. I think you’d really enjoy it. Reacting to it soon while the movie is still fresh is my recommendation. If you don’t do a react to it, I understand, but I suggest checking it out on your own at the least. You can find it on Amazon Prime.

Jessica

One of my favourite movies, it’s just so funny. “Is there air out there, you don’t know” the entire cast is brilliant but Sam Rockwell steals every scene he’s in.

Dannielle

Subjectively, my interpretation is that : Sigourney Weaver - is partially a reference to : Uhura ( Star Trek: The Original Series 1966 - 1969 ) - the communications person who was always relaying messages Alan Rickman - is partially a reference to : Worf ( Star Trek: The Next Generation 1987 - 1994 ) - the alien with his own intense traditions Daryl Mitchell ( the pilot ) - is partially a reference to : Wesley ( Star Trek: The Next Generation 1987 - 1994 ) - the young prodigy on the ship ( this is Gordie from "Stand by Me" 1986 ) And Sam Rockwell was of course a red-shirt ( Star Trek: The Original Series 1966 - 1969 ) as Mason Quinn mentioned

Jay

Galaxy Quest is for sure based on old Star Trek ! I see Mason Quinn is already familiar ! If The Oak ever watches more old Star Trek, you'll see many more of the elements that Galaxy Quest was inspired by and affectionately parody-ing ! Galaxy Quest director Dean Parisot said : "Part of the mission for me was to make a great 'Star Trek' episode." & "I was a huge "Star Trek" fan." ( source : https://www.mtv.com/news/uoge5x/galaxy-quest-oral-history ) !

Jay

I had so much fun watching this with you guys. I laughed so hard at your reactions. If felt like watching a good movie with my buddies. Thanks for that!

KarySky

Oh my gosh, this is one of my favorite comedies of all time. Clicking play ! So excited :)

KarySky

This reminds me of Mars Attacks lol

Skrilla7777

This was one of my dad's favorite movies and I remember as a kid this is the first time I'd ever seen Alan Rickman, so when the first Harry Potter movie came out I remember thinking as a kid "hey that's the guy from galaxy quest" 😂

AHHHHHH ONE OF MY FAVES 🤣 Such a great reaction- a BLAST watching and laughing with y’all 🎉

Angelina

So a sequel was in the works But when Alan Rickman passed away no one felt right about doing the sequel without him so it was scrapped. Im so happy you loved the movie! I knew y’all would!

Christina

I LOVE this movie, and you guys laughing made me laugh even harder lol. Seriously underrated. If you haven't seen it, Zarthura is a fun film involving space adventures. It's sort of a sequel to Jumanji, in that, it follows up Jumanji in the book series (same author), and is another underrated gem. Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, and The Next Level is also really good, and loved how they tied it to the first Jumanji. the whole franchise is just great.

Ok last comment (other than suggesting anyone who loves this movie seek out the oral history, it's a fantastic read -- just google "Galaxy Quest oral history" and it'll pop up): they've been trying to get a TV series off the ground for *years* for this show, with people like Paul Scheer and Simon Pegg at different times being attached or rumored to be involved on the writing side (and since they're both comedians and actors, presumably they would have been in the show too). But as of this past April, it looks like one might finally be coming, as Paramount+ is in the early stages of development (which also explains why this movie is streaming on Paramount+).

Decades ago I went to a convention for the TV show The Highlander. There can be only one! It was in DC for a few days. By Grabthar’s Hammer those guys know how to party!

Shirlene Wright

I’ve watched this movie so many times, how have I only just now noticed that the late Sam Lloyd, who played Ted the sad-sack lawyer on Scrubs (and who was also Christopher Lloyd’s nephew) is one of the Thermians? The moment when Rickman stands up to go tackle the alien soldier after Quellek dies, I was like, “Wait that guy next to him looks like Sam Lloyd”… and a quick Google confirms, yep, that was him.

Jeff K

Yessss can't wait till I get home to watch this. My favorite movie of all time

Haughtbreaker Nic

Obligatory mention of the fact that they polled people at a Star Trek convention once on their favorite Trek movies of all-time, and even Trek fans voted it, I believe, the 7th best Trek movie ever. The cast of Trek pretty much universally loves it, too. George Takei said it was almost like a documentary.

Jeff K

mmmmmmmmmmmnnnnnn-you are our last hope*

Cojuancidence

Hey man was just wondering, have you thought of watching one series so you can release reactions for it quicker rather than doing a bunch of them? Just a thought :) love your content regardless 🍻

Perfect Timing! This Friday is dragging! Galaxy Quest is one of my all time Favs! Gonna really enjoy this one! THANK YOU!
