EARLY ACCESS: Godzilla (2014) FULL REACTION

The 2014 film Godzilla definitely had its ups and downs. On one hand, the special effects and action sequences were simply stunning - the iconic monster looked absolutely incredible on screen, and the scenes of destruction and chaos were breathtakingly realistic. Additionally, the film had a excellent cast of talented actors, including Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Vera Farmiga, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson and more. All delivered great performances.

However, on the downside, the film was a bit slow-moving at times, with lengthy exposition and while it was great to see a more fleshed-out storyline, it could have been executed with a bit more finesse. A little disappointed by the limited screen time given to Godzilla himself, as the film often focused more on the human characters, which is great, but it felt it need more of the monster himself, Godzilla.

Overall, while Godzilla had its flaws in our opinion, it was still entertaining and an impressive spectacle that delivered some truly thrilling moments. This was probably best to be seen in theaters. Looking forward to the next installment.

EARLY ACCESS: Godzilla (2014) FULL REACTION

Comments

I know this isi late to the party but just decided to watch the monster films along with you. I saw this in the theaters when it came out and I was stoked. I visited Japan a lot in the 90's and grew up watching the Godzilla cartoon. Godzilla isn't the monster, the story really is, he's the Earths protector from other monsters as well from humans doing monstrous things to the earth. And this is just a set up for the other films to come so going in, i didn't expect to see a lot of Godzilla or a film full of "fight scenes'. I thought we got exactly the amount we needed to tell the story and get the ball rolling on what was to come with the other films. I liked this way more than that awful 98' or whenever it was version. That one completely missed the point on what Godzilla really is. Originally the character was created in Japan and was "awoken" by nuclear radiation etc. First Godzilla was considered a metaphor for the United States after Japan attacking Pearl Harbor. Japan awoken the beast. However in other stories they made Godzilla more of a protector of earth from all horrible threats like nuclear war, other monsters etc. Which this movie and series seems to lean towards, which are the stories I liked as a kid anyway.. So yeah I enjoyed this one very much.

Honestly, I love this movie. Its not perfect, I give it a 6 or a 7. But it's a fun watch. But to Oak's point of the fights feeling slow and Godzilla being really slow even though he's got the same sort of muscle structure, there's actually a bit of science to that. Don't quote me, I'm not 100% on this but I'm pretty sure it's a matter of perspective. From Godzilla's point of view, he's moving normal speed. But to us it seems really slow. It's like with us, we move normally, but to an ant our movements would be really slow.

JMac

this movie got a lot of crap but i really like it, its not perfect but the halo jump scene is amazing, it just needed more with Ken Watanabe and godzilla also should watch the How it should have ended for this one, superman getting ticked off over everyone cheering for godzilla is awesome

Rasgriz Rising

Oh that must have upset a handful of people thinking that he was going to be a part of it long term potentially.

Badd Medicine

Ok great. I didn't see it on May arrivals, but since it's next week, that makes total sense. They did well with the trailers because it made it seem Byran Cranston was a huge part of it lol.

Do Not Talk About Fight Club

That happens next week since we are doing the monster verse 😁🤙 and agreed... Seeing Byran go quick was not expected at all.

Badd Medicine

I really like how this one was shot, it really made the monsters feel massive and have weight, a bit like the first Pacific Rim. This is a series I haven't watched so I hope the rest are good.

Mintteacup

Great suggestion, I can imagine the lessons Oak will get from this xD

Mintteacup

Guess I’m in the minority, I liked it just fine. But if you’re into seeing more of the monsters, you’ll love the future installments!

Tessa M

I saw this opening day. Was so excited to see Brian Cranston. And what felt like 10 minutes later, he was gone. Anyway if you guys are doing the monster verse , you might have to put 2017 Skull Island in there. Or you might be confused during the 2021 movie.

Do Not Talk About Fight Club

The teasing of seeing the monsters and the fighting was definitely the main criticism when this movie came out.

Saynt Michael

I just remembered from one of your comments at the end. If you want a movie with a pretty crazy surprise cast of background or secondary characters, watch The Devil All the Time. The main character is Tom Holland but the story it weaves is full of some pretty big name actors you wouldn't even expect to be playing these parts. It's also just an amazing movie

Marco Gutierrez

You know, I'm glad you guys weren't blown away by this one either. I've never been the biggest fan of monster movies so I figured I was just being a grinch about it, but I just could not summon any interest in the movie. I only really watched it because you guys were watching it. I agree with Mason Quinn: on paper, these movies should appeal to me, but in reality giant monsters and robots never really grab my attention. Pacific Rim is the one exception lol.

Marco Gutierrez

They just announced a new Godzilla movie today. Also, did anyone hear about the twilight TV reboot? Also announced today...smh

Funny you guys just dropped this the same day they announced the title and a glimpse of the new Monsterverse film coming in 2024!

I was 14 when this came out and let me tell ya, it was the best thing I'd ever seen. I was and still am so in love with the tone and cinematography for thisfilm. I admit, now watching as a 23 year old I am less impressed by the script for Ford lol and I never noticed that they kept teasing us with the fight scenes until you guys said something! But overall i think it's still holds up as an entertaining movie. I cant wait for Skull Island!

Hayley K

I like the ‘98 version, but I’ll admit that I was 11 & easily impressed lol. I agree with your ratings on this though, I enjoyed seeing the monsters, when we got them, but unfortunately it didn’t hit the way I had hoped either.

Dee

Also yes, the MUTO was created specifically for the film, it doesn't exist in the original lineup of Kaijus, but is now and you'll see them again, as well as some of the OG kaiju lineup. Also Gojira is the og name in Japan, Godzilla is the English translation of that, which is why they had both pronunciations in the film depending on who was talking (ie the Americans calling it Godzilla after awhile and Serizawa continuing with its original name Gojira)

Anza

The way the film is set up, is similar to how his films usually go, while whatever Kaiju/alien/mecha was rampaging, it was humans first trying to deal with it before the "call" was made to summon Godzilla, then you had scenes of him walking/swimming/whatever before the epic showdown and then poofing back to the ocean. Or Godzilla fight first, struggle and/or defeated, then another of the kaiju shows up to team with Godzilla to defeat the enemy. But yeah, lol, there are a lot more Godzilla movies that feature Godzilla so much less then this. The build up is what makes his final arrival 👌

Anza

Woah did not know that! Totally agree with the small glimpses of Godzilla just rampaging through the cities and feeling his presence until the final battle was goosebumps-worthy.

Trigon

😁😁🤙🤙

Badd Medicine

I think you guys might come around to this one in the end. Its gonna be a fun journey watching with you guys. 🙌

Trigon

Hey Dillon. Some missed connections for us unfortunately. But, we are looking forward to the monster verse story here and how they will end up. 😁🤙

Badd Medicine

🤘🤘🤘🤘

Badd Medicine

Woah your rating for this is suprising! Imo this one was way better than the other two movies in the "monsterverse". Can not wait for the other movie reactions, its going to be a fun discussion. 🤙

Trigon

I grew up watching the classic rubber suit Godzilla movies, my dad was a big garage sale person and he found someone selling all the VHS tapes (japanese with English subtitles) for an outrageously cheap price and he didn't know anything about it but it was like a big dinosaur (I loved animals and dinosaurs as a kid) so he snagged it. I loved watching those films growing up and am so invested in godzilla still haha. A lot of the older ones are cheesy/pretty bad but after doing the Monsterverse movies it might be good to do the Original Godzilla (it's not just a movie with a giant monster). This one is OKAY, but the sequel to this one Godzilla King of the Monsters (KOTM for short) is GREAT. Look forward to watching along with you guys after work!

Shane Kolaga

Losing Bryan Cranston that fast was really unexpected 😂😂😂

Badd Medicine

The monster verse! Yes, hopefully we get the order correct 😂

Badd Medicine

Haven't heard of it. We can look into it🤙

Godzilla. I have fond memories of, as a child up into even now, I would stay up late with my dad and we would watch those marathon runs on TMC "After Dark" and we would watch all sorts of old classics, but Godzilla, and to include further, the rest of the Kaiju universe, fillm nights were my absolute favorite. I've enjoyed all the iterations(yes even the matthew broderick one and its spin off tv show, lol) I absolutely loved the build up and small teases through the movie before that final, full reveal of Godzilla. Gave me goosebumps that first time. Did not expect at all we would lose Byran C. So fast at all, I remember being like omg really!? In theaters lol. I haven't watched your react yet, about to do that now, just wanted to gush on how much Godzilla was a big part of my life, even now, especially with the films being a big thing me and father bonded over. Also just an aside, cause your thought on Godzillas screentime is a sentiment that a lot of people made, (and ironically the exact opposite was said about the sequel with TOO much kaiju and not enough human development lol) but honestly Godzilla never had HUGE screentime in any of the films, except for maybe 1 or 2 specific films. I think the lowest screen time was like 10 minutes or less of Godzilla, to the highest screen time of like, 25-30 minutes. I think its just because of how much Godzilla made such an impression on us, we remember "more" of him, if that makes sense lol. But he was the savior at the end of the fight when humans, or other Kaiju, couldn't do it. (Or even our enemy at times) Ok, off to watch!

Anza

I was thinking about this movie when they were putting out HTTYD 1-3. It is another solid movie. Same with Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, with none other than Matt Damon... the crew's favorite villain, hehehe.

Culper (Lukas)

are you guys going to watch Kong before King of the Monsters?

Curtis Rice

Idk if you guys have seen this one but if you haven’t you should check out Brother bear (2003) it’s a pretty underrated movie but it deserves more attention imo anyways thanks for the great content 👍

I asked and you delivered! You guys rock
