It's worse in the book where Artax can actually talk 😔

This movie traumatized me as a child because of a certain scene ...

I am so with the oak's energy watching this movie. I think if you view this movie about Bastian's grief after the loss of his mother. As u_mike mentions, this story is only half of the book but that is the running theme. I really recommend the book also. But that's why the whole idea of shutting down and trying to move forward was the bad thing here. Bastian had to walk through some steps of healing as Areyu. He is grieving but like his dad, trying to push the memory of his mom and the pain away focusing on work and grounding himself but doing so brings in emptiness and the nothing. He's pushing through depression in the swamp and numb indifference with Morla. He is trying to find himself again. Even the "wench" reminding him that "it has to hurt if it is to heal". Fighting the wolf who wants to control him. I even think that Atreyu being required to leave everything behind at the start is referencing that he has to start vulnerable and stripped down. Armor and weapons aren't what he needs for this. All done so that Bastian can finally loudly claim his mother at the end. The nothing stops when he can give the Empress his mother's name who will rule over fantasia. No longer boxed away his mother is welcome, upfront, and ever-present. Once he does that, he can start to rebuild himself and his fantasia again.

I've been waiting for the youtube cut since I couldn't match my european version with the US cut. I'm really torn about this movie because I think on its own it is a charming movie but unfortunately I read the book. It's originally a german book and the funny thing is in the english speaking world everyone knows the movie but hardly anyone knows there is a book, while in the german speaking world it's the opposite. They say the book is always better, which is not always true but in this case it really is. The book is so much better and unfortunately the filmmakers really didn't get it. They only adapted the first half but changed the ending so that none of the sequels could adapt the second half (which they didn't and also they aren't good in general). And the thing is that the second half is what it's really about, Atreyus story is only the setup for Bastians adventures in Fantasia, which go very differently than the ending of this movie and we never saw any of it on screen. The second half is also less "kiddish" than the movie, it is child appropriate but there is a lot of interesting subtext for adults. That's all I'll say because I don't want to spoil the book for anyone interested. I don't want to dump on the movie because it can be enjoyed on its own but if you are at all into books you should defintely read this one. Edit: Oh and the horse actually dying is an urban legend, it's not true
