Wow what a season finale this was! Glad to Ashley Johnson. The huge twist with Marlene telling Joel about what they found in Ellie. Joel going all Terminator to get her back and Joel..... really pushing some boundaries there at the end. Overall, what a fantastic season this was. Can't wait for season 2! Shout out to the cast and crew for the amazing work.
What was your reaction? What do you think was going through Ellie's mind at the end?

its been almost a year, but i gotta say this. Ellie would want to do what's right, but killing your only living sample is the dumbest decision ever and the wrongest. 20 years of no scientific advancement and this guy claim he can make a vaccine with no equipment or further test? BS

I agree that Joel isn't a villain but I don't agree with that it wasn't selfish. I think the reason Joel lied to her was because he knew that Elly was prepared to give her life for the cure. I believe that Elly thought it was her blood so I don't think she has considered if she wants to give her life for it. But I believe that if the fireflies had asked her she would have agreed. I have no children left but I can't imagine what I would do in this situation.

I 100% agree with Joel's decision. The fireflies didn't tell Ellie the surgery would kill her, they didn't give her the opportunity of consenting to it. That's more messed up to me than Joel rescuing her from certain non-consensual surgical death, especially considering the surgery isn't even a guarantee to succeed. Also I honestly believe Ellie thought it'd just be a blood test too, that's why they literally drugged her to speed the surgery along against her will.
I went from respecting Marlene to kind of hating her, purely for taking Ellie's decision away and then trying to claim the moral high ground. Joel was justified. To me, even if the surgery would succeed, taking a life in such an unethical way still isn't worth it. Especially a kids life. Plus, no soldiers or medical professionals there were innocent in my eyes - they were all participating in taking a childs life against their will. None were innocent. The worst thing Joel did was lie to Ellie, because I believe she knew he was lying, and that lie will only hurt her ability to trust people in the future. So the lie was selfish, but not his actions. He should've been honest :(

Great reactions to The Last of Us season finale! I can definitely agree with all the interpretations mentioned by all of Mason, D-Dave, and Oak. For me, I am unable to decide on one interpretation! 🔵 Feels weird to not have another TLOU episode coming this weekend. I saw someone suggest this video https://youtu.be/z8XN7eoZr0Y?t=165 ( The Last of Us "Alternate" Ending - I would like to second that suggestion. It's a 3 minute portion of a video ( watch the video starting at 2 minutes 45 seconds, the link above should take you to the right start time ) - it gave me a light-hearted wrap-up to season 1. 🟢 Thanks again for introducing me to The Last of Us! I would not have watched it otherwise - but since giving it a try ( I started with S1E3, then went back to S1E1, and then chronological ), TLOU has become a must watch show for me!

Interesting point, Marco. I feel like it's okay to like Joel's character while still recognizing that what he did was pretty messed up (I certainly do at least). Oh, I see what you're saying, and wondered if it was an intentional choice! Okay, that makes sense if so.

I definitely disagree with Oak here. I don't think the show was very good, and I don't think it's nitpicking to say that, but of course I know that that just sounds biased to other people. To those that have played the game, the show really rings of Druckman trying to patch up plot holes and smooth things over that he wished he could get rid of from the original game because it makes people actually like Joel, so by the time he makes the logical decision here we agree with him instead of hating him like Druckman does.
In Druckman's eyes, Joel is a villain for stopping the fireflies from murdering Ellie for a *chance* at making a vaccine or finding a cure. The fireflies never informed her of the need to end her life, they never informed her of the chance of success, the fact that they've failed at this before, etc. There's a difference between sacrificing yourself for a 100% chance versus a 2% chance to make a cure. And Joel never wanted to engage in violence, but the fireflies set the terms. They weren't going to let her walk out of there without a fight.
Ultimately, I think the show was done poorly and Druckman shouldn't have been involved because he worked too hard to try and make Joel unlikable and weak to justify his hatred of him, and his tampering with the story led to some pacing issues that really makes it unrealistic for Joel and Ellie to have gotten as close as they did.

Yes, that would be the right choice, but obviously the fireflies weren't going to give her that choice, anc they certainly weren't going to inform her that they tried this before and kept failing.

See I've always hated people talking about this like it's a moral dilemma. There's no dilemma here: the ends don't justify the means. What the fireflies tried to do is murder Ellie. It doesn't matter for what purpose, they were going to kill an innocent person. If they had informed Ellie of all the facts and drawbacks versus benefits of this decision and she chose to go through with it, it'd be a different story. But they're never going to give people that choice because they know that nobody's going to sacrifice themselves for a *chance* at making a vaccine, even though they've failed before.

That's definitely the vibe they're going with because of reasons I don't want to go into due to spoilers for the second game. It's clear that Druckman didn't like the fact that people actually like Joel's character and didn't agree with Druckman's opinion that Joel is an evil monster, so he tried harder to paint him that way in the show but it's disingenuous.

I seriously got the same vibe as Quin watching the end — about Joel desperately trying to replace his daughter, and Ellie possibly picking up on it and feeling uncomfortable — this is not a vibe I got in the game at all so I don't know if it's intentional, but I definitely got that vibe here.
Not complaining, I think this direction is interesting if intentional.
I also don't remember feeling so strongly that Joel might be a psychopath at the end of it XD
Again, not complaining, but very interesting direction!

"Pedro can only carry one streaming service at a time." - MQ, that had me bust out laughing 🤣 Thanks for the great reaction and discussion!
The ending where Ellie asks Joel to swear it happened as he said it did reminds me of when Maria told Ellie to be careful who she trusts since they were the only ones who could betray her. I think Ellie knows Joel's lying, but doesn't want to fully accept that betrayal so accepts his lies.
The creator/s of this game/show really did give what unconditional love a parent has for their child means. Give TLoU all the awards!!

Realistically the Fireflies couldn't have made a vaccine, the 1st two episodes opening hounded that the vaccine wasn't possible. Even in our world, there are no fungal vaccines even with all the equipment and people required. They don't even have a scientist, all they have is 1 doctor. And I think Joel is aware of this, especially given that the Fireflies have tried to make vaccines multiple times as Joel says in episode 2. In most cases, I'm all for killing the 1 to save the many but not here. It never would have worked. They'd have killed a child for nothing. Vaccines aren't easy to make even in the best of times. Covid for example, and even if they made a vaccine, who to say anyone but the fireflies would take it? I 100% agree with what Joel did, except for the lying to Ellie. I think the whole reason Marlene told them to take him to the highway and shoot him if he tried anything is that she realized he loved Ellie.

why would joel do that when he could have saved the world? and my answer to them is always this: he did, he did save the world. it's just that the world was that girl, and that's it.

They were both wrong, that's the beauty of it. Different shades of wrong for sure, Marlene prioritized the greater good and Joel just one person over the world. The ideal right thing to do, as if you were to follow a manual of ethicalness, would have been give her the choice, tell her and let her decide.

Oh and btw..... check out the after episode "Inside the Episode" from all the episodes, but especially this one to get word from the creators about what they had to say. It could impact your feelings about whose feeling/doing what and for what reason. They talk about some of that and it's an interesting addition to the episode. Imo Marlene making the decision to not give Ellie a choice (regardless of what she would've chosen to do) is what set all the events after to come about! Joel made the same mistake in lying to Ellie and not letting her have the same choice is wrong as well. But as y'all discussed, had Marlene taken the time to lay it all out and allow Ellie to decide, would almost certainly had ended this differently! Why did Marlene do what she did if she's so confident in Ellie agreeing? Let's assume she did and Ellie HAD decided to get through it..... then Ellie could've had time to make that decision with the only family she has, and could've gotten to Joel to let her go. Not to mention, tell the person she loves and cares for most their goodbyes. As far as I'm concerned, Marlene set the events in the hospital in motion with her choice. And Joel made it all worse with lies. CANNOT WAIT until season 2, as a huge fan of it personally. Fantastic watch, reaction, and discussion guys! 🤘🏻🔥

The only reason why I think Joel is not becoming the villain is bc he was never the hero, remember when he said he’s been taking down innocent people throughout those 20 years of apocalypse… so for me he’s can be a villain in the eyes of people like Maria or Marlene, a hero in the eyes of Ellie ( before ep 9 maybe ) bc she likes his protection and friendship and there’s people like Tommy who was like “I love as my brother but thinking about these past 20 years I don’t know if I trust you to come to my place”
