I mean yeah, sure. The Avatar State greatly heightens your bending abilities. But it doesn't make you invulnerable. Especially to getting stabbed in the back (or shot in the back in this case)

I know we love to discuss Zuko's destiny at the end of this episode, but can we talk about how much carnage Aang was about to unleash in the Avatar state LOL As for Zuko's decision, I'm sure several people have pointed this out. Zuko's decision was right for him in that moment. Uncle said, "Look inside for what you truly want." Zuko truly wanted his father's love and acceptance. If Zuko had sided with Aang right there, I feel like he still would have been conflicted/confused. Lol majority of the fandom is with you in that we love to hate Azula. One of the greatest and most annoying antagonists

That's wildly incorrect. You're just posting misinformation at this point. The Guru said he wouldn't be able to GO into the Avatar state, not that he wouldn't control it. He had control of the Avatar state, she just surprise attacked him. The Avatar state doesn't make you omniscient or aware of everything going on around you. He absolutely had complete control and spoilers: He has control the entire final battle, too. Everything he does in the final fight with Ozai he has complete control, as well.

I don’t know if you guys remember, but if the avatar is killed in the avatar state, the line is forever erased. Aang temporarily died, and then Katara literally saved the avatar line.

You can be married without being attached to that marriage. I went into a more in depth explanation elsewhere but removing all of your attachments is required for you to be able to exercise proper judgement. There's a reason why when you perform jury duty, they ask you if you have any preconceived notions about the subject at hand. You can't form a proper judgement if you have any attachments. An avat can be married and have friends and family and worldly possessions: they just shouldn't be attached to them. If they are, then they'll be biased towards results that would favor their loved ones. Imagine the conflict of interest if an avatar's spouse started becoming a dictator and the avatar was too attached to their spouse to not do their duty and stop them.

I feel like even talking about WHY this finale is so good is a spoiler so I won’t get into the details. It’s just fantastic. Subverting Expectations done correctly. I kinda like what Oak said about Zuko’s “transformation” being like drug withdrawals. The finale is like someone straight out of rehab getting offered that drug again. These few episodes together are just so good

Totally agree Amanda. For me the first two books of Korra are fine but Book 3 is some of my favorite Avatar content and 4 is really good as well. Maybe we can talk them into it after Last Airbender haha

The Guru is one of my favorite episodes. It's the first form of media that taught me about Chakras, and honestly they did incredible! I've been into them ever since. "Separation is an illusion" is a quote I refer to constantly. And Toph is a freakin metalbender now, absolutely insane. She said she's the greatest earthbender in the world and I believe it! Yay! we're at Season 3, I'm so excited! It's early a little, but I hope y'all watch Korra right after as well.

I think it is worth noting that we found out early in book 2 that if Aang is killed in the Avatar state, that the Avatar will not be reborn. So Azula nearly killing him, and I think she would have succeeded without Katara’s spirit oasis water, could have ended the Avatar permanently. The idea of Aang having to let go of earthly attachment to be able to enter the Avatar state is a. It sketchy to me. Previous Avatar’s had worldly attachments with others and could still control the Avatar state. The previous Avatar was married. It is interesting to me that this advice from a Guru was not from a former Avatar and I would want to know what the previous Avatar’s would tell him about that.

Regarding the final chakra, it actually makes perfect sense. In order to make the right choices, you have to remove yourself from the equation entirely. Remove any stake that you have in the results, remove any biases and preconceptions that can cloud your judgement. This is what the avatar is supposed to do. They're the bridge between the human and the spirit worlds, and the ultimate arbiter between the 4 nations. They cannot afford to let their own desires cloud their judgement. Think of how much worse it would have been if the fire nation started their war with the backing of an avatar that supported their cause because they were raised in the fire nation. The whole world would have fallen if that were the case. What happened to Aang is exactly *why* it's important to let go of your attachments. It was his duty to master the chakra so he could ensure he'd be strong enough to beat the fire nation, but instead of doing that he forsook his duty and chose to go to Katara instead. If he had let go of that attachment beforehand, then he would have been able to defeat Azula before Zuko even had a chance to change his mind. Nobody's saying you can't enjoy life or love or any of that. You just can't be held down by these things. You need to be prepared to lose them just as easily as you gain them. Otherwise, they'll always cloud your judgement and present weak points to be attacked.

It's always made sense to me as well, and I believe that's the case because of the mutual understanding of the Christian worldview. It's something that other people wouldn't get because they're still held down and mired by the world and so they don't see why forsaking the self is the correct pursuit.

As you guys said, you're hoping for an epic finish but instead, literally everything goes to hell. Uncle is captured, Zuko is back with the fire nation, Ba |Sing |Se is conquered by Azula, and to top it all off Aang is hit by a serious blow whilst in the avatar state (when he is at his most vulnerable moment) and team avatar literally have to flee the city. It's awful!2 YEARS we had to wait 😭 but trust me, it was worth it and I can't wait for you to experience Book 3 and the epic climax to my favourite series of all time 😁

Well, it was said before that while in the Avatar state, he is at his most vulnerable. And Azula got him in the back before he could do anything. She was just faster. While everyone else was in awe, she just acted. Toph learning to metal bend, something nobody's ever done before will always be one of my favorite moments. But I feel like it makes sense for her to be the first one (known), as her affinity and understanding of earth is more finessed than any Earthbender. I think the only one who is as strong is King Bumi. I can't wait for Book 3, some more great episodes on the horizon.

The letting go of Katara thing has always made sense to me. My interpretation is that when having to take a leadership position especially one in the nature of Aangs there is a level of detachment necessary. One parallel I make is like how Jesus was so connected to the people in a way unlike any but at times made statements like not trusting himself to them(the people) because he knew their ways. On one side he sacrificed his earthly desires for spiritual connection and purpose though it was for the people. The supposed paradox of letting go and embracing love is not a contradiction in my opinion, sometimes you have to let go for greater love. As Ecclesiastes says there is a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing. It's having to let go now to embrace later, and often for a greater embrace. Now this may not be theologically sound but some things that I thought about. But it's interesting.
