EARLY ACCESS: Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 FULL ACCESS
Added 2022-07-20 18:42:08 +0000 UTC
Here we are. The final installment of the Hunger Games. What a wild emotional roller coaster this was. And the series as whole. Woody was awesome and J-Law crushed it as well as everyone else. Just an awesome series this was.
How would you rank the 4 movies? What were your thought on this story?
And as always, we thank you all so much for the support here!
strongly agree. There is so much crucial context info cut out from the movies.

I recently found you guys because or your reaction to the Hunger Games. I hope you all have a chance to read the whole franchise including the Prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes which is Snow's origin story and you find out where the hanging tree song comes from. Also the books go I to so much more detail. Like the fact that Haymitch won the 50th hunger games which was a quarter quell with 48 participants. The books are more gut wrenching then the movies. I would suggest rewatching after reading.

if I remember well from the books, Peeta's family didn't move in with him in the village of the victors, that is why they all died, it's because they stayed in their old house. That's why in the second movie, he says that nobody needs him, 'cause his own family kinda "abandoned" him already.

Probably Mockingjay part 2. Prim dying was so sad. Cause this all started with katniss trying to save her life. I was also on team/katnissxGale.

I love that you guys loved this series so much :) and I agree, I feel like most people assume this is some cookie cutter battle royale teensy romance. Which makes it honestly one of the most misunderstood and underrated book/movie series ever. It tackles so many themes effortlessly and just as powerfully as any other story. I definitely recommend the books too, I've read and listened to the audiobooks, both are amazing (though, the 3rd book is... heavy).

Just finished watching the film alongside you. I never tire of this film series. They are incredible films and I still don’t think they get enough credit. Even now I think some assume they are some silly kids films. Every time I watch them I find them some powerful and I think I preferred the final book on screen than on the page. One thing I find moving is that the scene with Haymitch reading the letter from Plutark was changed to this after the very sad passing of Philip Seymour Hoffman, who was meant to do that as a scene with Jennifer, but it became a letter he sent her instead. It was the last thing filmed during principal photography, which I always find moving. I now need to finish the prequel book, which I’m finding just as impressive.

I was surprised by not talking about Rome as well, I mentioned it in the comment section on Catching Fire. It is very enlightening when you see it through that lens.

@Ukyo…give the prequel a shot on this one. The book was amazing and dare I say, even better or at least definitely on par with the series. It is still set AFTER the war, but when Snow was about University age. You will think differently about Snow for sure after it. It does not redeem him, or make him a good guy, but you will definitely understand his motives, where he came from and understand how the Hunger Games developed into what you see in this series. They were VERY different at the beginning. It is actually the first prequel I really got on board with, it absolutely broke my heart. You get so much more nuance and understanding, which is a rarity in prequel worlds. Usually it just feels like a money grab on the back of a popular series. This was very different. If they do as well movie wise as they did on the Hunger Game series, we are in for something really special!

Amazing, isn't it, that the books are actually darker than these films? It's been long enough that I've forgotten a lot, but I definitely still remember details about the mutts. Talk about nightmare fuel. And a lot of the worst stuff wielded by the Capitol was previously developed for the last war with the 13 districts- the war memorialized by the Hunger Games. It makes me pretty nervous about there being a prequel movie on the way. That war would be a natural time for it to be set, but wow, I'm not sure I want to see all that horror. This series of films was so well done, I kind of feel like adding anything to it will be detrimental. We'll see, I suppose. I have to say, I'm still a little surprised that you guys haven't talked much about all the obvious references to ancient Rome. The one that really struck me early on was the scene at a Capitol feast where Peeta and Katniss are offered a drink to make them vomit so they can continue eating. Ah, the good 'ol vomitorium. Well, now that you've seen the movies, you guys will be able to understand all the memes which show images of awful current events juxtaposed with pics of the rich and famous with their ridiculous clothes and hair and lifestyles, with the caption: "Meanwhile in the Capitol..."

I was reading them on vacation and my sister was as well. She was half a book ahead of me. We were sitting in the same room reading and out of nowhere she jumped up and ran out of the room and didn’t return. Then i got to prim’s death and I knew why she fled. She didn’t want to ruin it for me or give anything away. Then i was so hysterical, i had to stop reading and compose myself because my eyes were clouded by tears and were swollen. Then katniss with the cat back at home just about broke me. I’m not kidding. I haven’t been able to go back and reread this series even though i would love to.

So many people misinterpret these films as “tween” I’ve seen so many reactors say that as the reason they didn’t watch them until people voted for it but then they are blown away by the powerful, important story once they do see it. How one person can make a difference!
I love how Oak said that all 4 movies are 1 story because it’s so true. I can hardly pick a favourite book/film in the series for that exact reason. Each tells one part but makes more sense as a whole.
But what I love most about Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2 is that it really shows the consequences of war. The author didn’t shy away from that. Katniss isn’t an action heroine. She’s just a girl & even though she might live in the end… the cost for peace for her was so hard won. She lost so much. She was betrayed. Hurt & almost killed. She had to kill. The psychological & emotional damage done to her will never leave her. She’ll have to explain to their kids one day that District 12 is also a graveyard.
In the books… the last paragraph is one of the most beautifully written words I’ve ever read. It explains perfectly why Katniss ends up with Peeta. What he inspires & represents to her. I don’t think anyone could ever know what Katniss went through except for Peeta. Because he was on the journey with her! It bound them together.
I remember when I read the books…. I don’t think anything has ever shocked me as much as Prim’s death. I always assumed she was “safe” from the moment Katniss volunteered for her. And then for Gale’s be part of the trap plan… did not see that coming either.
I hope one day you read the books because they are phenomenal!
Thanks for reacting to THG!

The next movie is a prequel. It is the story of President Snow and his rise to power. The lady that hid them in her cellar, I don't think the movie said her name. It's Tigress. Remember her. I won't give it away but she plays a part in the next book so I imagine she will be in the movie.

Wow, what an amazing journey. It’s been years since I saw these movies and I barely remembered the story line of Mockingjay 1 and 2. I remember always having positive feelings about the series. But now that I have a little more life experience, the relationships are what hit me hardest. I just feel that the friendships and relationships we build are what give life the most meaning. I’ll be reading the books and listening to the audio books. Looking forward to the next series and everything else from you guys!

One of my favorite things about showing them with kids is how Katniss was completely against having kids in the beginning of the first book/movie. It shows how the world has truly changed. She swore to never bring children into the world they were living in. So for her to do so, shows how much their world has changed.

It shows them young with the kids in the but in the book it took 15 years after the end of the war for her to have them. She never planned to but she knew Peeta wanted them. Of course she wanted them after she had them.

I have not read the book, so I am asking here 🙂 Is Plutarch talking to Katniss in the end? I do not know why, but I thought that Katniss got the letter from him (in the movie) because Mr. Hoffman died before the movie was finished... But maybe it is like this in the book too?

That scene at the end where Katniss shouts at the cat is such a poignant scene. If you rewatched all the movies, the only real time where she ugly cried like that was when Rue died. The scene was showed without sounds which was heartbreaking. After that, she seems to put on a wall to her emotions. She is more controlled, more cold towards the death of people around her. I find that there is a sense of relief when Katniss finally lets her emotions pour out, grieving her sister. The way it was shot, the ugly crying, the anger and sadness, all of it is so relatable. Incredible scene.
As for Gale, if you noticed, he and Katniss started to have different mentalities during Mockingjay 1 & 2. And here, this is why she tells him goodbye at the end: ''Gale's 'win at all costs' mentality, which was evident before in his words, are actually being put into practice. However, Katniss is still clinging to the hope of winning the war with limited casualties and some sense of morality, as Peeta would have done. In the end, it is Gale's conviction in the necessity of sacrifice pitted against Katniss' moral incoherence that truly severs any relationship they had or could ever have. Primrose, Katniss' sister, is killed by a firebomb that may have been designed by Gale. Even though the order to use the bombs was given by President Coin, Katniss cannot bring herself to forgive Gale for his creation and his role in Prim's death, and effectively shuts him out of her life.''
I personally thought that the story played too much around the love triangle between Katniss, Peeta and Gale. I was never fond of all the kisses here and there. Some of them were a bit confusing, but I guess Katniss was confused about her own feelings too. I'm glad with who she ended up with in the end. They can heal from their trauma together, support each other and live happily with their little family.
These movies are great but whenever I watch them, I feel emotionally exhausted because of how heavy and intense the story is. I'm really happy you guys enjoyed them and it was great to see you all make assumptions along the way, which most of them were spot on! It's always nice to see reactors pay attention to the story and pick up on things that are more subtle. Great reaction! Can't wait to see you guys start a new series of movies! ^^

No matter how many times I watch these movies, the emotions are still there. I have no judgement if you don't always love a movie series after the first one, because there are times that happens to me too. I had a smile on my face watching your reaction for this, so thank you! p.s. The scene where Haymitch reads the letter for Katniss was originally supposed to be Plutarch talking to her, but unfortunately Philip Seymour Hoffman passed away before they could film the scene.

Okay so two things: the oak was right about the feeling that Katniss wanted to kill herself. She wanted to take out Coin and she knew that snow wouldn’t survive anyway and with her sister dead, it was too much and that is why she wanted to kill herself as well. Peeta saw it and stopped her. She is shouting „no“ because she wanted to end her „story“ as well. So her getting captured and the scene with haymitch was absolutely not what she wanted.
Second: yes they live together at the end but peetas house got destroyed. His house was opposite of Katniss house. You could see in the move that one side of the village was completely destroyed and his house was there. In the second movie peeta lived with his family in his big house and Katniss with her mom and sister in the other one.

I went on a journey with HG. I remember seeing the first 2 movies in theaters. After the cliff hanger of the second I went out and bought the hard copy of the third book. That weekend I went to a wedding in Vegas and remember reading it on the plane, then all day when we were at the pool party the day before the wedding. And then after the wedding party I went into my hotel and got to the part with Finnick and I remember crying in my hotel room in Vegas I was so upset. I finished reading on the plane back home. And then I had to wait a year for the movie. It wasn’t until after I finished all the movies that I went back and read the first two books. The second book and the second movie are hands down my favorite. I loved the second book because it goes into so much detail about all the previous hunger games of the tributes who are returning because of the quarter quell. I also don’t mind the fan made YouTube video on Haymitch’s hunger games. With the prequel book that came out in 2020… I think it was just because of dealing with the pandemic and loosing all my jobs when everything shut down I was not in the place to read it. Im currently about half way through the Songbirds and Snakes book. I personally am enjoying it. I’ve seen the mixed reviews on it. But I do want to finish it before the movie comes out.
I hope Appleton reads The Hunger Game series after he finishes Harry Potter. I read the paperback covers and I’ve listened to the audio books. They are amazing
