I think she buys the kerosene to burn down the house for the insurance money- she asks for bread in the general store and that gives her time to think of that idea

2022-09-04 15:54:55 +0000 UTCThese articles are interesting. I have a hard time w/ work/life balance conversations b/c so often they are centered around the idea that women want children. There are women that don't want children. Flexible policies and creating boundaries to protect our time should be for everyone - not just people w/ families. Even in places where that's the case, there is sometimes a mindset that people without kids should be the ones picking up extra work that comes up. I had no idea, as the NYT article points out, that the original Having it All book actually had nothing to do w/ fitting kiddos into the mix. In the Atlantic article, Slaughter talks about women who have made it to top positions who don't have kids - Sotomayor, Kagan, Condoleezza Rice. She describes Condoleezza Rice as the only natl security advisor since the '50s "not to have a family". Geez. I think there is an unfair judgement being made in the article that these women chose career over children, when the reality is some women just don't want kids. I also feel like Condi would do okay randomly inheriting her mom's cousin's baby? 😂
