2022-05-26 17:48:38 +0000 UTCRe: the Sanger discussion: On this episode Tracie made the connection of birth control lifting people out of poverty, which is a valid point IMO. But that point didn’t come across to me on the earlier episode. In that one, it sounded to me like she was flat agreeing with Sanger that population control of people in poverty makes sense on its face. It sounded to me that Sanger’s point was for poor people to stop breeding more poor people, as if she considered poverty an inherited personality trait rather than a social condition - which sounds straight eugenicist to me (and I’m still not convinced that isn’t how Sanger saw it). I feel a little better about Tracie’s interpretation after hearing this episode, but I was surprised you guys skated past the beginning of the Sanger quote about “negroes controlling their own birth rate.” The rest of the quote made sense to me, but talking about controlling a marginalized population’s “birth rate” still smacks of eugenics to me, so Sanger’s a no for me dog.
