I have no idea if this is actually true (I am not a doctor) but what I’ve been told is that they have done analysis and that from a patient care perspective it’s actually better to have fewer handoffs for patients - especially in emergency settings - even if that results in sleep deprivation for the doctors. So they’ve assessed the trade-offs and determined that there are better patient outcomes with one sleep-deprived doctor over an 18 hour period than multiple rested doctors in the same time frame. Maybe an actual doctor will weigh in here but if I’m the best you’ve got it always seemed compelling enough to me. Love the show!
