Starting to livestream

I've been afraid to livestream, so as a sort of exposure therapy I've started streaming on Twitch. This week I'm starting a regular schedule and you're welcome to join me. My Twitch channel is https://www.twitch.tv/premodernist_history

For those unfamiliar, in a livestream you can see and hear me but no one see or hear you or other viewers. You can interact with me and other viewers in real time via a text chat.

I'll be live twice each week -- once to play a video game and once to talk about history. For the history discussion, I'll start by reading through the Federalist Papers and talking about it.

Here's the basic schedule:

Tuesday mornings (North America time): Play various history-related video games. This week I'm playing "Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis" from 1992.

Friday evenings (North America time): Read and discuss a primary source. For the next few months I'll be reading the Federalist Papers live and giving a running commentary (mostly just summarizing what they wrote in modern English). I picked the Federalist Papers to go first because this is an election year in the U.S. so I thought there'd be increased interest in the U.S. Constitution. But I don't want there to be any discussion of modern politics in the chat. This livestream will be all about 18th-century politics.

I'll post the Federalist Papers videos on the YouTube channel as a playlist so people can access them in the future.

The schedule is subject to change. Having not done this before, I don't know what kind of stamina it will require. But I'll be doing little advance preparation and no post-production, so I don't think it'll be too much work. That said, the streams will only be about an hour or so in length.

I'm letting you folks know now while I'm still getting started. Once I've gotten settled in and used to it then I'll post about it on YouTube.

Civ 2 was the first video game I ever bought and I played a ton of it. Now, my favorite game in that genre is not from the Civ series - it’s “Old World”.

Yes.That is really interesting.I remember Madison and Hamilton make a comparison of the Amphictyonic council and American confederal congress. That part is really fascinating.

It'll be interesting to see their comparisons with European federations and republics.

Premodernist

I've heard good things about Pentiment.

Premodernist

I agree, I should. For a lot of people that's one of their main exposures to history. I played Civ 1 and 2 back in the '90s. It'd be interesting to see what it's like now.

Great!“ The Federalist Papers “ is such a great book.I personally think Madison view HRE as “German confederacy” is very interesting.

A historical game where you narrate would be fun but I can see how much work that would be.

Love this development. Lot of good history games out there too, I haven’t played Pentiment yet but that might be worth checking out. And here’s a less serious suggestion that I don’t actually recommend https://boingboing.net/2022/11/15/its-oregon-trail-but-you-have-dysentery-all-the-time-and-it-doesnt-kill-you.html

Try Civilizations VI. Also, you can post all your video streams on your YouTube channel

I haven't played video games in 20 years. Just now getting back into it, and I'm definitely bad at it. But I figure a lot of people form their impressions of history based partly on video games so I should try to be familiar with them.

Premodernist

Yes, the VODs will be up after the stream.

Premodernist

Mahmoud

I love Lucasarts and Sierra Games point and click adventures! Hopefully I'll be able to join the stream. If not, will VODs be available?
