Some BTS on The World Atlas Of Coffee shoot

Hi all!

We took another camera to the recent shoot we did for the new edition of the World Atlas of Coffee, and put together a fun little BTS video covering the day. The shoot was fun to do, and - as always - we learned a lot.

We commissioned video footage from different videographers in each of the countries covered, because I didn't want to use Unreal Engine-generated landscapes. This was a little bit restrictive, but constraints are no bad thing!

We had quite a lot of discussion about lighting on the day - do you light the scene to mimic the natural light at the location, or do you light the scene as you would if you were there filming with a crew? I'm not sure any of you would have been fooled, but we liked the idea of the reveal too much not to make this.

As you'll have noticed - there's a coffee plant or two in the video. And, as you might also have noticed, they're not real! Frankly, my mind was blown by the fact that you can get fake arabica trees!

In entertaining bonus news - we're keeping one and we're giving one away to you all on Patreon (there'll be a separate post with the giveaway because the BTS doesn't go to every tier).

I loved this "behind the scenes" video. I'm always amazed at how real they make it look. 🥰

Totally agree with this. He should definitely do a coffee/travel style TV show

Peter B Parker

I'm convinced you do these videos because you secretly wanted to be a television presenter. In fact, you should reach out to the BBC and convince them to produce a show or series on coffee with you presenting!

James, the colour of your hair matches that of your t-shirt, or the colour of your t-shirt matches that of your hair.👍 Outstanding!👏

What fun! It’s delightful to see you behind the scenes and with your crew. Many thanks, James!
