Azrael, Keeper of the Heart - Concept

People commonly assume that artists know what their work will look like before they start to draw. For the most part, this isn't how anyone works. The images that flash through our imagination rarely, if ever get translated down to paper like a projection machine. It's not that it doesn't happen like that, but it is very rare.

Every once in a while, I will have a concept in my head that motivates a drawing directly. Having dissuaded myself from believing that this is the way art works, I'm always surprised when it works.

I had this idea to draw Azrael hanging in the air like a huge black star and I just wanted to give it a shot.

Rather than paint it up like usual, I want to try to make a version of it that only uses linework and flat shading. Having a simplified version leaves me the option to more easily make it into a pattern for clothing or other screen printed items.

My plan right now is to make a painted version that is in the style of a classic Brom painting and also do a cell shaded version that I can use for merch and stuff. I haven't worked like that in a long time, so we'll find out how well that pans out together.
